It's like Cole set out to prove that he wasn't "Can't Get Enough" and "Work Out" and that he could spit like GKMC, but totally forgot about his catchiness. Cole "The Backpacker" is in full effect on this one. Way more Nas than Jay-Z/Drake on this one. The Beats do get kind of boring and don't listen to these pundits who are sucking up Cole right now.

Not to say that Cole isn't worth the gassing, but these pundits don't stand on their own. They just go with whoever has the juice and whoever the people running with, and the people are running with Cole right now. Make your own conclusion with the music. IMO the beats sounds very similar, and at times stale and boring, showcasing his rapping ability albeit on beats that sound the same. Miss America sounds like Villuminati which sounds like Land of the Snakes which sounds like Mo Money which sounds like Rich ****** which sounds like Trouble. Srs.

I wonder what is it about todays hip hop fan that makes everyone try to compare some new **** to everything else without the album even being officially out yet. I also wonder why does he have to be a "backpacker" if he is coming hard with flows and lyrics? I have only heard the album once and it sounds dark and thats what I think Cole was going for. A very dark cold sound. My only real gripe with the album on first listen is Cole seems to be 0 for 2 when it comes to closing the album out on a high note.


Its better that we didnt get forced wack singles like Work Out (like Nas as a Cole fan I too was very disappointed when I first heard it). I think he could have kept Kenny Lofton and Chris Tucker to add some balance for the record. But the end result its still a quality product.

Well the album for all intensive purposes is out, so comparing it is okay. Nothing is going to change from now until the 18th. And all I was saying was that many people's idea of a backpack rapper is that guy who spits cold bars over gritty hard beats, anti radio, etc. and I feel that that was Cole on this album, especially with the dark sound that you alluded to. It definitely was what Cole was going for and that's dope, nothing wrong with it. It's a "Rappers Rapper" album if you get what I'm saying. I also love the ending, Fauntleroy and Cole came correct, and the Choir put that record over the top for me.

But then again, Rich Ninjas, LAnd of the snakes, Mo Money, Villuminati, Forbitten Fruit, Aint that some ****, all of those records are rap records without any strong melodies to me, and I love melodies and Harmonies.

But I'm in the minority here, because after a few listens I prefer Sideline Story more than Born Sinner. Breakdown, Lost Ones, Lights Please, D&D3, Work Out (Which contrary to most I actually liked a lot) In The Morning, Nothing Last Forever, Rise and Shine, all records I prefer over most of Born Sinner. To each its own though.

I am right with you bro. I had this discussion with my brother.

I was introduced to Cole back in '09, I've been through all his mixtapes and what out. With this album I was expecting Friday Night Lights x5.... Anything that surpassed his achievements on mixtapes and would showcase his talents both on the lyrical and producer side. I just dont hear it with this album... Its like Cole is holding back. It may not be his fault. The industry has the finally decision on what makes the final cut.

Im very happy with the album.
I was extremely dissapointed in Sideline Story...as was Cole.
But this is a much better album.

I dont feel like its a 10/10... but off of just ONE LISTEN, SO FAR...id give it like an 8.5/10... which is a lot better than the 6.5 or 7 i originally rated Sideline Story.

When songs grow on me, and i listen more closely to the lyrics that 8.5 might go up or down, but right now Im very pleased with an 8.5 j.cole album... its better than most rap albums these days.

I cant wait to get the physical copy and pop it into the car and ride it out. :smokin

and dont forget guys, we still have TRULY YOURS 3 that we havent heard. Might be a few gems on there too. :smokin

Love Cole but was expecting more with his 2nd album its decent but not better than the 1st album IMO.

I respect your opinion but me personally. My feelings on an album are probably not the same 3 weeks from the day it leaks most times. I have to fully digest it. I agree he brought the bars and this album lacks those chick/mainstream aim tracks. But last time I checked GKMC only had two mainstream like tracks. This has 4 arguable in (She Knows, Aint That Some ****, Power Trip, and Crooked Smile)

***** Don't kill my vibe, Poetic Justice, Swimming Pools, Backseat Freestyle, that's four right there and even the ones that don't have "mainstream appeal" are being played by the masses and in general, have more of a bounce and melodic feel to them than cole's joints on Born Sinner.

I'lll see in 3 weeks or next month if I echo these same sentiments about Born Sinner.

This. My expectations were a bit unrealistic but I felt that if anyone could match a GKMC type album it would be Cole. Still a great album nonetheless, will be coping on the 18th
 
Just listened to BS. Album is ok. He sounds more confident which is good. He set the bar kinda high wit the Power Trip joint, and im prolly never gonna play this lp again. Nothing makes me wanna hit replay. 6.5-7/10 for me. Nothing bad, but nothing good either ( was feelin the joint wit Kendrick n let nas)... In terms of content to me he aint sayin much, but neither does any other rapper. What I listen for is HOW he says it, it terms of wit or supreme confidence (swag). And he gives you a some wit and attempts the swag, but it don't really translate to me. I think musically he hasn't really found a lane to master yet. But I think he got it in him, may need some time tho. Just my 2 cents

if some of these tracks were swapped for some of that Truly Yours 1 and 2 material then this would be perfect. Its a solid album for sure. Lets see what the Deluxe Version is saving up 
 
What flow is that at 1:04 on LAnd of the Snakes... it's driving me nuts, I know it's from something well-known... ???
 
I'm a fan of the kid but this album just isn't very good. Like, I have no desire to even spin it again. He should've listened to Jay-Z instead of Nas because his beat selection on here is bad and his flow is repetitive. Really disappointing. I expected much more from this project.
