[:: J. COLE THREAD | DREAMVILLE's ROTD3 ALBUM OUT NOW!! ::]

The more I listen to Cole (song is dope though. even though I doubt I'll listen more than a couple times), I realize something with rappers post-kanye...

...if you're from the suburbs you CANT talk about ANYTHING else besides GIRLS and MONEY.

Thats IT.

MAYBE Weed... Wiz, Currensy, Smoke DZA, etc...

It only reiterates EVERYTHING I've been saying. Drake and Cole are the SAME artist. Its the ONLY thing to connect with audiences. You're not about that life to rap about shooting, murder, and hard drugs so what else do you have experience with? Girls...and Money... Thats it. Its the DELIVERY is what people care about. The Warm Up and So Far Gone were about what? Girls...and Money... But because one fits more lyrics in per/bar and rides out with old school beats, hes automatically better? This is why I put them on the same level.

Props to Cole though, hes the only resemblance of an era where things SOUNDED like they used to. But even Cole fans know its not the same, or they should. Maybe its better for us as a people though...honestly, where has murder music led us or what does it have the potential to do these days? I think this is the period of HONEST music...where when you wake up and you hate your job (because you actually have one), you're tired of dealing with skeezers (since you've got ACTUAL women problems and you ARENT a pimp), and you're dreaming about money you wish you had (because you're THIS close to getting to your dreams). Its too normal for some people, but its what ACTUALLY happens. I think thats why people won't admit they're similar. They want to watch a movie, not witness in the same frame of life they're already in. Thus when they hear Cole, they're just willing to grab onto how it SOUNDS and proclaim it as that much better. Oh well...Thats just how I see it.

I'm anxious for this project to see how he'll twist this story up that we'll already know the answers to. And to be rapping like that at 15 is incredible. You see a clear Eminem influence there.

son you gotta chill with these emotion filled replies in every thread

Cole > Drake tho.
Drake's struggles dont compare to J.Cole's.

Drakes always had money .

Theres almost nothing similar about them , they sometimes have similar subjects , but Cole goes deeper .

Drake just says alot more things that are very relatable , i.e. parents divorcing , family members shunning him , etc.

If Drake was still as hungry , him and Cole would be equal .

Prime, if you cant differintiate (sp?) Cole's "struggle" from whatever it is Drake is puttin out, then i dont think you are listening to the Same J Cole i am.

Optimus - I actually somewhat agree to what you're saying and like Jthagreat said, if you can't recognize J.Cole's "struggle," then what are you listening to? I agree 100% with that statement.

Drake raps, or "talks" about the same stuff over and over again. He's getting quite boring. I think he's going to be played out sooner than later.

And ever since Drake compared himself to Jay-Z, I haven't been the same fan. Drake doesn't have a story to tell and is no where near as lyrical as a Jay-Z or J.Cole Therefore, Drake should stay in his lane, keep rapping about nothing, and milk the industry while he can before his time is up.

Honestly, dudes like Jay-Z and other "hood champions" and their stories will FAR outlast Drake and J. Cole's longevity. People always want to reveal in stories they actually can't comprehend. It adds to the mystique and ability to extract more of an experience. Its almost like a performance. This is why I'm wondering why people won't just come to terms with the fact that while we want to hear REALISM even if it comes from the suburbs, it'll NEVER outsell the hood and tales of growing up rough. It may not have the typical NYC sound but it will champion drugs, murder, and anything else that comes from a hardened upbringing... in the mean time...we'll just enjoy the music as it comes.

Wait...what!?
No disrespect, but you're trippin man.  All Cole's subject matter is much deeper than money and females.  Son dont really even talk about money like that, he more so talks about being broke.  Then you gotta include the songs about his "struggle", life in NC, being in college.  They are in no way similar (imo) and I'm not really understanding why people have this misconception they are.  I think some of ya'll are so trained to listen to the same "Drugs, Guns & Nice Cars" rap formula that you think anybody not spittin bout those 3 subjects all sound the same.  I dunno, but I def. dont hear the SAME subject matter between Drake and Cole.

And Cole ain't from the suburbs, he's from Fayetteville, NC.  My girl went there for high school, it's by no means a Chicago, Detroit, or D.C.., but it ain't a perfect little suburban town either.

My girl went to high school in Fayetteville also and I know it's not by any means the suburbs. Just look at their crime rates and they actually have gang violence there which is unusual, but they do. I mean I live in Cincinnati and we have a neighborhood that has been deemed the most dangerous in the nation, so you don't have to live in those cities to be from the
"hood" by any means. There are so many "hoods" out here that you don't even know about. They are killing everywhere my girl was just out there a few weeks ago and someone was killed at some event. People get killed in clubs out here in Cincinnati.

I agree 100%.  Cole's stuggle was trying to make it as at artists and having a "dollar and dream" and believing in his dreams. That's something I think anyone aspiring to do anything great can relate to. I respect both artists for what they are but Cole and Drake are not even close to being the same in subject matter.

And I disagree with you Prime I think there is more room in hip-hop to here about different struggles than the regurgitated "I used to sell drugs and now I got paid" rap. Not saying that I don't like to hear that struggle but it has been done before and good to hear the struggle of someone who is just trying to make it post-college etc.

"The Storm" reminds me of Nas' "Undying Love."

And anybody who compares Cole to Drake is nothing short of ******ed.
