[:: J. COLE THREAD | DREAMVILLE's ROTD3 ALBUM OUT NOW!! ::]

^That Cole and Kendricks album is going to be a problem. CDQ of Temptation has been needed for sometime....tracks sounds dope and they both ripped their verses.

i said "currently" brother.  alot of old rappers that some would consider legends are currently not on the level of new dudes out.
and nas has came back strong with life is good, that's why i said maybe 0]

Cole not breathing the same air as nas "brother"

^ I hope you are right but I was hoping for late this year as Kendrick will most likely drop his next solo album next year.

I think this will drop after Cole's album and before kendrick's next album, somewhere in between the two. Maybe after Cole's Born Sinner tour

He's not as popular as I thought.

Let's face it, Cole fumbled his debut. He had an opportunity to grow his fan base by being on the major stage, instead he switched it up and went after new fans or ears, with a sound that is much different than his mix tapes.

Now by doing that he lost a lot of his base that rode for him with the FNL series and gained the fickle hypebeast fans that are constantly looking for the "new" thing. These people don't even remember how big Coles debut was on the radio any more because they are caught up with the next new rapper.

Its sad I love this dude and he reminds of a lot of my friends and their lives.

I thought his album was pretty similar to his mixtapes. That's what I liked most about it, that he didn't steer too far from what he was successful with.

All his mixtapes don't have the same sound tho, each one has it's own structure and the album was a continuation of that and his career. If you're saying that "he lost a lot of his fan base that rode for him with the FNL series" then those same FNL fans you speak of are fickle themselves, plus Cole put out the AGS tracks and other songs that weren't on the album that had less of a commercial value. Let's be honest, how many artist drop a debut album that sounds exactly like their mixtapes in this era of hip-hop music? Cole had more success than the majority of people/music industry thought he would so I have to disagree with the fumbled debut comment. This is just my two cents.

^I agree with your post and I think "fumbled" is a poor word choice. I think his debut could have been stronger and maybe his sound wasn't was gritty overall as his mixtapes sounded but I still think it was a very good debut. I think what hurt the debut was that he was FORCED to make "'singles" instead of tracks that he really enjoys making (heartfelt songs) along with the fact Lights Please and In The Morning didn't belong on the album.

With that being said I think if Cole put out the debut album that he really wanted to put out I think it would have still been successful commercially and received critical acclaim like GKMC did. The difference is creative control which Kendrick clearly had way more of.

This.

you guys are correct, maybe i was to harsh with using the word fumbled. I really just had high expectations and felt a little let down, that is truly why I posted what I did. Wasnt based on stats or nothing lol. I just seriously had high expectations for dude...still do though and still think he has the ability to last and achieve great success.

Although I don't feel the same I know exactly what you're talking about as far as the expectations of his first album from a music and fan perspective. I liked most if not all of the songs on the album but I know that wasn't his best work, however, I also factored in the business side of things and realized he didn't have the freedom he wanted. When he tried to go the lyrical route with "Who Dat" it didn't work and that's when his album got pushed back and they started taking songs off of the album and saving them for the next; finally "Work Out" and "Can't Get Enough" came and so did the buzz and the album itself. IMO Cole looked out for his core fan base and the new mainstream fans on his album and I'm trusting that he's "playing the game so he can change it".

I am pretty much on the same wavelength as you with this and I think you are looking the situation fairly.. Some of my friends who are Cole fans have already given up on him because his debut did not live up to their expectations. I do agree that when you judge Cole's debut you have to factor in the business side of things.

I hope he has more creative control on Born Sinner but I am already concerned after he dropped this single with Miguel that label is still hoping for a major radio single. IMO if Cole is going to ever have a major radio hit then it is going to come organically and it can't be forced. Sadly his latest single appears to be the latter.
