I'm looking to get a mountain bike this week hopefully, definitely gonna be used & definitely gonna be on a budget. I just want the most solid, reliable, & best bang for the buck possible.

What brands & specifications should I look into?

I know there are some serious bike enthusiasts on here so any insight is appreciated

most mtn bikes have shocks i think and if your buying used go look at the bike if it has shocks and pull it down sometimes they are cosmetic shocks and it justlooks like a shock but really its just a rubber molding of a shock (wal-mart brand mtn bikes are usually cosmetic shocks)

If your gonna use the bike on the road or do some crazy trail you might want to look into getting a bike with front-end suspension.

I went on a downhill trail on my old %#+ Specialized Rock Hopper and didn't have front-end suspension. It was all bad

Lol I don't think I'm gonna be doing any kind of crazy trail riding maybe just some avid trails here and there and just to get started on a beginnertype bike

kind of like an all purpose type bike that will not break on me

That Trek for sale is a great price though it's not really a mtn. bike. More of a road/street bike that can be used on flatland dirt from time to time. Theframe & fork isn't built for the kind bruises usually associated with extended off road use. If you're gonna be on trails more often than not, definitely get something with a proper fork and fatter tubing on the frame. The price for that Trek is right though

how's this Trek?

trek 3900, I don't know what size it is though I'm looking for something with a 18" frame I guess

th0mas... I have a specialized hard rock. It's their entry-level mountain bike. It kind of sucks for real off-road stuff because it has no suspension, butit works well enough for nearly everything else. Keep in mind that you'll probably spend a lot on maintenance. I had to replace my wheels twice, thebrakes, the brake lines, the seat, etc.

How much did you pay for it Wally? I'm really just looking for a beginner bike that can do a little bit of everything. What do you use it for? all purpose?

did you get it brand new?

& If you want to throw down fisticuffs, fine. I've got Jack Johnson and Tom O'Leary waiting for ya, right here.

Same here im in the market for a moutain bike. I initially was gonna go with a hybrid but heard that its better to just go with a dedicated bike.

I'm don't know how tall you are...but that Trek is uber small maybe like a 15" don't buy it unless your really small.....

Look for something like this.....

Hardtail, Front suspension, Disc brakes..

As for brand i would go for a Kona , they have a nice line up of entry level machines

If you can try and find a 29'er....

I agree that you should look at the major brands: Specialized, Gary Fisher, Trek, Cannondale, Giant

If you are going to do some cross country and mild down hill get a hard tail. At least look for: quality components (gearset, shifters, deraillers), discbrakes, good front fork

I have an 08 Gary Fisher Marlin Disc with Shimano Deore components, Avid disc brakes and a Rock Shox Dart 2 front fork.

I use it on road and cross country/mild downhills here in San Diego. I average 60-70 miles a week on road and 5-10 miles off road.

You're right I just noticed how small that bike is lol

I am looking at this Trek 930 Singletrack also

I'm still awaiting his reply to my offer. I think I need something in the 18" to 20" range frame-wise

Anything specifically I should be looking at in terms of used bikes? or just go by your gut feeling when I inspect it?

thanks everyone

edit: he said for that 930 the lowest he will go is 100.00. Is that a good deal? fair deal? steal?

^^^ from my experience...Gotta go and ride it, ride it off the curb. on dirt if possible. just ride it around if he/she lets you. That should tell you if youshould get it.

One-thousand one, one-thousand two... Oh, I don't know if you heard me counting. I did over a thousand. You have your ubulus muscle thatconnects to the upper dorsimus. It's boring... but it's part of my life.

I paid something like $35 for the bike. I got it used from a friend. It retails for around $300. It's a small frame though, so I have to put the seatreally high. Just general advice for anyone on a bike... make sure you're sitting high enough. It's tough to bike when your knees are really high andyou can't extend your leg fully as you pedal.

I don't use it off-road much. Mostly I use it for biking to campus and also just short road trips for exercise. It can handle decent bumps. I tried it oncethough on a real mountain-biking course though and by the end of it the bike was ready to fall apart. So yeah, my bike is decent for all-around stuff. Since Idon't really take it off-road much, I put slicks (tires without much tread) so that biking on the road is easier. If you plan on doing mostly road stuff,do that.... But if you want to do some off-road biking, get a bike with at least a front suspension. But then it'll be harder to bike on the road.

As for brand, I would avoid the wal-mart stuff. The best option is to get something that's lightly used. Specialized, cannondale, trek, etc. are all prettygood. Don't forget to get a helmet and pump. I think I spent more on those than on the bike itself, plus a few hundred on parts over the past few years.

Would you say that Trek 930 I posted is a good deal for 100.00?

I want to know before i pull the triggar!

Change of plans! I ended up spending a little bit more but got a much better bike thanks to my cousin who is an enthusiast

got a Trek 4300 which retails for about 600+ for a very good price, I'll post pics a little later but it's pretty much exactly this:

I'm hyped

Lakers gold too

Post your bikes!

I ended up getting it for around 2,
the dude that was selling it was asking 350 but was moving/leaving the state so we called him & said we will offer this and take it off your hands today sohe said Okay

the 930 I checked out was nice but it was just a little old and the gear shifting wasn't as smooth as the 4300

Now I just gotta get a helmet & lock

Nice pick-up.

The 930 looked o.k. but I think it's from the 90's so it's old. The 4300 looks nicer.

Nice pickup, but to be honest with you, there are better quality bikes out there than Trek. If you you aren't doing anything big with it though...it'sfine...but if you're gonna be hitting up local MTN bike spots, with lifts and everything...I don 't think it's gonna hold up.

this bike should be perfect for what I plan on doing. I'd say once/if I'm really into it hardcore status I'll probably get a more beefed up(moreexpensive) bike, I know they can get REAL expensive lol

for the money I paid + the quality of bike I feel I did pretty good. like I said I'm still a noob in the bike game

thanks Wally

& yeah the 930 was from 2000 I believe. it was real clean though. but the 4300 is still in production & the resale is strong

I'm stoked w/the bike & think it looks dope haha. I got my helmet I'm about to go ride around for a bit right now lol
