official BMX thread

BMX frames will never really get below about 3lbs because below that you compromise enormously on strength and even more on stiffness - like riding a damp noodle.

Both of those factors are way more important than weight in a BMX race. A decent BMX bike will weigh around 22lbs and you would spend $000s to get it below 20.

There are a couple of carbon frames around - but the advantages aren't really there for BMX like they are for road bikes or to a less extent MTB. Same with aluminium. Steel is still the best material.

Thanks. What are some brands your recommend?
If you want a bmx bike, then I recommend a Stolen. I had one in junior and High school that I used to get around town before driving. It was all stock, but decent for $300. My local bmx shop owner rides for them too.

Either of those are :smokin I remember having a GT Interceptor, I used to own the block with my GT while all my friends had Diamondbacks and Dynos.

my '88 GT Vertigo

put blue Animal grips, blue Kenda tires, gold chain, & Shadow pegs on it; all other parts are OG

Nice.

Is that your workshop or a bike shop? Pretty nice setup if it's yours.

^ Lol I wish. It's my homie's bike shop, Area 51. I order all my parts & stuff from him; great prices...we're talking about building a lowrider bike together this Fall :smokin

I wondered. There are some pricey tools hanging there.

I kind of miss that day-glo period too. I liked it when bikes were like that. Maybe it's just nostalgia but it was a good era.

For those of you who have done a rebuild; is there a way to find all of the original parts for a certain year if you want it to be accurate? I'm looking to build a 1986 GT Pro performer unless I can find one that's in complete tact for a reasonable price.

Needed a new hobby/project for the Summer:

1983 Diamondback Silver Streak, about 80% done. Want to get some NOS Dia-Compe brakes, new chain, new chainwheel, and some other minor things.

^ damn thats a clean looking bike.

i havent ridden a BMX bike in damn near 20 yrs now, but I was looking at picking one up just for nostalgia sake. Do they still make them in the bright *** colorways or do I have to get lucky and find an original from the 80's?

Check bmxmuseum.com as well as their for sale section. Of course there is eBay, and your local Craigslist.

Same here man. Its been a while, and the new project has turned into a full on addiction. A lot of companies are retro-ing their old school styles but I find searching Craigslist for OG's cheaper and more fun for re-building's sake.

Thinking of getting a 24" cruiser next. Definitely want to keep it old school, 80's to very early 90's at the latest.

Anyone have any suggestions?
