Is Getting A Shapeup an "Unproffesional" Look?

Obama gets a shapeup, he just doesn't get a Dominican shapeup where it's super razor sharp and the hairline is pushed back half an inch. I thinkit's professional and a clean look, as long as you're not getting lines and whatnot cut into it.

And for the record...I think these things are foundational. Look at the examples given. Tiger? He's probably never had a shape up. He didn't come up inan environment where shape ups were "essential" to compliment a hair cut. I know people like that NOW. That extra crispness isn't important tothem. They cut their hair in length and go on about their business. They don't have the mindset that "now I need this shape up to complete thislook". Jesse Jackson? I've seen Jesse with a line before...but you have to understand with his age/hair type he's probably not going to bestressing a shape up all the time as someone like myself would. There's a reason why shape ups have their own price on barber's menus. They'reoptional.

Semantics, but a Brooklyn fade is still a shape up. You still only pay the shape up price if u get it. It's just like the above except they cut of yoursideburns entirely. I'm not talking about like a Boosie fade where you're faded all around your head, this is just at the temple.

But his isn't fresh as his burns are already 5 oclock shadowing. Here's a really bad one, it's also called a temple fade. I need to find thatthread DatZNasty made, he had a pic of a good one

And even on so called "normal" shape ups, it's not uncommon for barbers to alter your natural lines to create better angles or arches.

My point is...they're not regular shape ups which is what the OP is talking about. If you go in any barber shop and just ask for a shape up...they'regoing to sharpen your line...all that extra *%*+ is someone goes into the shop and specifically ask for.

qfe. age plays a lot in this.
you rarely see older dudes in the hood with a "shapeup". they keep it clean though. it just dont be razor sharp.

My kind of topic.

I think they wear a natural hairline because it's easier to maintain. I cut my own hair every few days to keep a 2 but I don't have a razor sharp line.

You can add the Gumbels, Jason Capehart, Denzel Washington and Cornel West to your list too. But I think it has as much to do with professional/nonprofessional environment as it does with the kind of Black man you're dealing with.

Michael Eric Dyson
Don Lemon
Idris Elba
Roland Martin
most NBA athletes

Those dudes wear sharp lines. It's not black and white on who wears a sharp line but it seems like certain types do and don't.

The best way to describe this is using eyebrows as an example. There are three types of men's eyebrows- 1) natural 2) cleaned up 3) razor-cleaned like awoman or dominican rico suave type lol.

With those three in mind, Obama gets the 2nd treatment in terms of hair lines. It's clean yet not so done to the point that you can spot it a mile away. The shape-up OP is referring to is like that of number 3 with perfect lines. Its just more acceptable for guys to have perfect lines on hair in the hood thanit is for them to have their eyebrows done.

If my boss (District Attorney) came to work with a perfect shape up I would look at him like I would my friend coming home with his eyebrows done.

QFT....

Dudes be comin out w. sideburns sharper than ginsu knife...

Not a primarily "urban" shop, you have to ask them NOT to give you a shape up and sharp lines or they will by default. Now Supercuts, yea you gottatell them you want a llineup and pray for the best though.

While on the subject of race and haircuts

DO most black/white barbers know how to cut the other race's hair? Are they taught that?

I've seen white and Asian dudes get cuts in my shop but its not the Ryan Seacrest types; they basically get the same cuts as us without a shape up. Neverbeen in a white barber shop so I don't know about them cutting black hair. I don't trust them with my hair.

I can only comment on what I see and seems as if Black barbers do and either White barbers don't...or black people just aren't comfortablewith getting their hair cut by a white person. When I lived in NOVA...I used to walk by and glance in white barbershops and I never saw a single black personin there. But I can go to Largo...and see more than a few white dudes walk in on a busy day.

The white barber in my barbershop can cut, I just don't go to him. Other than that, I never been to a white barbershop, and 2 of the barbers can cut whitepeople's hair if they get a Caesar.

I don't think a clean "urban" shape up is unprofessional, but it's more of a urban youth thing.....I guess. I get "urban" shapeups, and I'm somewhat young.

I don't know why it's associated to something as being urban and for youth.

When I'm 40 I'm not going to be going around rocking a widow's peak

But will you have extra clean, razor sharp lines? I agree tho, I won't have the peak either, but by the time I hit 40, I most likelywon't get my line up as sharp.

Maybe it's because I grew up with a master barber as a parent or something...but I don't know any other way to get a shape up. When I sit in the chairand ask for a shape up...I expect it to look sharp.

Like for example...Diddy keeps his %$%! lined up and he's about to turn 40. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Facial hair I can understand, but really I don't get how this may look unprofessional to people. I think it makes you look clean and it looks better thannot getting a tape. I'm hispanic if that matters.

i know what you mean........

i think as a whole...bald head leans into unprofessional....but when u are bald....i think its better to shape it up......even though it kinda does give anurban image.....

i wish i could grow hair.....but got thick asian hair that grows outwards

No effin' way....you think it looks better to have a Manu baloney patch, or just keep it clean shaved? There is NOTHING unprofessional about having a baldhead....
