I was chillin at this lil one in Beijing... I didn't stay there I was actually at this BALLIN @@@ 5 star joint in front of it but that was the chill spotto talk to other foreigners, learn the "tips and tricks", and get lifted!.... people in em are usually cool / hippie people..... Next time I go outof country I am thinkin about actually stayin at one, go for it

stayed in one in San Francisco...nice place, lightweight dirty, cheap rooms.

hostels are good places to stay at when you travel to foreign countries for extended periods

You hit the nail on the head. Youth Hostels were created so that young people could afford to travel on a budget and while they are in many places they aremost associated with Europe.

I have been to Europe a few times and all but one time it was with family and we just stayed at Hotels or Pansions (the awidely used Term in France and German for abed and breakfasts, which I highly recommend). On one trip, however, I travelled around Germany with my high schoolclassmates and stayed in few Youth Hostels. The biggest downside is lack of privacy, there are usually four to ten people per room almost always the bathroomis shared among half of the floor or all of the floor. You have to put on your own bedding and return it when you leave and you usually have to use the stairsand some Youth Hostels can have multiple floor and that was annoying.

It was easier for me because our groups was no big that we never had to hare a room with strangers. I loved getting to meet people from all over the World butsharing a room with strangers can really put you at risk for theft (they almost always will have large personal lockers so if you careful and lock your thingsup you should be fine but people get careless and drunk and get robbed).

Some of them serve dinners (almost all serve breakfasts), the food is usually terrible when they make dinner and you are better off skipping it and gettingstreet food if you don't have much cash. The breakfasts were always good and in Germany they were quite good and the reason is because they are bread, cheese, coffee, hot chocolate, jams, Nutella and maybe some soft boiled eggs.

The accommodations are spartan to say the least but it is good when you are young and do not or cannot spend the money to get hotels (which can be fortune inbig Western European Cities). For me it was perfect preparation for living in a dorm, the lack of privacy, the communal bathrooms and the dining hall (althoughin the US college have bad food at every meal in the dining hall because they attempt to cook a breakfast as well as lunch and dinners, as opposed to providinga true Continental European Breakfast based on fresh bread and coffee). Like a dorm there are upside with the downsides, you can have fun pulling pranks, horsing around, having interesting discussions with your fiends and others on your same floor and like at college the ghettoness of it all is easy to ignorebecause you will probably be drunk although unlike most freshman dorms, many large youth hostels have a store on the ground floor and they sell, among otherthings, beer. One night, I had plenty to drink at the club and after out late night bar crawl but I decided to improve my buzz and I did not even have to puton shoes and run to any corners stores.

In short, it is like college dorm but with even less privacy but with beer for sale to people as young as 14 or 16 and usually they provide pretty decentbreakfast.

^^ Rex, you just reminded me how good the paella and sangria were at the hostel my friends and I stayed in in granada. Ah yes and nutella, crackers &strong European coffee. Mmm good memories

I doubt I'm gonna stay in one because I found a hotel that's actually cheaper than it. This is in Seattle my boy was like look up Green TortoiseHostel. I'd rather stay at a janky motel then some bunk beds.

It's a shame that a movie is scaring so many people away from one of the best ways to travel and meet people. Not to mention inexpensive.

In Spain,we were at this train station that only works till 12(or 11) name is Atocha...we finished watching a Real Madrid game at 11:35 so we missed our trainto take us to a hotel we had arranged for(1st day in Spain we came from Italy on Plane) so me,my big bro and his friend decided F it let's sleep in thetrain station. To our surprise Atocha closes before 12,meaning the last train leaves at 12,doors close at 11pm.

So we slept outside the station for 2hours till bugs and crap were crawling around cement floor(i know disgusting) where we were.So we walked around Spain for1-2hour now this is 3am-4am,we slept at a park for a second but luckily we found a guard and asked him for directions to a Hostel.

It was 37E each, and the bed was not bad small, though. And room was small also, but had a bathroom which was very small, but had a big as tv lol.

Nutella is like bit of Continental Europe in a jar. I love the way hey have breakfasts in Spain, France, German, Italy ect. they always have the strong coffeeand I am amazed how there are so many variations on bread that little region in Europe has it own distinct style of bread and they are always great although Ibelieve that croissants are overrates, at least when compared to German Brotchen, which is even softer on the inside and super crispy on the outside. It isalso nice to have cheese with breakfast as well as eating your eggs from the shell with a spoon.

I really need to get back to Europe, I haven't been there since 2002.

BTW, Sangria is very overlooked drink outside of Iberia, it is so good to have from small cylindrical glasses and it goes well with savory lunches and dinnersas well as with fruit and cheese plates and pastries.

A very old bump

Anyone with negative experience?

The pic i posted is like 8 beds in one room

I can already think of one problem:
People are going to come back at night at different times. Won't that disturb people that are already sleeping. Someone can just walk in and flick the lights on

Many of these are unisex and it's one bathroom shared for all in that room.
More likely it takes females longer in there, some guys too.

That was what turned me off to them. In New York City, you can even stay at hostels integrated into the YMCA. I'm not bout that sharing a bathroom with strangers life, but moreso they were like 8 bed to 1 bathroom, 16 beds to 1 bathroom, etc. Some were coed, some weren't, but there is maybe a locker at most to secure your belongings and it's not like you're with your boys, you are with strangers. I can see the social value of meeting other travelers, etc. but again, in the US I wouldn't do it. If I was backpacking across Europe, maybe.
