Jordan Brand Structure and MJ

I've got a general question about Jordan Brand and MJ's involvement....Since the 2009 kinda bombed..it got me wondering does MJ have the power toshut down the production of a sneaker?? By that I mean do Jordans actually get submitted to MJ for his approval before they are put into production?? Once Istarted thinking about that it kinda popped another question in my mind....what IS MJ's actual title or postion at Jordan Brand? I mean does he have anykind of creative control, veto power, or is similar to like George Forman and his grills? The grills bear his name but its mostly endorsement of theproduct....he gets paid a pretty hefty endorsement fee but he has no imput or control over the company that creates, markets, sells them......

EVERY jordan shoe goes trough Mike and meet his approval. a good example is the jordan X when it was originally released he actually pulled what was left andredid it with minor changes.

he probably has some control but i imagine it is not as high on his priority list as it once was since hes not the one wearing them everyday on the courtanymore... not to mention he has to deal with the bobcats.......plus Jordan is probably a little out of touch with whats in and whats not anymore so heprobably gives the okay on a lot of things he might not if he was 20 years younger

^^ yeah i agree. I've been under in impression for years that ever since he retired, he could care less about what comes out. There is plenty of footageout there of MJ participating in the final product when he played, I haven't seen any recent pics or anything about his leadership in the brand. I guess hehas other stuff to think about.....?

as long as its making money and people keep buyin them...why not?

its all about the money peeps

true that, i have a feeling he doesnt have any involvment any more, in regards to that he probably just trusts JB to make the decisions.

why does he care what the shoes look like if his wallet looks like ---> $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Thanks for the info!!...if this is the case why is that no one ever calls at Mike for putting out subpar products?? (i.e. cheap materials, baddesigns, etc)...Althought Jordan Brand is a sub division of Nike, the company does bear his name.....it just doesn't make sense to me that Mike is nevercredited with putting out great products or barked on for putting out bad...

So since everyone pretty much thinks he has nothing to do with the company (I kinda think the same thing) What do you think is caused the decline of JordanBrand its image and it s products?

If MJ himself would have design power, he'd probably design some type of boat/golf shoe with a cigar holder. He's just the face behind the (dying)brand.

JB products still sell well, it just certain areas do better than others.

but i will say hype and a over saturated market of JB products cause the retailers to discount half of their stock heavily

At more than $1 billion in sales, the Jordan brand now makes up roughly 5 percent of Nike's overallrevenues.

JB is definitely a dying brand ...

MJ only seems concerned with the flagship models such as the XX3 and this year's 2009 model..

...and as far as retros go MJ seems to feel the older models will sell their self. There's no marketing for retro's even though they're supremelypopular so they know cost cutting methods even though they reduce quality will always rake in the almight $. It's the reason people still complain abouttheir Fire Red 3 retro's paint chipping over a little more than 2 years....among other shoes they like to sabotage.

In this era of the company, retros will sell themselves, and MJ seems to be only involved when the company is debuting a new flagship model. I don't agreewith any of it, but it is what it is.

i think its more about not vetoing rather than approving. His title is just a title, I am sure he picks and chooses how much involvement he has. He COULD vetothings, or alter a design like he did with the earlier models, but I get the impression that it doesnt matter to him anymore, he just goes along with whatever, they hire people to make designs, buy materials, choose colorways, marketing, etc.

Do you really think the average Vice President of Operations of other companies really get deeply involved with design and materials (leather/paint quality)decisions? Do you think he goes to China and glues the soles on too? Let's have a grip on reality here.

I guarentee the only thing he has to do with the shoes is cashin the checks and takin pics with flagship models.

WRONG.
Every Signature Jordan, but not every jumpman shoe.

Back in 1994, when the X's first came out, Nike released them without getting full approval from MJ. The first colorway (white/black/steel) were releasedwith an added toe cap.

MJ disapproved of the shoe and had Nike cease production. Every color after that had the toe cap missing. Sales picked up a ton. MJ would like to thinkit's because of his decision to have the toe cap removed.

I think it's because he came back to play.
