Sup, im a young dude (21) who lives in his own one bedroom apartment. I'm in a relationship but shorty doesn't live with me. My question is for theyoung Nt'ers who've been like myself living on their own for about a year or so, how is your grocery shopping experience? Specifically about how muchdo you spend? What does your rotation usually consist of and how do you keep yourself entertained food wise? I try to switch it up but im limited, I couldprepare one or two dope meals but...

I go shopping between once and twice a month, with maybe a pit stop in between for a necessity (i.e. milk, etc).
I'm 24, live on my own and my gf doesn't live with me.

I luckily have an employer who keeps a kitchen stocked. Therefore, breakfast 5/7 days of the week is covered. I could eat lunch here too if I needed too aswell.

Therefore I buy lunch meat, bread, etc for lunches and actively mix in left overs from dinner.
A lot of people cannot tolerate frozen meals like Smart Ones, Lean Cuisine, etc. But seriously, for $2, I'll eat them. Sure sodium is a bit high, butI'm active so its kind of a wash.

Dinner, I don't have a gas grill so I make do with a oven/stove. I mix stir frys, pastas, and turkey burgers.
I know how to make a mean pizza too.

My avg cost to shop per month is about $100.

Coupons are no joke either. Seriously.
Oh and you can save a lot by picking up snack foods from Target and the alike.

when you learn how to cook more meals and you'll find your grocery bills will decrease, since you'll be spending less on prepared foods.

btw... lasagna can be prepared and frozen in the freezer.
also, if you buy chicken, meats, look in the circulars for bulk deals and then when you get home. seperate the package and freeze the meats seperately.

Here's a quick and really easy meal that tastes pretty good. I made it in college all the time

take chicken legs and/or thighs (4-5) and brown them in a medium saucepan
take a can of campbells cream of mushroom soup and add half a can of milk and half a can of water.
stir well so there are no lumps
bring to a boil them simmer for 20-30 min, stirring constantly
add salt and pepper to season

Try and minimize the amount of times you have to go to the store, also focus on food products that are flexible (i.e. ground beef can be used for tacos, spaghetti bolognese, sloppy joes, etc)
Frozen Lasagnas are money
Frozen chicken breasts are also good, you can grill them if you have a bbq, or just fry it in a pan with some butter...After the chicken is done, take it out,put some mushrooms, more butter and some cream in the pan and heat that...Bang out a quick salad and some rice, you've got a solid meal

I've been living alone for 18 months now (I'm 20) and cook fairly often, the more you cook the better you'll get and you'll realize that aslong as you aren't an idiot you can experiment and $@@+ around in the kitchen

You can also buy pre-sliced philly cheese steak meat that's frozen, throw that on the frying pan and then on a toasted bun with some whiz and that'seasy

Also just go on food.com and find a couple recipes that look good

Finally, if you aren't watching your weight too much, an easy (and BOMB) meal is walkaround tacos...Buy the little bags of nacho cheese doritos, cook someground beef, then open the chips and put the ground beef in and just eat it right out of the packaging

I usually drop around 40-60 every 2 to 3 week. I don't mind eating the same thing though.

I go to Costco and buy cereal (Special K), Wheat Bread, Soda (Diet Coke), Chicken Breast (Kirkland/Tyson), Water (Kirkland), Veggies, Strawberry Jam, Turkey.

It works for me.

I probably spend about 50-70 about every week and half or so at the grocery store.

Usually my list consists of eggs, milk, wheat bread, vitamin water (my nearest cheap grocery store usually has them 10 for $10) cereal (I like honey nutcheerios), some kind of pasta (like just actual dry pasta, or mac & cheese or sometimes this frozen pasta meals that are way good), peanut butter, somekind of jelly or jam, rice, usually some kind of fish (I like salmon and tuna alot), bananas (sometimes other fruits that are more season like blueberries,etc..), and then various condiments and sauces to go along with the various other items. And some items like milk I buy about once and week and others lastalittle longer like big boxes of cereal or just condiments that last awhile...

Best part about the grocery store for me is it's literally two blocks away...

And occasionally I'll get something random that looks/sounds good that could be anything from a steak to pudding that isn't really killing the budgeton a weekly basis...

Man, I had my own dorm room, and there was a grocery store right outside. I swear I had no clue what I was doing, i'd always get like a half gallon ofmilk, some bologna and cheese, a loaf of bread, and some rits bits peanut butter crackers. I thought I was the man too walking back with grocery bags in hand

Yea coupons are your friend. Yea it may take a while to sort through them, but you could save $10; and over on a bunch of grocery trips that adds up.

Good looking out Dirty, I'll give that one a go.

Yea 40-50 dollars is what I usually drop on the essentials including the ground beef and pastas.

George Foreman grill is the greatest invention ever.
And i clip coupons like a 40 yr old home maker. pretty funny to see the look on the cashiers face when i bust out 20 coupons.
$100 a month, staples are hamburger patties for the GF, a few frozen pizza's when im lazy, and chicken for the GF grill. I usually ball out on fruits andveggies cause they are easy to snack on.
Those lipton noodles and rices go with anything and for $1 a bag cant be beat.
for breakfast i usually get those microwaveable pancakes and waffles. $2 a box for about 12-16.
comparison shop, go to the stores with the best sales that week. and get those member cards, i always give it to them after they scan my stuff cause i like tosee all my prices get reduced (makes me feel special...)
Buy in bulk and freeze it. chicken only lasts 4-7 in the fridge but is good for 6 mos in the freezer.
