I rather do a job I enjoy and use my mind, than to have a physically demanding job for the rest of my life

longshoremen/stevedores here in hawaii make well over 100k/year. i been told that the biggest challenge on the job is finding a place to hide from the foreman.

thats a pretty ignorant thing to say, if u dont think firefighters 'use their mind' than i dont know what to tell you.

but i wouldnt expect much from someone with 'hyphy' in their name.

How is this surprising?

I always see firefighters with nice cars and homes around my way.

They pull in some good dough, my uncle is an emergency paramedic.. He said some of the veterans are pulling in 200k+ a year. Veteran being 10+ years deep

that def depends on where your located

not every vet is going to be making 200k a year with just 10 years of service...hell not even close in his lifetime
around MY WAY that is..

hmmm...
Plumbing is recession proof, believe me. My boy is a plumber, and so is his dad. They work non-stop, forget about owning your own plumbing company and vans, you'll be pulling in 300k at least.
some say its recession proof but its actually not. they have an advantage because when they had to become certified they had to learn many othertasks so they can help out in other areas like steamfitting etc. so if the plumbing side slows they can just switch over to another job site and help out.

But when i left to go to school the 1st of sept. all of the plumbers were getting laid off...

Truck Drivers definitely make guap. Not really the ones who work for a company but ones who are self employed (single-ownership) meaning that they own theirown truck and make their own routes. (not easy work) my father owned and ran his own trucking company for i think 15-18 years. For the people working for acompany .. the dudes who are single (not married) and kid free and live by themselves and are truck drivers definitely live comfortably though. the ones whosupport families not so much. the avg truck driver working for a company could make anywhere between 60-80K (good year) .. the ones self employed (one man, onetruck, own routes) could see 90-100+K

Def. great jobs. The family business has been firemen/plumber for last 50 years. I am the one breaking the mold though because I went and am still in school.Ya gotta remember, just because its good money it doesnt mean its good work. First off, you destroy your body as a plumber. My grandfather is in shambles, walks all crooked and @#$!, just got double knee replacement surgery. You are NEVER home. My Popps works like 70-80 hours a week easy, AND he is always on callfor both jobs. Plumbing as a whole is taking a hit with the economy, and its for a variety of reasons. Parts/supplies are outsourced and companies make theparts so that they break, this way you have to buy more parts. Right now there are a lot of people who lost jobs, and slap a name on the side of a van with'handywork' or 'plumbing' afterward. They dont usually know the skill 100% and therefore also charge less. It isnt the same quality of work. Basically it is and isn't recession proof if you get me, lol.

As far as fireman goes, its def. a great job. Hard to get into because everyone knows its great pay and you only have to work a few days a month. You canbecome EMT certified, but its up to you, but its def. a plus to know on the job. Again, you are on call all day, every day. And people forget, your life is atstake.

It's a real shame because people who dont go to school and want a better life and dont have many options, they RESORT to these kinda jobs. Not to say u area failure if you dont go to school at all, but these are the best jobs out there imo that don't require college. Its VERY hard work and you have to bementally there for both of them. The way I look at it, my father works as hard as he does to provide a better life for me. So, Im gonna show him better, its anagreement we have.

edit* I know someone is gonna say something about people not going to school restorting to these jobs. If you do, you are taking it the wrong way.

right now i go to school, but i have a friends who are firefighters nd they say is a real unquie job. because you see somthing different everyday.....plus yougot excellent benifits..i think it all dependa on what type of person you are..if you rather sit at a desk all day and see they same thing everyday thats you,but to me thats madd boring.....also im more of a hands on person...

As of 08 the position per applicant ratio was 500 to 1 in Los Angeles. We get burned down all the time.

that funny all this csah that these ppl make is crazy. i ive just fine with my 30 to 40 k a year.(i cant have more cuz that makes ppl reedy. IMO)

I switched my major from Audio Engineer (Money doesn't look good at all from research) to EMT/Paramedic. Am I better off goin as a Fire/Paramedic? Plan ongetting my EMT license at a CC, also lookin for a good Paramedic School after that (any suggestions?, not worried about location)

I thought about doing truck driving.
Heard if you OWN your own truck, your 6 figured guaranteed.

Pretty much if you top out at UPS, you are guaranteed six figures...
their top rate is approaching 33 per hour...and they never work only 8 hr days. They average 10 to 11 hrs a day..
And not only that, they get a union, and most of them are to the point where they get 6 paid weeks off plus 5 personal and 5 sick days paid as welll...all paidholidays..and they arent responsible for fixing the trucks in the event of breakdowns or something going wrong. We have full tiime supervisors that havedegrees that leave their positions to become drivers and never look back..truck drivers, even those working for companies make quap
