its just different in every state, they have different requirements.

in FL, you have to be an EMT/FF..... and then some go to paramedic/FF, for more pay.

but i know up north u can just be a FF. it all depends on the requirements of where u try and get a job.

^ maybe where you live, which is probably a very rich incorporated village/town or something like that. police, fire and other public jobs vary greatly bytheir location. Like Sik said in Miami they get paid great and have benefits like crazy, they are one of the few professions left with a meaningful pensionplan. For police in Miami-Dade they are given a pension of the average of their last 5 years on the job so a lot of them take light duty, heavy OT detailstheir last 5 years just to bump the OT and cash out.

thats a pretty ignorant thing to say, if u dont think firefighters 'use their mind' than i dont know what to tell you.

but i wouldnt expect much from someone with 'hyphy' in their name.

That's not ignorant at all, what hyphy means by using your mind is a job where you could be sitting at a desk all day, aka non-physical. Firefighters haveto make quick, life and death decisions, no doubt, but they are needed much more for their physical skill than mental.

I'm going into higher education, respectable pay and I will still be able to walk when I'm 60.

Which is why I want to get out of my job.

Im in the NY Carpenters Union.(Floor Layer)

The money is good but people that are 40 cant even walk anymore.

Body takes a beating.

I would like to be able to run and play basketball with my kids when Im 30.

Not have knee and back surgery.

My pops is a trucker and his income is really high but the gas that goes into the truck sucks up most of the money

This is true, if you are willing to be away from home all the time going very long distances.

i understand that firefighting is generalized as being physical.... but trust me, there are plenty of FF that are still walking at 60. not to mention retiredfor 10 years already living comfy off of their pension plans. id much rather have a career that gives me a sense of pride and provides me with a story nearlyevery single shift, rather than getting into the same routine 9-5 job, that just doesnt sound like life, regardless of the paycheck. and alot of Departments, require you to have a 4 year degree if you plan on testing to become a Lieutenant or higher. so "higher education" is needed as well.

the fire academy was very physically demanding, but the book work/written tests were twice as hard. there is A LOT more to firefighting than just putting thewater on the fire.

u ventilate a room full of heat/fire the wrong way, bye bye room.....

We have full tiime supervisors that have degrees that leave their positions to become drivers and never look back..truck drivers, even those working for companies make quap

I work at UPS and driver do make bread, however they are commiting 50-60 hours a week, basically 10-12 hours shifts a day 5 days a week. therefore youdon't really have a social life other than the weekends.

My dad ran his own trucking company , its good because you stack your bred and just go everywhere.

im 19 and im thinking of getting into having a rent house in texas , and a apartment in NYC so i can go back and fourth.

You're still not getting it... of course fire fighters have to be smart, but without their physical skills they cannot function and it's a physicallydemanding career. It doesn't matter what you think about a 9-5 desk job and I'm not trying to convince you of anything, just that it's not ignorantto say you'd rather work with your mind than your body (or you rather not work with your body).

Different people prefer different careers and lifestyles, and if you were to say that a person working a routine desk job is not capable of living life to thefullest you would be being pretty insulting and actually somewhat ignorant.

And by going into higher education I mean academia not just that I'm getting advanced degrees, so stop trying to be slick by quoting phrases and thinkingyou're making a point.

i feel the exact opposite way about the hours, i think having off entire days is real legit.

and the heat, yea its bad, but in FL, the fires arent THAT often, so all the FF i know, actually look forward to an actual fire call, rather than more medicalstuff/car accidents.

not to mention, almost all departments give FF a "Kelly Day" once a month, that is a paid shift off..... so you get a 5 day stretch of no work, with24 hours being paid.

^ depends what state you work in.

FL works 24 hrs on, than 48 hrs off (10 days a month/120 days a year).

My sister is a truck driver and she drives state to state and train other drivers for her company and she brings in 1,500 a week

As the old cliche goes... nothing in life is guaranteed except taxes and death. 6 figures is NOT guaranteed.

Truckers, and in particular Owner-Operators make up the bulk of my clientele (I do truck and equipment leasing/financing). Let me tell you right now, justcause you own your own truck DOES NOT GUARANTEE 6 FIGURES.

Trucking as an industry is down right now... and has been since late 2007. When fuel prices spiked in '08 it put a lot of dudes out of business. YourGROSS INCOME might be well over $100K but after fuel, insurance, maintenance, etc... it can be difficult to clear 6 figures. There are Owner-Operators thatcan make over $100K a year but they have to be in the right place and have the right job. I would say on average, if a truck is running full time, pertruck/trailer you might pull in $60-80k AVG.

The real money is in the dudes who got the business sense to build it up into an actual company. Some of my clients have been doin it for sometime and haveslowly but surely built it into a legitimate business. They run under their own authority (as opposed to leasing on with a larger carrier) and broker theirown loads. They run multiple trucks and trailers and put drivers in each of their trucks. Drivers typically get paid by the mile, and often its not much. Here is a simplified breakdown of how you make it happen

Truck generates $80K a year NET
You pay the driver $50K a year GROSS
You take home the white meat... $30K/yr per truck
You have 10 trucks/trailers on the road = 10 x $30K = $300K

Now this is just rough numbers of course. Like I said, if you are in the right place at the right time you might be able to make more. It also depends onwhat type of freight you are hauling. I see a lot of dudes trade up from hauling general dry freight to reefers (refrigerated freight like produce... notbuds) because reefers typically pay more (and higher margins). If you haul specialized stuff like certain types of tanker freight (hazardous liquids, etc...)you can probably make even more, but I believe you need certain certifications to do so.

Psh we need to talk.

2009!?  If you were really that interested in it you would go talk to some cats at a firehouse instead of tooling around on the internet.

Get of off yo shoulders, and go see about that money if you really want it.
