A Fab Five thread appreciation pops up at least once a year...kind of like the Penny Hardaway Appreciation Vol. "What could've been", and NBA onNBC Appriciation thread,

I didn't like the Florida team that won back to back titles, but they mopped the floor on their way to two titles. They didn't dominate in the regularseason, they went in #3, but once the tournament started they ran through everybody. They mopped the floor with a pretty good UCLA team to win their firsttitle. They ran through the tourney again the following year, beating up on UCLA again, and Ohio State.

I know they were freshmen, but the Fab Five went into the 1992 ranked #6 and they had a great tournament run until they got spanked by Duke in the Nationaltitle game (71-51). The following year, they were ranked #1 and had a solid tournament run, but we all know what happened against North Carolina.

There is no doubt that the Fab Five was more influential. However, to say they are better basketball wise, that is just laughable.

Nothing like hypothetical domination.......

the florida comment was a joke
I hated those Florida squads, can't take away from what they did those two years. You know, actually win instead of hypothetically winning.

They had Ed O'Bannon for sure , but Shawn Kemp and Jason Kidd weren't locks for UNLV . Kentucky was all over Shawn Kemp .

I don't think a lot of you understand the HISTORICAL significance (record wiped away or not) of the Fab 5...that UNLV squad was indeed dope, but you'recomparing a relatively veteran-laden squad to five FRESHMEN. There's no comparison IMO...both schools had great teams in the early 90's, but what theFab 5 did was flat out remarkable, and will most likely never be done again.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the Fab Five, they were a great team. They actually had their dominating run when they wereSophomores.

However, saying they are better than that Rebel team, don't know about that. They destroyed Duke by 30 pts in the title game, think about that. That isflat out remarkable, and they did better the next year despite a questionable title game against a very loaded Duke team. The 90-91 Rebel teams ran througheverybody, they didn't lose a game. Sure they played in a weak conference, but when they did play a solid team they whooped them too (#2 Arkansas).

1989-90

Main article: 1989-90 UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball team

The season it all came together for the Runnin' Rebels was 1989-90. Future NBA star Larry Johnson transferred from Odessa College, joining Greg Anthony, Stacey Augmon, David Butler and Anderson Hunt. The Rebels began the season ranked No. 1 in almost every poll and rolled through the competition. UNLV suffered a surprising loss at New Mexico State and finished the season as co-champions of the Big West Conference. However, Johnson and Co. flexed their muscles in the Big West Tournament, running away with the title and the No. 1 seed in the West Region. In NCAA Tournament play, the Rebels toughest game came in the third round at Oakland, Calif., when Ball State hung tough before falling 69-67. UNLV also ended Loyola Marymount's Cinderella season with a 131-101 thrashing in the regional final. The win set up a semifinal match with Georgia Tech at McNichols Arena in Denver. Trailing by seven at the half, UNLV rallied for an 89-80 triumph and a date in the championship. The 1990 NCAA Championship was all UNLV as an 18-0 run midway through the second half sent Duke reeling as the Rebels ran up the most lopsided victory in championship history, 103-73. Hunt was named Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four for his performance as the Rebels finished the season 35-5. The squad was inducted into the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.

1990-91

Main article: 1990-91 UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball team

Billed as one of the greatest teams of all time, the 1990-91 squad became the first team in 12 seasons to go undefeated in the regular season (27-0). A perfect record of 18-0 captured the Big West crown and earned the Rebels the No. 1 seed in the West Region. UNLV also flexed its muscles in a rout of then-No. 2 Arkansas in Fayetteville. The Rebels rolled through regional play with wins over Montana, Georgetown, Utah and Seton Hall before a showdown with Duke in the Final Four at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis. Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, and Christian Laettner kept the Rebels in check all evening and ended UNLV's dreams of back-to-back championships and the first perfect season since Indiana in 1976. The 79-77 loss ended UNLV's season with a record of 34-1. The team was inducted into the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.

You are right though, there is no comparison, that Rebel squad was leaps and bounds better than the Michigan squad.

Personally the UNLV Runnin' Rebels of 1989-1991 are the Nebraska Cornhuskers of 1994-1995, simply

I agree w. everything you said....the success the fab 5 had as a whole as freshmen/sophomores was ridiculous....that being said, the talent thatUNLV had trumped the Fab 5...there's no debate.

However, the impact and historical significance that the fab 5 had on just about ANYBODY who plays ball is apparent at just about any function where peoplehoop. Baggy shorts, black socks, etc....they were the trend-setters.

A fantasy match up would most definitely be seeing these two teams play one another....no one would know the outcome, so all we're left with ishypotheticals...

I agree. I just don't think UF would have won that matchup.

Yeah, 5 top freshmen coming in like that? FIVE??

As far as F5 never winning a chip... Pats didn't win the SB but they will still go down as one of the greatest teams we've ever seen no?

And the NFL only has 32 teams.

College bball is so vast, that there are bound to be STELLAR teams that don't win it all in every single season.

Basically, just b/c UNLV won a title in a given year and the F5 did NOT win one, doesn't automatically make UNLV > F5 as IRON MAN is trying to make itseem.

For instance, Michigan won the title in 89, the year before UNLV. Glen Rice, Rumeal Robinson, Loy Vaught, Terry Mills, Sean Higgins all got drafted. Yet no onehas mentioned them as having one of the best squads.

That has alot to do with the fact that they won 3 SB's prior to that with the same QB and alot of core players. Had they just been some teamthat rose up for 1 season and did what they did, they'd probably end up dust in the wind.

I'd take 92 Duke, UNLV, Fab 5, 96 UK, and 05 UNC over that Florida squad.

Nah bruh! You are missing the point. Never have I not called the Michigan Fab Five squads less than great. They were a great team and had a lot of influenceon the game. Hell, I don't even rock white sox....ever!

Saying the Michigan Fab 5 squads were great is one thing. Saying they are better than the Running Rebel teams that have been mentioned is another. Think ofthe context of your argument.

The Fab Five took the world by storm, as a movement but what does that have to do with what happened on the basketball court. The Running Rebels are widelyregarded as the best college basketball team ever.....ever.

Basically, just b/c UNLV won a title in a given year and the F5 did NOT win one, doesn't automatically make UNLV > F5 as IRON MAN is trying to make it seem.
I have to disagree with this statement. As a title in almost always puts a cherry on top of every argument. Plus, I'm not saying thatUNLV>Fab 5 only because UNLV won a title, I'm saying UNLV> Fab 5 because they were a better team overall. The Jerry Tarkanian/Larry Johnson/StaceyAugmon/Greg Anthony led Rebels were the epitome of "Beast Mode".

For the record, the UNLV team that is regarded as the best ever is the one that lost the title game to Duke
wink.gif

sorry to dredge up an old post but this one was interesting to read.

UNLV = Greatest Team Ever
Fab 5 = Greatest Influence Ever

I love both teams, but UNLV were phenomenal

.... damn I didn't even realize this was from last year. Gravedigging done fooled me.

Does anybody have any stories, articles, etc. on UNLV and their "throwing" of that Duke FF game?

Conspiracy theory
UNLV fixed its 1991 NCAA Final Four game against Duke.

Why People Believe It
UNLV was the defending champion, had not lost all season, and had humiliated Duke in the title game the year before. Also, UNLV was the NCAA's alltime renegade program (by reputation, anyway) and several Rebels were photographed in a hot tub with a man named Richie "The Fixer" Perry. We repeat: Richie "The Fixer" Perry. Not Richie "Play Hard And Try To Win, Fellas" Perry. Richie ... OK, you get it.

Upon Further Review
(On a scale of 1 to 10, how believable is this?)

One, and that's only because it was UNLV in 1990, and anything was possible at UNLV in 1990. It was like if you sent Al Capone into a saloon in the Wild West with Ron Artest.

But seriously now: if the Running Rebels wanted to fix a game, why that game? Why not shave a few points when they were favored by 30 in January? Forget the moral question. It was not in their best interest to throw that game, especially since the best players on the team (Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony) were about to turn pro.

Mostly, though, there is this: Duke had more talent than UNLV. Really, it's true. Nobody thought that at the time, because the Rebels had been so dominant and Duke's two best players were white guys. But look: Grant Hill was a better pro than Johnson, Christian Laettner was a much better pro than Augmon, and Bobby Hurley was the No. 7 pick and probably would have been at least as good as Anthony if he hadn't gotten in a car accident.
