The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

Maybe a class is in order for me but for what i like to do, which is pretty simple that is taking photos for my photo blog, JPEG seems to be the best for me. I shoot almost 99.9% in manual mode and adjust white balance to my liking all the time. The rest I just do in photoshop. I just downloaded Lightroom this weekend and it shames me to say that I honestly have the hardest time editing in that thing. Even got some filters but by the time I even use them, I feel like I even have to still photoshop them to my liking. Again...maybe I do need to take a class but I have seen photos of JPEG vs RAW comparisons but for some of the photos I have shot, I try and edit both and majority of the time always go with the JPEG version for whatever reason. I'll do some more shots in RAW though to see if maybe it's just me.

Also I rented then 135mm L and I have to say it is one hell of a lens. Just too specific for just shooting portraits but I did a little people shooting and the bokeh is awesome. I think I might pick that up over the 85mm now.

Fong, where did you rent? Locally? If so, where at?

And you might've told me where before, my memory is crap.

Here you go dude. Don't go there for the camera gear cause those guys can be punks but the rental people are cool and really good deals. I got the 135L for $35 for 3 days. Try to rent on the weekend cause you get it for Friday to Monday for the same price as a 1 day rental. SInce yesterday was a holiday, I got it for 4 days for that price.

That 135mm is an awesome lens. If Nikon ever releases one at that focal length with the bells and whistles of the 105mm then I would be all over it.

In contrast to my "RAW Only professor", I had another one who solely shot weddings, portraits, etc in JPG only. He would manually adjust WB on the fly and only edited in PS. His work came out great and if you didn't tell me if the shot was taken in JPG, I would have said it was shot in RAW as well.

At the end of the day if you are able to produce awesome shots with just JPG, then more power to you as you have the skills to fine tune your image the in camera instead of having to rely heavily on post.

In regards to LR, I am one of those people who do about 90-95% of my edits in LR and then 5-10% in PS. To me if I got my shot right in camera, then all I would need is to bring out the tones I want from an image. But if I screwed up, then I would be able to dial the exposure back in without having to worry at all. And if any manipulation needs to happen then I bring it into PS.

But LR shines best as a photo organization tool in the way you are able to tag and categorize your photos. What I also loved most about it is when shooting in studio all I had to do was edit one photo to get the look I was going for and then I would be able to copy and paste the settings to the entire set with a single click. From there, I could fine tune some more and find the 1 or 2 pics that deserved the attention and soften the skin, brighten the eyes, clean up the hair etc.

JPG compress your photos so they look vibrant - sharp  and for the most part as soon as you download them to your PC.

With RAW, you are only seeing what the Camera would of have produce as a JPG in your LCD. Once you download them, the image becomes very unflattering as basically it is up to you to give it the final touches. If you are savy enough - you can have the same result as if you was shooting RAW, but if you are great you can have better results ....

Both the 135L and 85L are great lens - Although the 85L is the portrait shooters dream, I find myself using the 135L more in studio ...

Hey NT,

I'm going to be in NY for a school project and I need to film/shoot a couple of events and street team work.

I will be renting a couple of D800's to shoot and do video. What would be the two ideal lenses I should rent that can do that job best? Money IS an issue, so please don't recommend something too crazy and/or extravagant.

Thanks in advance!

Well at least now this gives you a source option where you can delete/modify the output of the image. COOL!

Has anyone ever gotten a press pass to an auto show before? I want to get one but I don't think it's happening since I don't work for a company. Just wondering if there's a loophole.

im going to a baseball game september 23rd and was wondering if they will allow me to take my camera ? has anyone ever taken a camera to a game before ?

here's a shot of my recent trip to the beach. No bodyboard wave riding, just strictly shooting the waves!

Canon 7D + Tokina 10-17mm + HCW Housing

Here's another shot I took in Newport Beach CA... waves were huge this day.

I take mine to Baltimore Orioles games all the time. I equip my 55-200mm and bring along my 35mm. It's been mentioned before that some venues don't allow lenses over 200mm.

That's very cool! Interested in knowing how you were able to capture that.

used my Canon 7D with a Tokina 10-17mm fisheye and a water housing.. swam out during the big surf Newport Beach had last week and took photos of the waves in the "Pocket" when theyre breaking over like this. my housing has a trigger grip so i just aim away and snap!

Nice. I'd imagine you have to be quick to catch the waves.

Any tips on how to make this better? Feel like it's missing something. Yes I know the lady's red jacket is distracting but I'm working on it -_-...She just had to get in my image.... Keko Jones I'm talking to you
