Interesting that you bring that up. I bought my sister the Humans of NY book off of Amazon a couple months back and she said she was really disappointed. She said that a lot of the pics had really skimpy stories or no stories at all. I didn't even look at it but yeah, her comments didn't really make me wanna check it out.

i think it is a cool way to add some context to portraiture, stories are important (it probably isn't so important that they be real/true, only that the elicit something for the viewer, could be emotional, a chronicling, technical, awe, strange, cool, and/or some combination of things) ; especially for those that aspire to have their work connect with others, in a sense the humans of ny is more about an idea & the stories that support it than strictly images...what i was getting at was that many bite a format without maybe the understanding or the sincerity of, the original thing...

great images! is this katz's deli?

i used to contribute to a photography thread here but haven't really been taking pictures for a few years - young kids and landscape photography don't really go well together.

A few years ago I let a friend's daughter borrow all my gear as she wanted to do photography for a HS class but couldn't afford the stuff - got it back about a year ago and just threw it in my closet.

I went on vacation this week to a little village on the west coast of Scotland and thought I'd try and shake off some of the rust - technically I think it's mostly still there but my eye just hasn't felt right. I'm really glad I did because it was some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen - everywhere you looked there was something else to see. The weather was also great - gave some nice light in the evening. It's so far north that the golden hour lasts over 2 hours too! There were a few scenes I wanted to get and I think I managed to - the post processing is going to take a while though as I only noticed all the dust on the back of my glass when I was taking long exposure stuff. I'll post the other images shortly hopefully. All my stuff was filthy and the beach wasn't the place to clean it. Some of the long exposure stuff is ruined by flare in the middle.

I took all the pictures with my 50mm manual lens - I wanted to prove that I could do it without relying on electronics and I really like the sharpness of it. I just got a variable ND filter too which was fun to play around with. Still with the D40 that I've had about 7 years now.

I did some tidying up of this image which I took for my wife the night before our 16th anniversary because she wants to post it to facebook. When I'm happy I might get a big one printed too.

It's basically as it came out of the camera - with some spots removed. I burned the silhouettes a little and added a gradient right at the bottom because there was a ridge in the beach with water which just added noise at the bottom. It was something like a 15s exposure to smooth out the water, a pretty dark ND filter, F22 and it was dusk but obviously shooting right at the dropping sun. I was most amazed that they managed to stand so still - like old timey photography. You can see our youngest is a little blurred on the left because she shrugged her shoulders part way through. I just thought it would be interesting on the spur of the moment, grabbed them, lined them up and snapped the picture. I took 3 but they basically looks the same.

Anyway here it is:

Hopefully more to follow.

Generally yeah, brings you capabilities of your camera that would make editing a breeze, or atleast more interesting.

There's a ton of features they have as far as still photography goes tho, a few I'm interested are the built in HDR thing they have running where the camera finds the best under exposed and over exposed setting to create a HDR shot. Then there's dual iso, which I'm sure we all could use, and spot metering. Whereas the indicator flashes a green line on the screen whenever you're in full focus of a landscape or subject. Too many features to name actually.

I was gonna do it earlier but I need to go buy a card reader later.
