Using a nikon d5300 and those are unedited at this time...still haven't copped lightroom yet.

Welp my external flash broke just in time for a birthday shoot this weekend. I'm debating getting a ring flash or a regular flash....any tips or suggestions?

You can pick up a Yongnuo for cheap off Amazon. If you have prime you can get it by the weekend.

Is the shoot going to be indoors or outdoors? Depends on how much you want to spend. If you go with a strobe then you're looking at also buying a battery pack. If you get a speedlight then you can buy rechargeable batteries. The difference in cost of these two options could be alot. The power of these options will vary also. I have speedlights that I worked with originally on shoots and then I started using an Alien Bee 800. I love working with the AB800 but I'm tired of lugging all my equipment around. Time to start getting assistants for my shoots.

It's at an indoor jumping place for kids. For their 2nd birthday. I'm trying to go less than 100 but I have a feeling I'll get nothing now and wait for a more responsible timing

I would go with a speedlight. More likely than not that you will find yourself wanting some more light. Be on the safe side and be prepared. Go the Yongnuo route. I think I paid 60 for mine and actually looking to invest in 2 more.

How long have your Yongnuo's lasted you? I'm thinking about just saving up for a speedlite right now since I don't need one at the moment. I'm assuming speedlites are better in quality/durability than Yongnuo's but I could be totally wrong.

The Yongnuos are speedlights. The Alien Bees are studio strobes. I have a Nikon SB-910 as well as a Yongnuo YN-560 II, and since I shoot them in manual mode I save the SB-910 for situations when I need a speedlight on camera and TTL. With that being said the Yongnuo has been great. $60 compared to $550. No brainer.

I remember watching a video and a photographer said buy whatever lights you want and really invest your money in modifiers.

So I went home on leave last week, while there my parents house was broken into and my t3i was stolen. Getting $ from my insurance but was wondering if the jump to a t5i or even 70d will be worth it?
