The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

There is so much wrong with Instagram that I've basically stopped using it. Besides the fact that it's basically made for hot girls to get attention...

- No easy switching between multiple accounts
- No desktop uploading... seriously why
- No regramming
- No Twitter preview

Are they just ignoring obvious improvements?

^^^^^I think IG still wants to be different from Twitter and what not. Even when they add some new features or things, the IG community gets in an uproar about it (ie ads on Instagram). I personally hate when people regram or even post quotes or whatever because that is what Twitter and Facebook is for. In the beginning, IG was such a small community for mostly photographers or picture enthusiast and specific to only iPhone users. Now that IG is huge and becoming bigger than Twitter, everyone from that community is jumping **** to IG. To this day, I think it is odd when I see stores with IG handles on the windows rather than Twitter of even Facebook. Or even when celebs say "I am going to Instagram that" rather than tweet that. Times have changed and only in a short amount of time.

How do you keep your same image quality when you upload your photos to IG with out cropping majority of the picture

You can't really. Assuming your only talking about IQ and not aspect ratio.... The reason why the upload quality is much worse than the original is because IG compresses the image prior to upload. They take a x.xMb image and shrink it to just xxxkb. Do you know how many images are uploaded to Instagram everyday? A LOT. And to keep costs down, they shrink the image. That's why the images appear more grainy and pixelated. It's even worse with Androids IMO.

The reason why I see that they haven't is for many reasons.

Instagram was created for "instant" in-the-moment photos rather than carefully shot, almost ad like, photos like it has grown to be today. Instagram is more about the likes now than sharing fun or special moments. Or, at least it was. Why would someone re-gram an image if that image is unique to you and only you. These pictures were meant to be taken with mobile devices and not DSLRs so it makes sense why you cant upload on the desktop. Desktop uploading takes the "instant" away from it. Of course, it has evolved into a much different kind of medium to share photos. It's like some people are using instagram like they would 500px (a social media platform for photographers).

And there's no Twitter preview probably because it is now owned by Facebook. (Who knows. I'm probably wrong anyways) The reason why you see Vine previews is because Twitter owns Vine.

I'm also thinking that the reason there's no integrated switching between multiple accounts is to deter spam accounts.

I agree that certain trends within IG can seem pointless. But I also think IG can be extremely helpful and resourceful when utilized correctly. I think hashtags are great marketing for business to get attention and spark interest. Like Fong said, it started out as picture enthusiasts sharing photos that were pleasant and pleasing to the eye. Now businesses, especially, but not limited to restaurants are able to showcase their product in a way that can impress people who wouldn't have given them the time of day in the past. During travel I've found IG to be tremendously helpful with hashtags, stumbling across pages and places you wouldnt have otherwise found through the internet (so many examples and experiences to name), especially with newer start ups. The location check-in with photos with the link that can open in maps and can navigate to your final destination. Being in a foreign country its nearly impossible to read signs, or communicate with non-english speaking locals and find your way around sometimes. But with IG I think it definitely keeps your interests within reach.

Hey guys, what DSLR Gimbal you using?  I like the ghost, but it's pricey.  Footage is amazing.  Also I like the birdycam.  Any experiences you can share will be apprecuated.

Took a trip oto the Chi over my four day weekend. Finally dusted the camera off and have to edit a couple more but in the meantime please provide honest feedback. If you feel is harsh, feel free to PM me. Thanks!

I'd say 90% of the time I'm shooting manual. The other 10% I'm in aperture-priority.

Just grab whatever camera you have and practice. You can read and watch videos, but I think it all comes together when you actually try it out.

Good luck!

If it's a "planned" shoot I'll do manual.

When I'm just walking around, 90% of the time I'm on AV.

I want to get into video and wanted to buy a glidecam hd. I hear that they are pretty heavy but the video comes out so smooth.

Nice.   Checking out the glidecam led me to the laing P3/4 stabilizer.   Cheaper and "better" than the glide is what Im gathering so far from youtube videos lol.
