The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

I don't use cloth ever since I starting investing in Savage seamless paper. I order them from Amazon and have not regretted getting any rolls yet. The lighting could use a little work as well. I also strongly believe in retouching when shooting portraits especially with side lighting which embellishes bad skin. You can practice editing with sample RAW images from Model Mayhem http://www.modelmayhem.com/forums/thread/76. Keep shooting and finding your grove! Here are some recent edits I did from MM (not my images). Click image for Hi-Res copy.

I actually picked up a white Savage seamless (short one) last week. I did some self-portraits and took some photos of my brothers yesterday and, I LOVE it. I picked up some clamps from home depot to use with this cheap stand I have. It photographs so much better than the muslin, which I spent what seemed like an hour ironing, and annoys me that I can still see through it. but I may still use some fabrics because I like the creative, yet simple, designs and they're thicker. I picked the seamless paper up from a local camera store, but my only regret is not ordering the full sized one, I'll probably order it sometime soon, along with another black one to replace the muslin I have.

As far as the photo I have, I know the skin looks bad, but I tried some skin softening in LR. It didn't help much, obviously. I really wasn't too sure where to go with it from there. Do you use PS? I'm really trying to learn how to use these programs, but they can be so difficult to understand. Even some of the tutorials, when they use words like layers, curves, and masks it completely loses me. Any suggestions on where to start? I'm pretty much a blank slate when it comes to PS, lol. I know how to open the program with an image and that's about it.

Those are some good edits btw!

With this crazy blizzard coming my school preemptively canceled classes until 1PM tomorrow.

Tried to shoot some stuff but ultimately I was scared I'd break my camera. That lack of weather sealing

Yeah I have a few rolls white, black, thunder gray, and suede gray. When I look back at my early work I am embarrassed to show it to anyone but at the same time I tell I came a long way. As far as editing goes it will take a long time to master it. I can't tell you how many YouTube and CreativeLive videos I watched, and books and blogs I read. One of the best guys to follow on youtube is this guy https://www.youtube.com/user/PhlearnLLC .

I'm on the fence for the Fuji 56mm 1.2. Anyone here have it?
Someone on here has it, they posted a pic a few pages back. It's next on my list, but tough to justify since I've got the 60mm already. Debating renting it next weekend...

Word.

Two totally different lenses. 1.2 vs 2.4? Highly recommend selling your 60 for the 56!!

does anyone develop their own film? I'm wondering if it's cheaper in the long run to do it myself. Paid $8.37 to get 24 shots put on a CD. :\

Obviously digital is functionally better and much more efficient, but shooting film is still fun!

I've always wanted to. Color is a lot more difficult than B&W, though. Where did you go?

I'm new to photography as my mom gave me her Olympus OM-1 she got back in the late 70s or early 80s. So idk if this is a great place to go to but I went to this actual photography store which deals with all sorts of prints, professional wedding pictures, and the like. It's close to my college so that's where I decided to go.

Now doing tintype would be sick as hell! :smokin

Learning to edit really changed my world. I'm no where near where I want to be, but being able to make pictures more visually appealing and correcting small things is dope.

Sup guise, photography newb here who has never owned a camera outside of the one attached to a smart phone, also an architectural major who just enrolled into an architectural photography class. I am now in the market for a dslr and would really like yall's opinion on which to go with. My budget has my options narrowed down to only entry level cameras so I am looking at the following bundles from bestbuy...

I don't think you can go wrong with any of these. Just choose one and then be happy with it.
I can vouch for the D3200 as a "beginner" camera. I've been shooting a little over a year and I'm still using it. I got the same kit but I don't really use the 55-200. My advice is to figure out what you're gonna be shooting and then buy the appropriate lenses. I highly recommend the 35 f/1.8. It's on my body 95% of the time.

Are you opposed to buying used?

I'm not, but the reason I am looking to purchase through bestbuy is because of the financing options offered with a bestbuy credit card.

That's what I did and bought the D3200 package deal there along with a new Macbook. D3200 has been great to me so far and I'm probably going to be purchasing that 35mm f/1.8 lens pretty soon.

Use the (half) macro feature alllllll the time though, and since I don't get paid for my work it's tough to justify 1k essentially just for 1.2-2.0 :\

One day though...

Did a little fishing trip this past weeked
