The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

Great Shot Fong ... I like the 2nd over the 1st, but both are great! PS When I look at it again, the 1st one is a lot cleaner.

I'm not sure if you guys are going to recognize this lighthouse from this view, but does anyone care to try and guess where was this lighthouse was feature in a movie?

Forrest Gump??? Only movie I can think off of the top of my head (is this the lighthouse in Maine?)

Definitely guilty. I honestly believe its only because its more exposed now, but not necessarily people have changed or anything. Yes people certainly do it for the likes and followers and what not, or to try to cause other people fomo, but its only because its so easily accessible through our devices now. These spots have ALWAYS been there. Those GGB or Bay Bridge shots? Hell any photographer on embarcadero selling cheap prints has had those for years. Arizona or Antelope Canyon? Before IG there were post cards of that and all over flickr. Those spots have always been desired. But things become cliche for a reason. I do still think its good that it inspires other people to get up and out, even if theyre getting the same shot. Maybe its how they're starting off. Or maybe they just needed to see it with their own eyes. I don't necessarily think more people are going to Yosemite or wherever now, its always been a crowded **** show there.

I think you have to expect with any image, someone else may have gotten that shot before or will again in the future. Its what you grab and can tell from it yourself though. I've gone to some places and setup the same composition of something i've seen, as sometimes some spots really only have that one view. Its nice when you can get a different perspective. But going out and shooting and seeing why it works that way helped when i discovered new spots or went to more spots, especially in framing. And it really just depends on the mission of the shoot or trip. If some peoples only goals are to only see the popular sights, then yeah they'll only get what they've seen in pics before but now seeing it in person. Its nice to venture a little deeper or go to less popular spots or better yet, unknown spots. Thats why some people are so protective but thats a whole nother story.

One more thing - if you dont like what youre seeing, only person to blame is honestly yourself. We choose who we follow and what we see. If we're only talking about ig there are millions of people out there that havent been discovered, its so easy to get wrapped up in a small bubble.

Good response. And just as an FYI, I wasn't trying to call out anyone are particular photographers. It was just more of a response to just to have a conversation cause I was bored at work. Reality is, I actually don't care about about these photography trends and I actually love everyone shooting the way they are. The best thing about this hobby is I genuinely love it and appreciate everyone doing it and don't even care if I am never as good. Even to single out you in particular, I think it is wild someone even from NT is producing images that you have done. Hell, everyone on here is making great stuff and it's wild the kind of talent that is out there.

Maybe, just maybe if I did this for a job I'd hate how there is so much exposure to this profession cause it could take away from my business but for the most part, it is all love on my end.

@Fongstarr
, how did you get to that spot on Treasure Island?

The catch to this spot is someone has to drop you off at this location cause there is no parking around (that I know of). This is pretty much the spot where you need to be dropped off:

Literally there is a trail that leads down the hill to an opening there. It's all sand so don't wear any of your heaters when your going down. I always wear Timberland books lately just so I don't have regrets on my kicks. But there's a lot of area there where you can even roll with a crew and all shoot the same thing. I mean it's like being near an epic picnic spot. Really cool and even though all the shots come out the same, it's really that nice of a shot to get.

I get what you're getting at. I look at it like this. If you're willing to drive 6-8 hours to hike and take photos, you genuinely want to take photos. Even if it's because you saw someone do the same thing.

But honestly, you should go to Antelope Canyon. Never been, but place looks absolutely beautiful.

^^^^^^Maybe one day. I do have like priorities of where I want to go cause of money reason. Arizona was definitely a place I wanted to check out within the US but now I think I am going to put that on the back burner till later. I am actually headed to Mexico this coming up weekend to Puerto Vallarta. It will be more of vacation but I am sure I can get photos there. I honestly don't know of the place that much but I am sure this is a highly photographed spot off the coast of there. Can't wait to shoot it and just be there really:

To add to what you said.........especially about trends. Regardless of whatever cities we live in, or choose to visit there will always be locations (some are high traffic tourists spots, others down low locations that a few enthusiasts know of) that people will shoot, and yes there will be shots taken from the same angles, etc......but Ive always said no two images are ever the same. There will always be subtleties that distinguish the shooter because after all.......we are just trying to convey the image from our own perspectives.

As for the whole trend of tresspassing/risky location/rooftop/etc shots. I don't mind it either because sometimes its just a reflection of the shooter. We all have different philosophies on the entire risk vs reward aspect of shooting.

From my experiences, 10-12 years ago I was more of a risk taker.....now in my 30s with a different perspective there is more at stake. The legal stuff especially.....going for certain shots could cost me a lot of time and money.

Oh definitely, and hopefully mine didnt sound defensive or anything, you know me. Definitely appreciate your comments. Trends come and go, and some we follow, some we dont, but the ones that strictly only follow trends dont stay around, and thats fine, we'll still be here.

Will definitely say Antelope Canyon (upper) is beautiful but also incredibly stressful, and you have to pay extra for a photography tour vs the regular tour. Since I never post in this thread heres an uncropped version of the one I posted on ig a week ago or so.

Is it worth it? I mean, you're literally on the ground with a bunch of other photographers getting the same shot. From what I know, Fong I dont think you'd like it at all. Summer is obviously the worst time to go but its also when you can get the light beams. Then again you can just goto lower antelope canyon and have less crowds, no beams, but beautiful canyons still.

Also saw some people talking about astro photography, heres one from Mt Rainier when I went to washington about a month ago. Not too happy with the edit on this one but was a crazy hike to shoot this and get it aligned with the mountain.

yeap that's the one ... beautiful out here in Maine ..... wish I had more time - havent really done what I want to do - oh well.

I had visited the area years back (fishing trip with dad and uncles).....beautiful scenery, ales me wish I had picked up photography many years ago. We used to do a lot of these short road trips!

^ Nice Fong! I need to look into some wide glass.

Anyone interested in Canons new 35L II? The sheep in me wants it cause I was already planning on getting the old 35L.

I have to say it again but it's odd how no one really went out and got that Tamron 15-30mm. I don't even know what to think of it even though I shoot with it almost 90% of the time. When I view on a 100% crop, something about my pics just don't seem great, but that is at a 100%. Of course my Canon L lenses are way sharper but it's not by a whole lot. I'd still recommend the lends if that is the focal length you are looking for.

And if I had all the money in the world, I would get the 35mm L. I'd actually trade it for my 24mm L now cause that lens is getting totally neglected now.

kudos to you for doing it during the day .. in the summer.

It was actually a breezy day. Wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for that. This is my 2nd time doing it cause the first time, my girl got winded fast and we went back down.

^^^^^I rented the 14mm version 1 and it was a horrible. The thing had so much flare issues and photos just came out really bad in the corners. Maybe the version 2 is better but from what I hear, both versions were never near as good as the Nikon 14-24mm and that was a zoom lens.

Can everyone post whatever was used for each shot/post?  haha.

Anyways are those filters a waste of money?  The circular polarizer filter is advertised to improve outdoor shots.   And speaking of outdoor shots which would be better, Pancake 24mm or the 10-18mm?

Also if anyone is interested in a D40x PM me.  Havent looked at the thing since getting a Canon

Thanks fellas.
