The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

Being passionate and consistent about it will allow you to make money.

Opportunities will come up as people see your work and as you showcase your work.

If its obvious you're in it for the money, people will sense it as this is an art.

Passion first, income later.

I hear you but what are some better avenues to display and showcase to people who would actually think about paying you have your IG's & Flickr's, tumblr's but what other outlets are available.

Start with the circle of people you know if real life.

Let them HAVE a good experience with you and they'll tell their circle of people they know.

Photography is very largely referral based.

I personally get a handfull of gigs through IG and quite a bit through facebook.

But the majority of gigs is through referrals from people who either got a great experience from me for free or next to nothing.

Gotta start somewhere.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS SUGGEST IS A GOOD WAY TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF SHOOTING? i need a side hustle and considering i like using my camera anyway why not use it to make some good money

From my experience, working for free/volunteering puts your name out there for people who are interested. I did the photography for a banquet one of the student orgs at my college hosted and the pictures from that event led to me doing the graduation shoots for those graduating seniors in that org.

given how ubiquitous images are these days i think one would be better served, at least if you're trying to make money, to look at photography as a business, the artist's approach has its merits but can't count on opportunity finding you...i would hit up craigslist looking for different opportunities, you may have to work on the cheap or for free (if the situation is right a offers you growth) to start. you can also work on figuring out who are the folk most likely to be in need of some photographic services and figure out how to make yourself available to them?

*edit* implied is that you would be pursuing the type of photography you'd like to be paid for, but approaching that like a business; that is proving your competence, knowing your consumer(s) and competition, etc....

#sidebar...yikes, the new rx10 iii is a beastly bridge camera!!!

Finally bought a website domain + put one together last night.

Went with a 1 year sub to square space. Took a few hours.

SO much more work to do before I start really directing traffic there. :x

Peep it when you get a chance:

Its been a crazy 6 months since i started photographing people.

its growing at a faster pace than I have time in the day to maintain. Which is a fantastic problem to have.

On top of pursuing photography I have a 40+ hr/week career as a software developer, a wife and a life.

Its crazy how time consuming BUT how fulfilling photography is. I swear the least time consuming part is framing and taking the photo

There are a few apps for your phone that hold contests and prizes for certain pictures featuring certain items or themes. But honestly unless you know somebody gearing up to pay for ANYONE to take pictures without any experience don't expect to get paid "well" anytime soon. Work on your craft and the money will follow
another non serious photo i edited for practice. i was just messing with a video light i have and took a picture. decided to edit for practice. what can i improve on edit wise? just know im not trying to go for a specific style or to be unique. im just editing the photo to make it look right . heres a before and after

I think you did pretty well. Not much could be done to improve, from my stand point. But that's mostly due to the lack of variety of colors or focal points in the picture. Pretty much just subject and background, basically shades of brown and black and grey

I'm in the process of making a squarespace site for my work now. I'm still undecided on a logo to use

I like that sqaure space if very easy to use.... VERY time consuming, but not difficult.

As a general rule of thumb, when you're taking a portrait, you want to select a single auto-focus point on the eye closest to the camera.

This is especially crucial when you're shooting a large aperture and creating a shallow depth of field.

It looks like the sharpest point of this photo is the nose... it should be the eyes.

Edit looks spot on tho. :pimp:

Cam should be here by mid next week. Hopefully early next Tues so I can have a day to play with it.

I have a shoot in mind and will likely go to modelmayhem

i appreciate the feedback. glad you like the edit. yeah i didnt mean to take this to be serious. it was on a tripod so i hit autofocus and shot it. somehow all the random shots i take of this friend are out of focus haha. i'll make up for it eventually and i will definitely keep the focus tip in mind thanks. i know about it, but im sure i'll mess up when its actually time to be serious lol.

btw might go to bodega bay with my grandparents to help them crab fish. never done it before, but they do it all the time. will try to do photography there if i go. still debating

I like that you're trying to perfect your craft. That's a great start.

For some reason, the edited photo looks less natural to me. It's almost as if the shadows were inverted or something.

Anyways, for a shot like that, I probably went portrait. I know you're just practicing your editing, but also practicing your composition will definitely help you in the long run. You did a good job on the white balance. It's a little too yellow for me, but that's just my personal preference.

You're off to a good start. Keep practicing and happy shooting!

For what it's worth, her's how I would have done it; albeit quickly, and without filters.

Finally came about 5pm today and I was watching the tracking info since this morning and was super eager

First couple of shots outside made me feel right at home and the next few shots inside reminded me the necessity of adjustments differences from outside pics and inside pics. But ultimately, I still got it

Can't believe I got this cam with the lenses for the price. Most impressive the Sigma 70-300mm lens that I got. It's awesome lol better than the Nikkor 70-210mm I had last time. Haven't tried macro shooting in it's on lens "macro mode" from 200-300mm but can't wait to try it. May take a day and go downtown and take pics like the people I hate but I gotta find something to shoot

One from Easter weekend.

And one from my nude photo class. Got some more to post but this is the only one suitable for NT. Didn't ho too OD on the touch ups but I did remove all of her birth marks. Sort of gave it a little too unrealistic look but I thought it looked ok for what it is.
