The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

hey guys

been stricly a concert photographer but my boss asked if i can shoot his kid's birthday party at the gymnastics studio (7) and havent done anything like that before.

i got the a7s and lighting should be good so figure i wont need a flash or tripod really but wondering if i should be good wiht just my 24-200 or if i should borrow a 55mm prime as well.

figure should be pretty easy but any tips/shot advice would be great!
24-200 would be good enough. One thing you could do is use the high speed priority to take continuous shots. It would give you more to work with at the end

I have a Sony a6000 and only have the 18-50 mm that comes with it. Looki to buy zoom lenses ....which length should I get 70-200 is what I was looking at or is there something else you recommend and also what is a good length for prime lenses. I am a beginner by the way. Thanks in advance

Took some pics downtown today. Fallin' in love with the Sigma for macro shooting and really cannot wait to get the 17-50mm

I didn't bother to edit any of em, just didn't feel like it

other than the 1st image it seems most of these are lacking critical focus, they look really soft...did you use af or manually focus?

what type of photography are you interested in? that should help inform your buying decisions for both prime & zoom lenses, if you aren't sure what you are or will be interested in it might be better to just hold off on new lenses and experiment with the 16-50 for a minute until you get a good feel for things. if you really want to try out different/faster lenses you can take advantage of the a6000's ability to use many different lenses via adapters...some of which are super cheap which would allow the use of older lenses though without autofocus or any communication with the camera, but this allows you to experiment with some decent glass for the low...

Does anyone else use other skin retouching programs, or does everyone use photoshop/lightroom?

You can try Capture One but there are not as many tutorials for it. LR and PS are the best retouching tools in the industry paired with a Wacom tablet.

I'll check that out, there's another I was looking at called portrait pro.
I'll probably need to buckle down and learn different ways to retouch skin.

I learned how to use frequency and separation but I don't feel that is always needed

anyone with experience using the Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD lens? Was looking into what portrait lens to get between that and the 70-200mm 2.8 VRII lens for the Nikon.

The nikkor is superior... but it comes with a heavy price tag

I've shot both on a nikon d7000

by no means will you be unhappy with the tamron. If you can use it as a tax write off, might as well go with the nikkor

Yea i was checking out some sample photos of both lenses on Flickr and i found the Nikkor one to be the better lens out of the two although DxO Mark rated the Tamron higher than the Nikkor.

Thanks for your input. Looks like my portrait lens will be the Nikkor 70-200

70-200mm is fine. As far as prime depends on what you're looking to shoot mostly

Manual focus. Was excited to be out taking shots again was being sloppy

DxO is great but real world examples always trump the statistics.

I didnt dislike the tamon at all. I did like 10 shoots with it.

for prime lenses maybe you could look through your catalog of your favorite shots on lightroom and see which focal length theyre at. it could give you a better target for which prime to go with, crop factor in mind.

Is the nikon still the camera recommended for beginners? I want to get more into photography but I don't have the budget at the moment to buy a 600+ camera. Any great beginner cameras around the $200 price range? Good for graduation pics? Family reunions, weddings.

^ nowadays I think they're both pretty even especially for the average user no offense. I used to be a canon fanboy.. Until I saw how much I was spending in Highschool for a camera...1300$ for a Nikon d80 kit lmao and its competition at that time was the canon rebel. I still have that camera...as much as I wanted a canon, the d80 had much better everything, metering, feel, lenses etc. at least for what I was paying at that time. What really matters, is understanding lighting. The camera is a tool, you are the photographer, novice or pro... It doesn't matter. I think they both offer cameras in that 200-500 price range, you cant go wrong with either. Use dpreview for comparing, feel the cameras out, and enjoy!

Jus went through this exact process a cpl weeks ago.

Decided that the d3300 is the best bang for your buck camera out there by dpxo mark standards and cameradecision.com comparisons. Looked at alotttttt of cameras. The others that stood out for value to performance where the a6000 and pentax k50 has silly good reviews regaurding image quality. If your trying to take video it gets alot more complicated and theres really nothing good for the cheap.

as said above, the camera is just a tool (there are people shooting feature length films on iphones!); true enough each particular manufacturer has little differences that may or may not work better for people (which i think also happens especially when one gets used to a particular system), but generally they are a going to offer similar functionality...if the use cases you mentioned are what you plan to use a camera for, it might be better to either buy used or save to get a more capable camera, because while those things may seem fairly similar each might require very different capabilities --- and if you want the flexibility to do those thing decently spending a bit more will likely make it a lot easier...

picked up a few different lenses recently, a couple zooms, a 135mm, and this monster:

1000

it's an anamorphic lens, i mounted it to an 100mm lens and my camera, it looks properly comedic:

700

he image comes out stretched like this:

1000

when corrected looks like this when corrected (with further edits)

1000

makes for a wider field of view but with the depth of field possible with a telephoto lens...this was at f16 though because focusing is really difficult, but it is a really cool look
