The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

Someone keeps asking me to do a portrait headshot for them - guess they need one like ASAP for some internship thing. I've only been shooting this month and only take shots at one event. Any tips for this headshot? I looked back a few pages and saw the tips on the portraits and they were good. Currently shooting with a Nikon 3300 and the lenses that came with it (18-55mm and 55-200mm)

use the 55-200 preferably at 200. That will put your lowest aperture probably at f/5.6 which is fine for a headshot but use a tripod with VR turned OFF.

If you don't use a studio setup with lights and stuff, that can be okay.... you can still get a better looking headshot than a lot of amateurs if your lighting, framing, composition, and expression are on point.

500px is a great resource to check out. heres a search for "business headshot" sorted by highest "pulse" (internal rating system)

here is peter hurley... arguably the best headshot photographer out there

Peter Hurley has lots of resources on youtube and every time i watch him i learn something new whether its about photography or how to deal with a client. Love his energy.

I feel like crap sometimes reading through here. I just shoot. Lol

hey, youre getting paid for it which is something i'd love to achieve at some point during the course of my life lol

I just started charging once girls were using my work to get booked. I've always charged for weddings and events.

Dude your work is solid and very consistent. At least people know what they're going to get when they hire you!

:pimp: :pimp:
True. I am working on my concepts. I can shoot it, but the hardest part is finding the models to fit the vision. I think the biggest mistake photographers make is using the wrong model.

#dotell? how so?
I shoot how it feels, not how it looks.

^^^^^I always see you post stuff in regards to models and their professionalism. Care share stories? Is it mostly using you as a free service so they can get better gigs from your work?

sharing a few from the past few days. photo dump bc i have a lot of time on my hands right now. met up with some people from instagram for the first time ever. really positive experience as i've never been out with anyone before and tend to just creep and wander solo. tried to be more intentional about framing and not cropping as discussed recently.

Love the pp on these. Nailing that cinematics look.

Worked with an aspiring "model" yesterday and had a great time. Here's a couple shots (edited no retouching)

Definitely open to constructive criticisms. :nerd: :nerd: :nerd: :nerd: :nerd: :nerd:

^ it's certainly not bad. I would say though, that for a "set", she has almost the same hand positions and facial expressions.

Agreed. Lighting and skin tones looks on point she failed you with the consistent expression

Thx for sharing about 500px btw

Not her fault! I should have noticed it and gotten more out of her. I'm glad that was brought up though because I'm shooting another model tonight and i'll be more aware.

500px is great. Its where i started my portfolio.

That's exactly it. Models will try to find the best photographer they can to shoot them for free. It gives them a boost and then they start to book paid work from it. I look at IG as a game, so I charge to cover my time. It's really a hobby for me. Just feel that if you are going to use my work to get paid that I should get a cut. Lol

As I'm getting back out here I'm trying to find out the best way to get from great portfolio of work to being requested for paid gigs. I think what I'm going to do, especially when it comes to models, is get at least 30 flawless shots and move from pay for prints to pay with cash. Cause after speaking with my dad about what I'm trying to do next I feel like I'm moving to model and advertisement type photography and away from street and family portraits

Don't do it. Stick to family. That's where the money is.

Got a save the date wedding shoot coming up and I'm nervous!!!! First one. It's my boys so I won't charge him. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also some glass recommendation. I'm shorting with the Sony a7. I'm in NYC so location recommendation would be great too. Thanks a lot guys

Pinterest is your friend when you are looking for ideas. I would also think about your style and discuss with them their expectations.

a few during the final days of my holiday. for those that have used squarespace or wordpress to host your webpage, was there a reason you went with one vs. the other? figured it might be a good opportunity to learn something new and keep me busy outside of work.

The business side of me can't get over how oversaturated the market of family photographers. As much as I enjoy it I think dealing with models and nrands may be more enjoyable
