Just got around to watching that "Team USA doc on ESPN", it was pretty cool to see the team up close and personal. Didn't know Jermaine Jones and so many players on the team are German. Anything is possible come World Cup time. We can finish first in our group or last but I just hope we bring our A game and compete to the fullest and not get overwhelmingly embarrassed with the WHOLE WORLD watching.

Very disappointing that in a country our size we cant find 23 players locally. We are just lazy so we rely on the soccer programs in other countries to highlight players with an american connection.

It has nothing to do with being lazy to find local players.. Come on man. Our best athletes dont play soccer. If they did, they would be found. Too lazy. Smh.

I actually am not that comfortable with the number of German players on the squad either. If it was up to me the entire squad would be MLS players

To be honest, if our whole squad consisted of MLS players, we'd have no shot at all. Even our better full American players have spent time overseas.

No Pics sorry.
I went to play soccer today by Stanford and after headed over to the US team training camp. The training itself is closed to the public but I got to meet several players when they were arriving.
I did not meet Landon Donovan because he was already training when I got there. Donovan, Bradley, Omar Gonzalez and Rimando were the first out on the field and there before I arrived.
Tim Howard is not a cool dude. He didnt sign anyones stuff. Guzan and Bedoya who were walking with him were cool and signed peoples stuff. I shook their hands and wished them luck. Julian Green and Yedlin were arriving when I parked so i got to meet them and shake hands. Green is really short. Yedlins hair is not as bright in person LOL

When i was headed back to my car Bedoya, Dempsey and Edu were coming out of their minivan. I approached them and said "clint good luck is Brazil". Dempsey shook my hand and said "thank you fam we apprecaite it". The two other guys also said whats up and shook my hand. All three were down to earth. Whats funny is I told Dempsey I was also a sounders fan and Edu was like "aw man". I said part of my family was Guatemalan and so we rooted for Marco Pappa. They were probably thinking I was a fan cuz of Clint LOL Clint said " [Pappa] He is good peoples...we like having him on the team".

Anyway they were not practicing inside Stanford stadium. They were on the fields next to the stadium and the baseball/softball field by the aquatic center. i went around 3:30pm.

German born players on the US squad is nothing new. As a long time fan, I remember dating back to 90 when Thomas Dooley (German born) made the squad. He went on to be captain for the 98 squad.

The current additions are much more prolific of course but added a necessary element to the team that helped it to quality for the WC & also with the CONCACAF gold cup. 2013 also saw what has to be the best year of the USMNT.

The German born players along with Aron Johannsson are already more technically sound & better than any American players the US could've added. Quite frankly I think it was a vital step in the success of the program until we can build better youth player which it looks like Klinsmann & Ramos are doing.

Look how successfully Germany has use the immigrant population amongst it's footy ranks. They successfully groomed Turkish kids into their program like Ozil, Khedira, & Gundogan (even though he didn't make the WC squad due to being injured this year).

Then you have Albanians like Shkodran Mustafi, Polish born players like Podolski & Klose...

I like the inclusion & it's proven to have helped the US...

why? just curious why you feel that way
Allow me to elaborate and slightly alter my point. In my honest opinion, the entire team should be made up of guys born and raised in the US. At the very least they should have lived a significant time in the US if they werent born here (like 10 years for example). I dont like the idea of guys like Diskerrud (sp?) and Jermaine Jones who have lived very few years here and were not born here taking a roster spot from a domestic player.

And here is my thing about the German team integrating immigrants. Ozil (Gelsenkirchen), Gundogan (Gelsenkirchen) and Khedira (Stutgart) were all born and raised in Germany. Podolski and Klose lived in Germany for the majority of their lives. There is no reason we should be taking "leftover" players from the German squad and taking that roster spot from a domestic American. I'd also like to see more latino players on the US squad. Guys like Edgar Castillo and others should be on the team IMO.

Lastly, I dont like the idea of a German coach at the head of the US team. England, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Holland, Brazil, Argentina, Spain and Mexico all have coaches from their respective countries, why not us? Dont mean to sound like a redneck, but to me the American team should have American players and an American coach

To make a quick point before I leave for work. England did have Fabio Capello as their coach during the last cycle and he's with Russia now (unless that has changed and I'm not aware about it). American coaches and players in general are still behind. All those countries you listed are soccer countries through and through. JK being brought in is more than just being the coach of the USMNT. He's changing the whole structure of US Soccer, and he has been, we have seen results so far. I'm not sure an American coach could have done that. Maybe an American player that has played overseas could have offered something but they certainly don't have the knowledge or experience that JK or someone alike has. I would love to see an American coach running things but I can't think of anyone who is up to the task. If you can suggest any, please do.

I think people are rather thrown off when they find out Jones can't speak a lick of English. And I also think it puts pressure on the US to produce better players in a way, coaches as well. Of course you're not the only one who feels this way and I agree with a couple of your views. I would also like to see more Latino players in the squad.

Well said I agree.
Gulati once said in a Soccer America article that it was easier to identify players other countries had already identified than to search this huge country for players. He felt foreign clubs and colleges would be their primary scouting method. He said the US fed did not have the resources to search for players outside those realms. This leaves a ton of domestic players under the radar (non foreign and non collegiate).

I mean there has to be other Julian Greens out there. We can't just rely on Bayern Munich to identify them.

I disagree wholeheartedly.

The notion of this country being too big to scout players is laughable. It comes from a purely lazy & unorganized mentality. The biggest problem with growing talent in this country is a lack of people knowing what to do & how to run a program successfully.

I see it first hand every day with my 10 year old playing club/travel soccer here in Maryland.

US soccer started a new project back in 2010 working with Nike (they donated $50 mill) to help start the new initiative where they treated it almost like the Apollo space program.

We're starting to see the roots take shape, but there is still a lot more work to do.

Please don't believe the notion this country is too big. It's purely an uneducated POV.

Edit - Also, there is no American coach right now that can do what Klinsmann is doing right know nor the players as technically sound as the ones Klinsmann added that could help push the USMNT. Point blank, if we didn't have them we wouldn't be where we are right now & in the direction we're headed. This is the first positive step I've seen this country take since watching the program.

A big middle finger to anybody throwing shade at any of the German-Americans on the team.  There might be one exception but these guys are all the sons of AMERICAN SERVICEMEN.

As the son of an AMERICAN woman who spent eight years of her childhood in Frankfurt and Nuremburg and didn't even set foot on U.S. soil for the first time until she was well into her twenties, all because her father was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, I take exception.

Statements like the U.S. team should be comprised only of Americans who spent significant time here are ridiculous.  There are millions of American citizens around the world who have never, and likely will never, live within U.S. borders.

I'm not talking about being frustrated or impatient with the U.S. development system, I can understand that, but there's simply no room for unwelcoming attitudes towards individual American citizens for no other than reason than the culture or location they grew up in.

Lupe is now "Music Director" for the USMNT?
Er, ok. Not sure what that means...but at least it's not some horrible acoustic folk trio or something.

I bought both the replica and the on field version in the home and away and in a size medium and large of each (so 8 jerseys total) to try them out.  Im 6'1 and 182lbs.  I really wanted the on field kits but they were just way to small for me (even the large was too small).  The size large replica home kit fit me perfect so I kept that one and the medium was a little too small.  As for the medium and large away kit it was a toss up.  Either one probably would have worked but in the end I went with the large because the medium was a little tight.  I do however feel like the large is a tiny bit big.

On a side note I now have to purchase a new away kit since my original one is being framed.
