**Official USMNT Soccer Thread**

Is it wrong to be happy that green made it?  I know he hasn't proved anything but I hope he developes throughout this WC into 2018.  Although Landon could have easily snubbed his ticket.

Sad to say but Landon didn't have a place on this team.

If it's the 60th minute and I need an immediate impact sub off the bench at RM/RW to try and steal a result against Portugal/Germany I'm putting in Yedlin before Donovan 10/10.

Boyd is the guy I really feel for. He's playing out of his mind right now I really thought he was going.

I thought the roster was picked pragmatically. I like it.

I agree with you Ice... Landon's time has gone. Surprised with Boyd too.

Kinda surprised but not really about Evans. He played a pivotal role for Klinsmann during the qualifying at right back. The fact that he carried 6 right backs into camp kinda screamed his position wasn't locked on the roster.

The blue print for what Klinsmann did with the US roster existed during his time with the German national team back in 06 where he went with a predominantly young squad most of which was 22 & younger.

I like it though... Come hell or high-water this is what we got & mine as well throw balls to the wall in this group of death. :smokin

The Landon sabbatical was last spring. He came back and was our best player on the Gold Cup squad. He could definitely offer something as a sub.

And feel for Brad Evans. I believe he started every qualifier except our first game in Honduras where Chandler played terribly and we suffered 1 of our 2 losses.

I know I've been very critical of Omar since the beginning of 2013, but i find it had to believe he earned a spot given his inconsistent play for club & country. He's been shaky for the Galaxy recently from what I've seen & he was solely responsible for both goals El Tri scored last time out.

I realize Klinsmann is going with youth & trying to help develop Omar, but he's been bad at best in every aspect of playing centre back. What scares me is how careless he is with the ball & how ill at ease he seems with the ball at his feet sometimes.

He's sloppy play is going to be the death of us in our group... I wouldn't let him train my son's club team. :roll eyes

BTW, the US site has some gear on sale. For example the N98 USA tech jacket Klinsmann has been wearing lately is on sale for $134.99 (regularly $149.99). Check out the site to see if you can get a few couple of dollars off some new gear.

And man, Terrance Boyd.... Can't help but love the kid. Hopefully he continues to get better and develop a bigger role moving on after this summer

At first I was like:

If we're not gonna get past the group stage and it won't make a difference, why put Landon Donovan on the team?

But then I was like:

being drawn into the group of death has something to do with the decision. while the future is certainly now...getting that draw changes things slightly IMO. i'm one of those that don't think landon gives us a better shot of advancing at this point. might as well go with the younger squad. let the older (relatively speaking) guys who will be around in 2018 take on that leadership role.

i don't know. at the end of the day, i think that the only thing that sucks about this is that he doesn't really get a proper send off. that certainly is unfortunate.

Who cares about Donovan. Dudes get left off National Teams ay'day b.

Naw but forreal from the ESPN series it seems like he knew the writing was on the wall. Gotta put in the work and earn your keep no matter who you are..

So, Donovan didn't put in more work than Green?

For whatever reason, Jurgen and Donovan have never seen eye-to-eye and I don't think there's any more to it than Jurgen just not wanting Donovan on the team.

Wondo is 31, so age wasn't that big of a deal, Donovan has put in more work than Green, so it couldn't have been an "earn your spot" thing, and I think we can all agree Donovan would not be the worst on the current roster even at 32.

Anyone who can legitimately say "f donovan" right now is not a true USMNT fan. Even if he was in the worst shape and form of his life right now the guy has earned his stripes far and beyond most of that roster and he deserves 3 more games. I'd rather have his *** back in CB than ****** Omar Gonzalez (and I'm a big Galaxy fan).

You guys are telling me that if we were down 2-1 with 15 minutes to play in a world cup you wouldn't be excited LD was to come off the bench? Yeah right.

I still remember watching that game vs Mexico in 02 at 1 am rooting my *** off :smh: The Algeria game |I

Extremely disappointed it ended this way for the best player in US history. ****kkkk. He doesn't deserve to go out like this :smh: and everyt other ******* great moment in US Soccer for the last 12 years. Man this is such BS

For anyone who says Landon was in great shape while in camp... :rolleyes

He's had one too many tacos & a few too many Modelos (living in So Cal)... Maybe a lil too much In&Out too.

Shout out to NTer @LeaveMeGlazzies for the pic... Dat profile

Klinsmann made a pragmatic decision, the right one. It's time to move on & let the new guys make a name for themselves.

I'd be excited but thats based on past years, his current form isn't worthy of that excitement....he is NOT good in MLS right now, he is past his prime. Look the gu is arguably the best player ever to wear our shirt and one of the ones that got me into liking the sport but you can tell from his comments he was "off" like he had a lot of self doubt. We have the worst travel schedule in Brazil and he even said he struggles to train for several days in a row.... LD wasn't going to start anyways. I think he couldve been there as an experienced vet but if he had a sourpuss attitude about not playing that may not even be the best thing for the team. We have a TOUGH group...who knows maybe having young guys who don't necessarily know any better may work out for us. We got screwed with our group this go round but I'm still excited and hope we get through. Jurgen doesn't have that sentimental attachment to him and Germans are more practical and matter of fact than we are anyways, I just can't be too mad about the possibility of missing out on 15mins of LD in one game. Lets hope the youngins cook :pimp: LD will still go down as a pioneer of revitalizing the sport here in the States as he should be.

I know he's not in the greatest shape, I watch him play every weekend with LA and I still remember him pulling his shirt up in that Mexico friendly and having this big gut flap out. What I am saying is just having him in the 23, his presence, leadership, and experience, was worth taking up one of the 23 spots. There are always guys on the 23 man roster who get no playing time in world cups when its all said and done. I thought at worst Donovan deserved to be on the bench and not play. I mean we dragged along some other bums on our roster way past their expiration date.

Its like Zidane, Del Piero, and Figo in 06 (ages 34)

Cuahtemoc Blanco at 37 in 2010, hell even an injured Beckham almost went in 2010.

You need your veterans/legends sometimes for the part of the world cup that takes place OFF the field. Just my opinion though.

Yep I see where you're comin from with that....if it were any other coach he'd be in for sure..JK and him don't see eye to eye plus his current form etc. I guess my stance ultimately is: I would have personally had him on the team (for the reasons you mentioned) and initially was shocked and had to do a double take ; but I can understand the decision to leave him off in the end all things considered. Its def a ballsy thing to do though and this is def a transitional roster to 2018 too Maybe JK would rather go out with guys who will mostly be around in the next cycle so they get the experience of playing in a ridiculous group? We'll see...

Yup, to be honest though this is a good thing for 2018. It sets the standard now that you better stay in form the next 4 years and your "name" doesn't guarantee you a spot. What Landon did at the end of last year (taking time off) and coming in to camp overweight probably had a lot to do with this regardless of what shape he's in now. It's almost like LD thought he was guaranteed a spot and JK said "f you".

Scary thing is our Ghana match is like 23 days away. I am not comfortable with our team right now but excited to watch our friendlies to see what lineup JK puts out there.

I'm over it now.... I would've loved to see him and Beas one last time in a WC but he's not in JK's plans. JK has been spot on thus far in his decision making so you gotta let him cook.

Besides, maybe the young guys will be hungry and make a legit difference like Landon did back in 2002. He was young, excited to be there and hungry. Green, Yedlin and Mix could very easily do the same and surprise a lot of people.

The real question is now: Who should get dat number 10 shirt????

Twellman is so annoying.

Why is it so hard for people to fathom that the young players could have beaten out and out of shape, and out of form old guy based on their play?

It's unfair to the players who actually made the team to say JK left him off for personal reasons. By all accounts LD is a shell of his former self. So why can't anybody acknowledge the fact that these other players are better than him and he is not in fact one of the best 23 players?

Soccer Pro is offering free name sets on all US shirts this holiday weekend.

Shout out & thanks to all the vets in here!

now you're talking

agreed. as i said, it's a **** way for him to go out, but it's time for us all to cut the cord and move on. no one isn't grateful for what he did for US soccer.
