Tinker designed both shoes and they're both generally considered to be their best signature shoes. So I would assume that's where the inspiration comes from. Also Jordan considered by most as the best basketball player of all time and Fed has the most Grand Slams and many consider him the best also. (Not trying to start up a debate lol)

i remember they brought on tinker to design the vapor 9 because didn't like how the previous models looked which is true. Vapors were :x prior to the 9

He isnt, Nike came to him with the idea and he was hesitant. As you can assume he isnt the biggest basketball fan being from Switzerland.
Anyway he contacted a close friend of him and the guy convince him it was a no brainer.
Nike offered the first 14 Models and he choose the 3s cause of the cement print
