I mean following exactly what Marvel did sure isn't the way to get out of Marvels shadow.
They just got to make the best film they can and hope for the best. SDCC announcement of their upcoming films should help us understand how they are going to approach their universe. Remember they have 5-9 other DC based films in development.

AoU has already began filming. The script has to be set in stone by now.Maybe Wasp? After all Evangeline Lilly was not confirmed to be wasp. If there is a franchise they can take a lot of liberties with it is Ant-Man.

Penguins of Madagascar is now been pushed up to this thanksgiving and their new property is now pushed back. They couldn't take another box office bomb. The spinoff to their strongest franchise is coming out this year instead.

Because it's not making close to a billion like Despicable Me or Frozen means it's a box office bomb?
Budget on those are $150m or less for each film.

Their other films didnt do so well. I'm using the word bomb lightly because that is what the source I got it from called them. But not Madagascar. Im talking about Mr. Peabody and Sherman and I forgot what other movies, which still did over $250 million in the box office but since they only keep half that wasnt even breaking even
