Personally tomorrow for the first time in my life, I'm going to proudly celebrate the history
of my ancestors in taking pride of the events of May 5th 1862
and those proceedings.
Being of African descent sadly the celebration of May 5th is not exactly
embedded in schedule with the rest of the many "holiday" traditions if you say....
being the most of them are manifests of fabrication, have no meaning to us,
or truthly just aren't causes for celebration.
[Intriuged NT'er] Well what is Cinco De Mayo again? [Intrigued NT'er]
Cinco De Mayo signifies the victory of Mexico against the French at the battle of Puebla on May 5th 1862..
[Intrigued NT'er] Ehhh...Exactly MEXICO? [Intrigued NT'er]
Well actually this is important for Africans because France supported the confederacy in the Civil War, and had France been victorious at the battle of Puebla, they would have more than likely helped the south consolidate the institution of slavery.
[Intrigued NT'er] I mean but who got the job done? [Intrigued NT'er]
There were many instances of Africans fleeing slavery and finding shelter amoung the Mexicans in Mexico.
African people are even documented as having participated in the battle of Puebla and having helped secure the victory on the 5th of May. Therefore, this holiday should not be viewed as a holiday "exclusive" to the Mexican people alone.
This holiday is EQUALLY a time for Africans to celebrate. The victory of the Mexicans against the French was a victory for Africans fighting for their OWN freedom against the French as well.
"What happened to the Afro-Mexicans of Mexico," asked the traveler "for legend has it that the Afro-Mexicans were Black. What happened to them."
"Ah," sighed the old man "They lost their racial identity, so they died" (cf. Chancellor Williams)
