P.J. Carlesimo has an agreement in principle to join the Toronto Raptors as an assistant coach under Jay Triano, according to league sources.

Carlesimo last served as a head coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder but was replaced by Scott Brooks midway through the 2008-09 season.

Prior to that, Carlesimo served as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs under Gregg Poppovich.

Carlesimo spent this season working for the Spurs as a color commentator on their radio broadcasts.

Carlesimo has compiled a 204-296 record as a head coach having helmed the Portland Trail Blazers (1994-97) and Golden State Warriors (1997-2000) before taking over the Seattle SuperSonics in 2007 before their move to Oklahoma City.

An official announcement is expected later this week.

Ric Bucher is a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine.

Matt Barnes says he’ll opt out of his Orlando Magic contract

Matt Barnes will test the free-agent market this summer.

Barnes said minutes ago that he will not exercise his player option for the 2010-11 season, but he added that he hopes to return to the Orlando Magic.

“As for me and my contract situation, I’m going to opt out,

sucks that bass had to stay on the bench for a year.

Good move on Telfairs part to pick up the option... Even though he's not playing a lot there, it keeps him in the league & something could open up via trade or something to that affect.

This thread is going to be huge very soon...

I would like a guy like Barnes on our team.  Don't know what he's lookin for, but if we can afford him, I hope we take a look.

I think Luke Walton needs more time.

Yes hes horrible at times, but when he gets it going, he plays that triangle pretty well, IMO.

Knowing him and how many teams he's bounced around on, I'd guess at least a 4 year deal.  I think he should definitely stay in Orlando, but who knows if they're willing to commit long term money to him when they already have deals with Bass and Gortat who don't play that much.

I think I'd rather see Redick get resigned than Barnes.

Eh, if we don't get Barnes, I'm hoping for a Bynum for Bosh swap, and add Ray Allen for the mid level.  That's my offseason right there.

Re-sign whichever PG's already on the roster, Fish and Farmar if we can, hope that Brown stays, have our bench be Farmar, Allen, Brown, Odom, filler.

I assume Sasha would go with Bynum in a deal for Bosh if that happens.  He'll only have one year left on his deal, Bynum will have 2.

Big offseason obviously.  This thread is going to be ridiculous.

Carter is expected to remain with the Magic through next season, according to Smith. Carter, 33, fell short of being the go-to guy that many expected. "I think that Vince will tell you he'd like to have had a better season, but I'm not putting it on one guy. We failed as a unit," Smith said. Carter has an expiring contract next season at $17 million — salary-cap friendly for other teams in a trade. But Smith said he "anticipates" Carter staying the entire season. Asked about the prospect of being dealt, Carter told the Sentinel, "I'm not worried about that. I know how the business works. I think I can stand on my body of work." Orlando Sentinel
Team sources indicate that the Mavs' new No. 1 goal -- since they concede that an extension before July 1 is highly unlikely -- is securing a verbal commitment from their franchise player on the first day of free agency. A quick commitment from Nowitzki is crucial to the Mavs' hopes of convincing LeBron James or anyone else of prominence to press for a subsequent sign-and- trade to Dallas, since the opportunity to play with Nowitzki is the Mavericks' No. 1 selling point to prospective newcomers. "Dirk can opt out," one source said, "but the Mavs can already have basically agreed on a deal with him when he does." ESPN.com

While Wade has mentioned a meeting of the prime free agents, Boozer's invitation has yet to arrive. "I don't know how it's going to play out with phone conversations, text messages. Maybe we'll all go to the Bahamas and have a pow-wow," he said with a laugh. "I wouldn't be surprised if some of the superstars this summer that are free agents could be on the same team next season in an effort to try to win a championship." South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Adonal Foyle might retire. Foyle, 35, didn't play in a game this past season. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in October, and he hurt his left knee late in the season. "I'm going to take some time, the next two months, and really assess where I'm at and what I want to do and be honest with myself as to what I can do and what I can't do," Foyle said. "I've been always good at that. Then, I'll make a decision hopefully by August." Orlando Sentinel
J.J. Redick will be a restricted free agent this offseason, and on Monday, Redick continued to say he would prefer to re-sign with the Orlando Magic. He also indicated that his main goal isn't to go to a team where he would be a starter. In fact, Redick insisted that he would be happy to remain a bench player on a winning team. "Winning is the most important thing to me," Redick said. "I'd rather have this role on a winning team with a great organization and a great city than anything else. So, in my book, there's no substitute for winning." Orlando Sentinel

The Magic can match any other team's offer for Redick, a restricted free agent. Smith sounded like he didn't want to let him go. "Would we love to have J.J. back? Sure. We think he's a valuable piece," he said. Whether Redick will make substantially more than the $2.8 million he earned last season is doubtful. He seemingly would be content with a decent raise and a four- year deal from the Magic. Orlando Sentinel

Barnes reminds me of Raja Bell. A good defender who plays with passion. Knicks should have never let him and Ariza go.

would like to see amare stay with the suns. nash is getting old, but that boy dragic could play and be special in a couple yrs.

Should be a great off season...

I think Matt Barnes adds intensity and toughness to any team in the league. He seems to have pretty solid bball IQ and I think any team would like to have him.

I think JJ will get more money

If C's win the title, they have to re up Ray

"Jason Smith of ESPN Radio's "NBA Today" podcast reports that an NBA general manager told him the Heat offered Michael Beasley to the Nets for Keyon Dooling and "Rod Thorn turned them down". Smith described Thorn's decision as yet another indication of how badly the Heat want to get rid of Beasley.

However, a look at the two teams' salary structures show that it may be more about cap space. Beasley is scheduled to make $4,962,240 next season while Dooling is only owed a $500,000 buyout on his $3,828,000. The Nets have a team option on Dooling exercisable June 29. So taking on Beasley would have reduced the Nets' cap space by nearly $4.5 million. It would have made the Heat much more competitive in free agency this summer as well, giving them more than $25 million to spend...as well as Dwyane Wade.

I mean damn...

Is that how far Beasley has fallen? Who cares if you're NJ and you lose 4.5 million, Beasley could turn out to be a nice player if put in the right situation. The risk outweighs the reward, and you I don't see how New Jersey can turn that down seeing as how nothing's definite with free agents yet. What happens if they get screwed in FA? They'd be looking back on this deal. Don't count your chickens before they're hatched.

smart move by the nets right now, see what you do in the draft and to start off FA before you make that move

Getting traded for Keyon Dooling might have been enough to send him back to rehab.

Getting turned down for Keyon Dooling...

Mike there's a decent chance it won't be on the table after FA.

well, damn.  Makes me wonder if D.Wade made it clear that if he's going to return, Beasley had to be off the roster.....

i would love to see Barnes in a Jazz uniform. Doubt it will happen, Utah has no money this year.
