🦉The Official Drake Thread6️⃣ - Scary Hours 3 11.17.23

Haven't read through the last few pages so this may have been already answered, but was there an explanation as to why Popcorn was left of Controlla? And where are all there versions with him on it? Can't seem to find it anywhere.

Honestly theres more people who dislike Drake that do in here. Album is solid. Needs more listens for a full review.

I came into this album with little to no expectations and the sole desire for him to switch the flows up more and move past this stagnant stage where he, for the most part, was making better versions of songs that anyone could make (in my opinion.)

Based on two listens, he could still stand to get back into a more creative pocket flow-wise, but it at least felt like he wasn't yelling at me as much. I'm happy with the effort put into switching things up a bit sonically and melodically though. I can see why people drew parallels to the kind of music he would've made in maybe 2009-2011.

It's odd that he decided to do 20 songs after he and 40 already talked about paying more attention to concision on the last album, but it held my attention throughout the duration well, and I don't really see myself skipping much besides maybe "Pop Style" and "Hotline Bling", and the latter is just because it's been burnt out for me by now.

Lyrically I give him a B- to B overall. Melodically I give him maybe a B+ overall. I really like the album. I might revisit the others this upcoming week to see where I stack everything now.

this the r and b half of the double album the rap part going to drop before the tour hopefully so yall can be satisfied

Relistened to this album again, went up from 5/10 to 6/10. Meh.
IYRTITL was Quentin Miller's magnum opus, I mean Drake's.

Gordonson pretty much summed it up.

It *could* stand to lose about 12 minutes, to me. But I don't see any wholesale cuts to make. Every song has something I'm into.

I actually kind of look forward to him getting older, dropping the bravado of youth and making better "art." Because I think it's in him to do. He seems too comfortable, at the moment, but still feels the need to solidify that he's "the best under 35." It makes sense on the heels of the Meek thing, but I'm looking forward to him making a more polarizing, artistic, album.

That said, I think he's the best version of who he is, right now, on this. I don't avoid sadness or emotion, so all that is a positive to me. It's substance in a way that isn't typical to the superstars. And his ability to weave in and out of talking cash sh-- and being worried/vulnerable is what makes him the most relatable rap superstar we've had.

The album definitely has its flaws and doesn't stand up to the genre's classic, but I don't think the flaws are as glaring as his other albums and I don't know that the music he makes will ever be able to stand up to what we deem as consensus classic rap albums. He just doesn't make those. He also doesn't seem to chase those.

I think we'll look back at a greatest hits album from him and be amazed that he was able to make so many dope *** songs, even if you can't point to *that* album.

Thank you, drugs.

Forgot to mention that the production is easily an A for me. Tracks like "9" straight up sound like audio victory laps.

Great post, and I agree with damn near all of it. Especially with the part about looking forward to him finally being past this stage of feeling like he needs to emphasize the fact that he's the "youngest ___ running it" every time. We get it

I want him to take more risks.

I also want him to figure this **** out with the Popcaan feature on "Controlla" (make it a remix or something) and get that out there in a way that benefits the Unruly Boss.

Isn't Drake almost 30? Nas is only 42 and he astounded the rap game at the age of 19 (Illmatic)
I know he was 20-21 when it was released but the album was recorded between 1992 and 1993
