🦉The Official Drake Thread6️⃣ - Scary Hours 3 11.17.23

Or the problem is you don't like the idea of that potentially being a "negative" thing on Drake's record, so you insinuate that "everyone" else does it too.

As if we're having this same conversation about "everyone else" based on TANGIBLE evidence out there for everybody to see.

If this was something everyone does...then why are talking about this? Why is it news when another reference track hits the web? Why has Kendrick and Push taken shots at "rappers" having writers if they too also do it?

The very topic of "ghostwriting" in Hip Hop has ALWAYS been taboo. Stop acting like it's commonplace and that it's well known that "everybody" does it. That's a lie.
Taboo to some extent ... But to say that is a no no?

Kanye = very successful
Dre = Very succesful
Snoop = very successful

Stop it fam ....

If we want to even go there....

Rap hip hop is not Future Deigner Migos OG G. And this bunch of garbage we hear in the radio ... Not even one like of real hip hop is spew on them verses ....

Come on man, he really laughed at the notion that artist make reference records for themselves, a practice done all the time.

An artist may lay a reference track that has nothing but mumbles and a few lines, just to get the skeleton down. Another writer could use that skeleton to fill it in a bit, and wallah. You have two reference tracks.

Happens all of the time. But when it comes to Drake, people don't even acknowledge this possibility

Drake stans be getting stressed about the ghostwriting ****. Always tryna deflect from what's been proven.

As far as big names rappers we know have had writers
Eazy E
Dre
Diddy
Kanye
Drake

And 4 of those dudes never tried to hide it. They didn't have to get exposed. So anybody else ya'll throw out is just talk to cape for your man.

Rappers do make reference for themselves.

Having somebody else make it, then you come in copy it does not happen all the time.

Rihanna’s not just going to spend an entire day in the studio with someone coming up with a song from scratch, unless that person’s a real super-superstar songwriter. Pharrell might call Rihanna (or vice-versa) and say, “Hey, come over to the studio and we’ll see what happens,” but for everyone else, it’s pretty much reference track or die. Even genius songwriters might need to write 50 songs, 100 songs, 1,000 songs, until they come up with that one big single. Rihanna’s not about to sit around for days waiting for that one-in-a-thousand song. It makes much more sense for a songwriter to just send her the great song when they come up with it. That's why Drake has Majiid Jordan sleeping in his studio. He wasn't wasting his time sitting with around with them, he was like "When you come up with something great record a reference track and I'll take a listen."

And the original songwriter may never get in the studio with the artist at all.  Again, it’s about clout. Pharell might be able to say, “This song’s not getting released unless I get in the studio and I approve it.” But if you’re a young songwriter, you have a friend of a friend of a friend who somehow gets Rihanna a reference track, she likes it and records it but doesn't particularly give a **** about further input from you, what are you going to say? No, you can't use the song?

Another question then…How often does this happen? Seems like a lot.

Nathanslavik [1:25 PM]
It happens...constantly. Songwriters make reference tracks like chef's make plates of food. I should stress, though, we’re really talking almost solely about pop/R&B songs here where this kind of songwriting is the standard. For hip-hop songs you rarely have a reference track for anything but maybe a melody and a hook because there’s a premium on writing your own lyrics. So it’s far less common for a hip-hop artists to use reference tracks (with some notable exceptions cough cough).
But hey...what do they know.

Rappers make reference tracks for themselves...and reference tracks are common place in rap. Got it.

Yeah I'm done here. I'm a stan because i'm applying common sense to the conversation.

Drake has reference tracks. Reference Tracks = "Ghostwriting" or whatever to y'all
laugh.gif

Kendrick don't got no reference tracks. Cole don't got no reference tracks. Pac didn't have any reference tracks. Hov don't have any reference tracks. Drake the only one getting help. They writing all these verses, hooks, and songs, by themselves. Y'all got it.

Y'all have a nice day. It was fun chopping it up with y'all. (srs)

Who said it was a "no no"?

It is CLEARLY something that is not COMMONPLACE in rap. ****** used to get DISSED for it. It was considered a black mark to not write your raps.

What are you 15? You can't possibly sit up here and tell me this is something that happens with everyone. I never argued that people who have writers aren't successful so what the hell are you talking about?

Well, in the hip-hop world there’s a very real stigma against not writing your own lyrics, so hip-hop reference tracks, if and when they exist, are understandably kept on the down low. Again, Drake.

Pop and R&B artists don’t feel the same need to hide that they use songwriters. I don’t think anyone was operating under the delusion that Rihanna wrote all her own stuff, but still, what’s the upside of the public hearing a reference track for an artist? Better to let people assume their favorite songs were created in some magical late studio session than expose the machinery. “Well, he had his cousin email my manager a reference track and my manager thought it could be a hit, so I recorded it. No, I’ve never actually met him.” That’s not exactly going to go down as a great moment in music history.
Everyone does it

I don't think anyone cares about hooks or bridges and you know that. But can you let me know which VERSE was written for Kendrick, Cole and HOV?

You think that dead presidents reference track will ever leak?

this ain't street battling this is diluted commercial rap/hip hop ..

We aren't talking about Bumpy Knuckles Big L Killah Priest etc . .

Stop it, you playing yourself ...

Look at how Guilli the Kid wrote for Lil wayne and no one cares.

We don't care B ...

Which verses in particular? I can't. I don't know.

But like...if you think Hov, Kendrick, and Cole wrote EVERY SINGLE VERSE they've ever rapped, by themselves, then like...I don't know what to tell you

Rap is the music business. It isn't a fairytale. Like, if you really believe that they've written everything by themselves for their entire careers thus far, then like, it is what it is.

That's pretty naive to me, and like i've mentioned in the thread I've heard first hand about kendrick and Cole, I mean people write together. It happens. If you believe these rappers only write their raps by themselves then so be it.

You moving them goal posts like a ************.

If you really don't care...you or anyone else saying that wouldn't have come up with a bunch of rebuttals. You would have just said..."Drake has writers and I don't care" from the jump.

But you didn't. You ****** just sat here and came up with 10 different rebuttals.

please pay attention to the interview ... He started by saying that they Stic and Him just collaborated .. He went on to books talking implying that because thebdidnt write their story is it Ghost writting? And then when he was ask if they write for NAS .. His answer was clear ... Not Me! No mention of Stic like he started the conversation.
He not about to speak for someone else.  Which he shouldn't,  only speak on yourself...

Chorus, hooks, bridges and even song structure yea I'll agree. Actual full hardcore rap verses Quentin Miller style, NO.

moving? Stating facts... This **** came out last year and is the only thing that keeps resurfacing when dudes get upset at Drake ... Like please ...

Then you said this is Taboo ... Well I'm the underground relm, yes I can see why.

Commercially no ... People do it ...

What am I suppose to do .. I don't care and keep quiet when you say a bunch of utterly wrong statements? Please ....

Stop acting like you are the one 15 y/o.

Even on the QM ****, he didn't write an entire record for Drake. Just verses. QM himself said when he came aboard for the mixtape, the tape was largely finished. That part gets omitted with QM too. Also, the QM reference records don't automatically mean Drake wasn't writing his raps and I explained why that is the case a few pages ago. That's not how reference records work.

But to your point, yes, full on verses man. Like I said, this **** isn't a fairytale. If you believe Drake the only popping rapper right now taking full verses from writers then I don't know what to tell you. It happens man.

Am I'm lost or did he not only answered for himself when asked.
SMH ... They is him? Ok .. Moving on.

BTW you do know there are two members of Dead Pre z .. Him and Stic ... And Stic is the one that has been linked to writing for NAS. Ok

They don't not have a team of dudes writing, making reference tracks for them, writing features. That's what Drake has.

Don't see why ya'll keep tryna defend this. It is what it is at this point.

I know for a fact that they do. Y'all really that naive to think Drake is the only one practicing this, that's crazy
laugh.gif

Y'all keep bringing up reference tracks which is crazy too. Reference tracks without context could mean a myriad of things, but again if you don't know how reference tracks work then I don't know what to tell you
