There are several different kinds of acronyms, not all spell a word. See: NAACP, NCAA, CBS, ABC etc.

No, technically he's right. All acronyms are initialisms, but not all initialisms are acronyms. NAACP, NCAA, CBS and ABC are not acronyms because they can not be pronounced as a single word.

Looking into it further, there seems to be differing opinions between dictionaries and such as to whether or not an acronym has to be a pronounceable "word" such as NATO or POTS.
I suppose agreeing to disagree is the thing to do since from what I'm reading, there's no universal standard as to what the answer is.
