They're wasteful because of the resources it would take to build and power them. 300 foot mech suits require tons of metal and nuclear reactions for each of them. As we saw in pacific rim, those resources run out and it gets too expensive to make.

Tony stark makes iron man suits on a whim which each pack enough firepower to take on a small army. Would you rather have 300 iron man suits or 5 gundams
