Lately, Nike has been coming out with overly flexible shoes that cause Plantar fasciitis. Why?

Gotta remember that Prof K article came out 7 years ago. Not saying he would rip Nike now, since he works for them, but at the time that was very eye-opening. Killed Reebok Basketball with the Internet/Sneakerhead crowd. Wish someone would grow the n---uts to rip Nike like that for all of these Lightweight Flywire dogs.

It seems that this Professor K was simply kissing swoosh in order to get whatever job he has with Nike. There are a few others here that work for Nike, those who will come out of woodwork if you say anything bad about the swoosh, then try and have you banned. It's a ploy, then a scam. Anyone who is really into quality footwear, isn't willingly going to play in a Nike shoe these days without being urged through hype. Funny as to how players who leave Nike for other companies, are suddenly regarded in negative terms around here as well. The product they now endorse will be derided as inferior, while Nike is now making shoes out of 64 oz bottles. I look at those Kobe threads, just shaking my head. I even had one guy say to me that no matter who Kobe forces to have sex with him, that he'd still support him and the product that he endorses.

Sad.

The price of Carbon Fibre did rise quite sharply about 4 -5 years ago.

But I don't think Nike have used PURE Carbon Fibre shank plates much, if at all.

Most of those weaved plates have involved a certain amount of Kevlar so there's some some amount of flexibility.

That said, a TPU shank plate will probably suffice in most cases (see the XIV)

.....but it's simply cheaper to make a small plate, then make it visible through the outsole, than make a full plate, one which is visible through the side of the shoe as well.

It also gives the illusion that the plate is more deeply embedded in the shoe somehow, creating the misconception of extra support.

A small plate with a weaved finish, or a sticker with a weaved finish, also looks more 'techy'* than a TPU plate, even though the TPU plate may perform just as well.

I really don't think a big piece of carbon fiber is going to prevent plantar fasciitis. Did you ever see a running shoe with carbon fiber? I had more problems with shoes made with big pieces of carbon making the shoe extremely rigid. Maybe for a big powerful guy, but not for a smaller guard. Look at some of the all time great shoes like the Jet Flights, Ultraflights, or more recently, the BB1's. The BB's don't even have a piece of plastic and nobody is complaining about them. Nike always goes towards a certain tech. for a few years. They pushed the carbon spring plates for a while, and monkey claws, double zoom, and whatever else.

Now, I do agree that is seems like they are cutting costs by eliminating full length zoom etc, which is disappointing. Although, maybe they are trying new foam materials from the running shoe line like cushlon which is very soft. My feet happen to be spoiled by full length zoom, and don't like the idea of only having forefoot zoom in a shoe like the Fuse's or KD's, but I haven't tried them yet either. Maybe the heel material is soft enough, but I would prefer to at least have a little zoom bag back there.

As a guy who has had PF or turf toe, I have always found the stiffer the shoe the worse my foot/toe felt. I run in the free 5.0's and habe no issues....when I wear my KB V's i get a hint of PF. I switch shoes all the time and found a pair of bluechips II gave me little to no issues where some high-end shoes would give me issues.

As for the Pistons trainer banning the Hyperflight's....you are not correct. He banned them for guys hurting their ankles...which makes no sense since they (players) should be getting them taped.

Having your ankles "taped" does not prevent you from ankle eversion, nor inversion, neither does wearing high, low or midcut shoes either. However, wearing a flimsy shoe that does not mold to the foot, then holding it in place inside the shoe, coupled with an iffy cushioning system, will most definitely contribute to injuries of both the foot AND ankle.

Don't worry, I am sure that after what I've said about Nike, someone will scream it out, behaving only as a female dog can.

He's that one broad that called himself Mr Jack Johnson, coach Hubbie, chocolate fairy, and some other banned screen names... I think we all know what this broad is about... He self proclaimed himself as a big black business man... All his screen names/avys/ and old posts have been racial in a subliminal way.... One of those lame NTers that bash anything new that Nike comes out with. He has Adidas tatted on his lower back...

^you are a hypocrite though coach hubie. i mean i dig some of the stuff you say that is non shoe related but when it comes to athletes and shoes you come off as a hypocrite.

Michael Jordan was a horrible person probably even worse than Kobe Bryant yet you hold him in high standards.

Also you crucified kobe for getting accused of rape by a white female and then it came out what this white female was all about yet it seems like you still are taking her side on this issue even though the black athlete has been held under a microscope ever since Jack Johnson took the white man's belt...

also back then prof K praised adidas footwear so i doubt he was a nike fan boy back then.

times ahve changed and solecollectorr is now on nike/jordan's payroll but back then i really dont think a case could be made he was biased.

this whole nike causes planter fasciitis is bull %#@%. i bet nike endorsed athletes arent the only ones getting this...

There are a few other Nike lines out there that have this same ideology. The top of the line stuff is really not all that great. I guess the give away is the price, as it's many times $15-25 cheaper than a true signature model. All I hear now is "this foam is flexible." How can a technology that is almost 30 years old be better than a shoe that has some sort of airbag for cushioning.. They are going backwards, yet are pushing this stuff as top of the line.. I don't get it.

Zoom in one place is better than it everwhere? How about the fact the foam will lose its bounce and cushioning faster, ALONE, than it would if it had an airbag to aid in the cushion? They just want you to buy more of a cheaper product.. If I buy 4 $80 dollar shoes, it is much better than buying 2 of a $120 dollar pair, from Nike's perspective.

I can name zero current cross training shoes with a forefoot cushion. All of them are going with a one airbag approach, similar to the late 1980 shoes. It's a strange lull that we are in right now. "Flexible" foam is the new zoom air, and 95% of all shoes have the one airbag approach.. You know who else had a one airbag approach? The 2nd and 3rd tier products in the early 90s.

The true exception out of all of this are the kobes and a few running shoes. everything else is on this experimentation phase of using more and more foam than ever before.

Not every shoe will fit you. People are just dumb and don't know how their body work or what type of shoe is the right fit for them. You need to know whether you have flat, medium or high arch feet. Your weight and your playing style etc. OP probably have flat foot so his feet bend different compare to people with medium and high arch feet.

Wally, I see exactly what you are saying and have thought about the "new" flexibility for a couple years. I understand in running, flexion and strengthening the foot to make you faster, stronger, whatever. But in basketball, all we heard was stiff carbon fiber for support, blah, blah. So every sneakerhead/basketball player wanted carbon fiber plates because Jordan had them. Now, we have to have flex like Free's to promote responsiveness ans quickness. Like you said, If they can sell us on $80 for lesser, and hype them up, they are good. Which, in a business sense, they should be. Personally, I like Zoom forefoot and Max heel, don't really care about the carbon fiber as long as the shoe doesn't twist on me like the Hyperize's. I played in enough shoes in the 90's to know you don't need it to prevent PF.

The last time I got PF, it was from jumping on a trampoline. The downward bounce flexed my foot upward at the toes and I wasn't used to the motion. And I kind of knew who Nat Turner was about a month ago, but he has not been confrontational and is actually trying, it seems, to hold civil discussions with everyone, even me, who had an extremely volatile situation about race with him last time. Give him a chance and see how it works out. He might have some ideas or opinions we haven't thought of, even if he does have a trefoil tattoo on his ankle.
