A good friend and I got into an argument in the car yesterday that was so heated that we missed our exit off the freeway

We were arguing about indian mascots. He is a sportswriter for our local paper who is planning on putting out a column defending the use of indian mascots.

I tried to tell him how this is not fair at all... how rich white men are making huge money off of these logos while the actual descendants of the chieftains are stuck on the worst land in the country, slowly dying from addictions to drugs, alcohol, gambling, and crippling depression. I also brought up the ridiculous cariacatures (sp) of logos like the Cleveland Indians, where the mascot is seen as cartoonish and happy, with a bright red face. Seriously? How many indians are smiling right now?

I explained how indians were basically at one point victims of extermination attempts, for example the slaying of buffalos and the trail of tears. They have been backstabbed countless times in treaties and are now relegated to the worst land we could give them. I have a friend from Crow Creek Reservation in South Dakota... they are living in one of the poorest counties in America, with 78% of the population living below the poverty line. IMO I think it's very important that we begin to take steps towards respecting these people that have been so terribly disrespected. No, removing these mascots won't magically make things better, but it's a step in the right direction.

My friend was saying how no one complains about the Yankees name, or Spartans or Fighting Irish although they also have ethnic origin names. I replied that they weren't persecuted to even near the level that indians were. He also said that if there was a team called the Polacks (he's polish) that he wouldn't care ...

well, man, you're not black or jewish or indian or any other race that has suffered, so you don't really know what it's like. Also, you wouldn't call a team the negroes or the spics, because they're offensive. You wouldn't call an indian, "hey *******," yet there is a team named after that term.

My college changed their nickname from the Redmen to the Cardinals in 1988 after being contacted by a Indian rights group. I think this is great, and I'm glad they did it. A lot of area high schools are also changing their names to comply.

What do you think, NT? Is it unjust to have a team named the Indians, Chiefs, Seminoles, ********, Aztecs? Or is it not that big of a deal? I am honestly wondering what your thoughts are.

I can understand why people are offended. Indians is just furthering one of the biggest misnomers in American history. Native Americans are not Indians. The ******** is an offensive name, from what i am told from native Americans, because it refers to the scalp that colonists would take when they killed the native Americans.

But should they change the name ******** or Indians? I think they probably should.

Good post. I agree with everything you said and your friend is a moron especially if he hasn't even been to an Indian reservation and see the desolation first hand.

I hope so, but it will be hard... think of all the merchandise, jerseys, hats, basically anywhere where their logo/mascot name is placed, they have to change it. Tons of money lost.
It's easier for colleges and very easy for high schools to change. These all need to happen. Pro teams? I mean, I hope so... but it will be a struggle.

It's disrespectful, but what's new in the red, white and blue?
Imagine the situation being reversed and caucasians being the ones on reservations and having to look at this...

I def agree with you.  I can see why the major sports teams don't want to do it.

Spoiler [+]
dan snyder should get all the haneysworth money back and could easily handle all the losses he would take changing the name

They need to be changed. Even in Canada, we have the Edmonton Eskimoes that occassionally get protested.

Also, that Whities fitted is actually pretty ill.

I agree with you man 100% man, although the Indians mascot is the one I find most offensive, or would be most offended by if I were a native American.
