How did you go about doing that?
My plan was to just order it off contract (not the SG3). I'm waiting to see if there's going to be a phone like the note on VZW

I was up for an upgrade, so I decided to do it before VZW rolled out the shared data plans.
The SA said I was grandfathered because it is the date of the upgrade and phone purchase that qualifies you for it, not when you receive the phone.

I too hate screen protectors.  However, paying $600 + off contract w/ no insurance pretty much necessitates a case.  After dropping my SGS II right on the corner (only about 2 feet) I got three long hairline cracks at a diagonal.  This is my first cop w/out subsidy so I gotta play it safe.  I figure I'll go naked at home and case it up anytime I leave the house.

screen protectors aren't gonna protect your screen from a drop though.  i've tried a bunch of different screen protectors (zagg, bestskinsever, phantom) because i was paranoid about scratches to the screen.  one day, i just said "eff it" and ripped off the protector i had on at the time because it was too grippy and had a weird refraction that distorted the display slightly.  screen still looks new a year later (minus very tiny, almost unnoticeable blemishes).  i have the original SGS (t-mo vibrant) if that matters.
Hence why I said a "case"

Three key points to me:

1. They didn't release a "major" update because it wasn't really needed, especially 8 months after announcing 4.0.  Most of the issues people still have w/ Android are due to either sucky hardware or the infamous "lag" which is what they addressed with "Project Butter".

2. I really don't understand why people get upset about the whole "fragmentation" debate.  Google does deserve some of the blame for not taking a stand with carriers/manufacturers earlier on but it's not Google's responsibility to ensure every phone running Android is automatically updated to the newest OS.  As long as manufacturers are allowed to skin devices, there will be a delay between announcement and update.  And even at that point, the carrier still has it's hand in the process just as much (Sprint has had testing on ICS for FIVE months now).  It almost sounds like people want to say "Hey, y'all don't innovate and advance the ecosystem because everybody hasn't caught up yet."

3. We who post on message boards and tech sites are NOT the average Joe.  Go out in any public place and find 10 people with an Android device and ask them what version they're running.  Minimum 9 ain't gonna know what they hell you're talking about.  Average Joe/Jane just wants a phone they can text easily w/, get on FB, tweet all damn day and take good pictures with.  That's no different than asking an iDevice user how much RAM or ppi their device has.  Most people don't give a damn about updates; it's not a big deal to the average customer.

Deciding which one to get for ATT, S3 or Nexus? Is there a big difference in AT&T's LTE and HSPA+ network? I live in the DC area BTW which apparently has LTE coverage.

Wait, were you on 4G already? Cause they told me if I updated from my Droid X to a 4G phone that I'd lose my unlimited data.

Just picked up an S3 and I also live in the DC metro area and work downtown NW, LTE is LEGIT

(it's like walking FIOS

) plus the whole DMV is pretty much covered at this point and will only get better. I still get bounced to HSPA+ here and there but that's still fast enough too.

no expandable memory? That's kind of a big deal for me. I'd love to drop a 64 gb microSD card in there.

Nah man, I was on 3G.
I upgraded from a Droid X to  SG3 and my brother upgraded from a Droid 2 to a Droid Razr Maxx

Seriously I don't understand what's the big deal about SD slot. Nice to have but with 16gigs you should be good. I mean 720p rips are like a gig, 15-16 movies is more than enough plus u watching it on a 7" screen. I'm probably gonna scoop one up in the coming months.

Well damn. May have to jump on this too before the shared plans kick in.
