It was only a few years back when phones were giving 8-color 320x240 pictures. So I consider all of this new stuff pretty nice. And all of it is still poor compared to an SLR or 4/3.

let me get this right, ur saying a company is telling me i dont need technology thats better than what was available a few years ago? and what thriving company would say such foolishness? Youre ok with a company telling you "what you had in 2009 is good enough"? Cuz im not. I dont need a company treating me like im a spoiled child. I just wont buy from them. I'm spending 500+ on a phone in 2014 for 2009 technology? you can have that all to yourself my man.
Ill tell you what i dont think is an accident. Both the HTC One m8 Mini AND the HTC One Plastic Edition have 13mp cameras... now why is that? Why would they change the cameras on the newest editions of the m8? hmmmm

Of course its not an accident. Its an expected and reasonable response to the manufacturing and production issues that the earlier models were plagued with. Why would they continue producing something prone to failure, even if the flawless product is good?

Lemme spell this out for you. Companys have X amount of dollars to build a phone. This is called their budget.... By using less of that budget to make marginal increases n MP and throwin on a 10-15 mp cam they were able to...

Offer a 6 month free screen replacement
These are HTC exclusives that no other androids offer...
Do you get it yet? To compete with the big boys you hafta make a name for yourself. Theu dont have the budget of Samsung. So why make a mid tier cam? They were never gunna get you pixel junkies money anyway. They made a bare bones cam for a reaon people. And for me and the masses it works.... Look at sales
Why does LG struggle? They try to keep up with the jones without the budget to do so. HTC decided it was pointless to make a mid level cam withput ois jus to blend in with the comp. So they took the L and said its really not worth it. Pic quality is fine.

Terrible cameras? No. The Nokia 5101 has a TERRIBLE camera. The HTC Radar has a TERRIBLE camera. My girlfriend's Toshiba Satellite has a TERRIBLE camera.
The Nexus 5 camera isn't great or even good, but it is decent. You can point the phone at an object, snap a picture, and you will be able to see what the object is without squinting your eyes or making professional edits. I have a Nexus 5 that I use every day, take pics all the time, and aside from occasionally having to retake an out of focus picture, I've had absolutely no issue.
NTers can't just be cool with saying something is average. It has to be terrible.

You talking about N4 or N5 camera? HdR on N5 takes some pretty crisp pics. Camera aint as good as iphone obviously but its solid enough for any casual user. I'm not trying to take pics for National Geographic so it's good enough for me.

HTC has taken a loss nearly EVERY quarter of the last 2 years... look at sales.
and im sorry i mislead you. only the htc one e8 is the plastic one. the one mini is still metal. so no... being plastic is not the reason they switched to a 13mp cam. And that thought process didnt make sense to begin with, you're suggesting HTC didnt have the budget for a better camera by saving money using CHEAPER materials? so theyre scimping on the camera because theyre saving money using plastic instead of metal?
and btw that 6 month screen replacement came out this year...LITERALLY an entire year after the phone was released. put that little tidbit back in your pocket.

For the record HTC does take a loss jus like EVERY other android company besides samsung. The difference is their marketshare is growing so that someday soon the mobile division willbe profitable. Its a two horse race hit their best of the rest.... Easilyy

Costing is my background. Trust me I understand.
But I am talking about a finished product. The camera is buns on the phone and it is unfortunate. There are definitely some trade-offs happening though.

their budget for the htc m7 and m8 INCLUDES the ridiculous amount of money they poured down the drain for R&D of ultrapixels. they didnt choose ultrapixels because their budget limited them to it. They thought they were being innovative and choosing the tech of the future. it didnt work out. so to say budget is the reason they wont upgrade the camera is a loose point. they could stop putting out that bottom of the barrel camera which is and has been KNOWN to be the biggest (only legitimate) complaint for the past 2 iterations, and put in a typical 13mp camera. itd cut back r&d, and boost sales by a significant amount. i dunno bout you, but if I put out a product and my customers all complained about one particular aspect of it...id remove or change that one aspect. I wouldnt release the next generation of the product with the same thing people complained about. htc is just stupid like that. and people who support those kinds of decisions, like you, enable them to make stupid decisions like that.
that camera is buns. seedless buns. no excuse to not put an AVERAGE 13mp camera on the phone. no excuse! theyre shooting themselves in the foot...AGAIN. between the camera and their absolutely terrible marketing campaign (bla bla, bla bla bla) they just dont wanna be the best. simple as that.
