Can any E9x 335i owners hit me with a list of cons you have experienced while owning the car?

also some known problems that the cars have.

thanks!

Summary:

I've had mine for almost a year now. Only major issue I had was self inflicted (poor driving choices) :smh:

Bought it with 65k on the dash, 80k now. I had a thermostat failure code throw within 2 months of ownership, it went away while driving and never came back.

Last month it overheated and I assumed it was the water pump because of that previous code. I posted about it in here complaining about how much BMW sucks at cooling systems

Turns out it was just a hose that broke to my radiator. Had it fixed for less than $100.

Cons:

- filling up with premium in car that is this fun to drive can suck at times

- fuel pump problems are the norm, BMW will replace it under warranty up to 80k miles if Im not mistaken

- as stated earlier, water pumps can be an issue as well. If it fails its $400 just for the pump, so if you don't DIY you're looking at $800 at least in the shop

- while a great performing suspension platform, it can feel like you're driving an old civic on bumpy roads.

- no factory option to stream music via bluetooth to the stereo on earlier models

You didn't ask for pros but I'll give them:

- underrated power

- if you get 6 speed, that gearbox is straight butter compared to E36/E46. Hill assist is also :smokin

- the power delivery is straight up intoxicating. It feels like the powerband is through the entire rpm range

- no noticeable turbo lag

- da yambs love it :pimp:
thanks bro.  Have you done any mods to the engine?

To add a little my brother has an 08 that he bought with maybe 70k and is at about 100k now.

Take this with a grain of salt because i swear up and down he bought a horrible car. Should have looked around some more and got a PPI.

He has had a number of small issues but him taking it to the dealer because of the warranty has made them 10 time worse. If you go to a dealer make sure you know someone there or have a great review because these cars are not simple to work on and if they are not paying attention they will mess your car up.

First problem was the A/C compressor went bad and they "accidentally" replaced it with an 328i compressor. We didn't even know until we took it to get a carbon cleaning and the guy saw and mentioned it to us.

The Final straw I dont even know what he went in for i think it was an oil change but they didn't properly close the coolant res. Needless to say huge ******* mess.

He now has two independent shops that he goes to because the dealerships around us are incompetent.

Other than the small issues the car is great. It pulls really hard and I was actually going to get a 135i after i drove his car for the first time.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as the title is clean, no frame damage, and you cant tell in person that any work was done to it.

I had a brand new Altima back in 08 that got hit in the school parking lot and had 3k worth of damage done to it and it looked brand new when it came back from the shop.

Id rather a car have small body work done to it then be a car from up north that's rusted to hell.

This. I'd be more worried about how much damage $$$ wise was done, rather than where the accident was, although it would be nice to know that too. Body work and parts add up quick, anything under 3 grand is usually a pretty minor accident, and would be nothing to worry about.

i dont own an 09 so i cant speak from experience but i know you'll find a bunch of info on google/bmw fourms

i drove my cousins auto plenty times tho pushed it really hard too and the ****** honestly isnt bad it isnt super fast but it isnt slow or lame
to any car guy i guess an auto would be lame unless its DCT or some ****
laugh.gif
you gotta drive one for yourself tho its not clunky or anything it feels really smooth and the shifts feel like shifts
the auto can still kind of slide it if thats your thing powerslides are fun
laugh.gif
it wont over rev either it'll shift for you once you reach redline even if you're in manual mode havent tried launching an auto yet so idk about that

appreciate it guys.

Here's another question for you guys, and any BMW owner for that matter.  Is the yearly maintenance/repair cost just to keep these cars on the road really as bad as people make it out to be, or is it people just exaggerating the reputation that they have?  I've only owned Honda/Acura/Mitsubishi so i really don't know what it's going to be like.

Someone recently told me "if you don't have enough money to buy 2 BMW's, you don't have enough money for one"

I owned a 2004 M3 with 56k miles on it that had the transmission go out and was 9000 to replace the pump and trans. I only had it for a year and immediately sold it after fixing it because it was a ticking timebomb.

On the contrary, my 2009 M3 had 80k miles on it and it was completely bulletproof. Towards the end of my ownership it was throwing the error "EDC malfunction" which is the adjustable suspension was no longer functioning. I never found out what it was, but google says it was just a cheap sensor.

how many miles are on it and how many when you bought it?
11k copped it out of a lease and it got 53k on it right now
Wow nice.  What year is it?

What are your thoughts on the interior?  As nice as you expected?  anything cheap feeling inside?

I dont know your financial situation but thats silly what your paying lol

How is that silly? If I may ask.

yoo 788 is OD unless u copped a 60k+ car or somethin  then again i doubt yall would put down 5k on a 60k+ car :nerd:

aint tryna count anybodies pocket tho so dont mind me

Lol its cool and the car was almost 60. I make a nice decent amount of money. lol

Paying 800 a month for 6 years... Damn...

Its for 5 years.

its a 2011 the LCI the interior depends really bmws have very clean simple interiors so if you dont mind that you'll be fine
as for like leather and stuff just depends on what options u get i guess and quality is nice nothing feels cheap maybe the radio&ac buttons but thats about it

The interiors are understated but very well built. IMO it was a major upgrade from the quality of E36/E46 interiors. My only complaint with interior is leatherette seats (unless optioned with real leather) can feel a little cheap. However they are very scratch and wear resistant. Not a single crack or tear is in my seats yet. If you cop one without iDrive it will feel a little like an older car with many buttons and a somewhat analog console. But IMO its a good thing because I have heard iDrive can be a PITA to use on earlier models.

The car you traded has negative equity?

How much do you pull in a year?

Yeah I had a CLA and i owed 37 on it they took it for 33500 which wasnt too bad. I had already put 20k miles on it so I was actually happy they gave me that much lol And I pull in a bit over 90k a year. I could make more but im lazy lol.

you in Oakland? Join the IBEW. not sure what they pay out in Oakland but in San Jose a Journeyman electrician is making 54 something an hour.

were going to go test drive it sometime soon. hopefully this weekend. that 38mpg looks WONDERFUL too and yea i dont see many mazdas around. i only wish they had like a dark blue exterior with the peanut butter/clay brown interior combo.

Unless you drive highways constantly 38 mpg is difficult to get. With most highway driving I've done (about 30-45 minutes) and little street driving, the best I've done is almost 31 mpg
