In regards to ref pay, I know certified idiots making $40/game doing adult rec leagues (Seattle). Two games a night, two or three nights a week. Nice little bit of extra cash for not really trying hard. I've thought about it, and I know the right people to get a job, but never pulled the trigger.
But reading the NBA-related comments by OP reminds of refs I used to work with a lot back in the day, and the politics at the upper levels of competition. I was mainly a scorer and timer for rec leagues, but I was so reliable (I know that sounds corny, but everyone who has ever played a rec league game knows how damn shady/stupid those people running the clock can be, especially if there's a rooting interest) that a lot of refs loved working games with me and would tell me stories about their experiences.
For example, there were a couple old Pac-10 refs who got let go in the mass firing of Pac-10 refs in the '90s, when the new director of officials fired every ref who wasn't from California. He then hired replacements that were all from California. At one point in the Pac-10, every referee was from the state of California. You'll never hear about this, of course. That conference is a joke.
The even bigger joke is the NBA, but more on an entertainment level. There was one ref I worked with a lot, who is definitely one of the best non-NBA refs in the country. He's turned down offers from the league many times over the years. He straight up told me he couldn't live with himself buying into the politics and the show. And he's not just blowing smoke, this guy is legit as hell. Everyone knows him. I've seen local NBA players bug him about going to the league. He just won't do it. He has a regular day job, but is an NBA-class ref on top of that.

In women's basketball when they do a shot fake up and under, on the step through they pick up their pivot foot then jump with their other foot and it is not a travel... Why?
I am coaching in D2 women's and after being in the men's college game for 4 years I notice they call things differently

THE GAMES ARE CALLED SOFTER AND TO BRING EXCITEMENT TO THE GAME THEY TEND TO LET CERTAIN THINGS GO...FOR EXAMPLE THE PLAY YOU MENTIONED.
IF YOU CAN SHOW ME A VIDEO OF PLAYS I'LL BE MORE THAN LIKELY TO ASSIST YOU IN WHAT EVER QUESTIONS YOU HAVE.

That isn't sexist at all, it's true. My goal is to get them to play more like men. That is the one that frustrates me the most because it is clearly a travel.
The other thing they don't let slide is when they catch and gather themselves to try to get the correct pivot foot, they call it a travel. (How MJ does in this video vs the Lakers)
