There are a lot of great reasons to go vegan, but keep in mind that abstaining from animal products will not, in and of itself, keep GM foods out of your diet.

We're seeing strawberries produced with genes from Arctic Char to facilitate growth in colder climates, tomatoes with flounder genes to resist frost, and scorpion genes added to rapeseed plants to render them poisonous to insects.  At this point, whether we like it or not all of us have likely ingested genetically modified food.  Even if we ignore all the unknowns associated with, say, protein transfers from plants and animals that human beings have never consumed, there are clear allergenic issues with carrots that contain proteins found in milk.  How can you leave those products unlabeled?

Earlier this year, a study linked Monstanto's GM Corn to organ failure.  Given all of the variables involved, it's beyond reckless to assume that these foods are practically indistinguishable from their natural counterparts.  If there is a problem, genetic crossover into natural populations is difficult, if not impossible, to avoid.  A simple product recall won't cut it.

Monoculture is hubris taken to the extreme.  Even if we ignore the potential health risks, reduced genetic diversity and the over-reliance on pesticides like Roundup needlessly imperil the global food supply.  For the same reason that abstemious use of antibiotics has been preached time and time again, GM crops can breed resistance to natural pest inhibitors while reduced genetic diversity can leave entire species susceptible to decimation from a single form of bacteria.

The FDA's placing short-term corporate profits ahead of public health and food security - and perhaps the most frightening aspect of all is how little people seem to care.

Good post, Meth, and unfortunate what the FDA is doing. One of my last courses in college was modern scarcity and agriculture, what a shame what's going on underneath our noses.

Y'all need to move here to NZ

All our products here have the right to proclaim they're GE-Free ((genetically engineered) what we call it in NZ), and we take pride in being 'green' hence us being a "Nuclear Free Zone" and our ban on letting American nuclear ships into our waters (that was a huge deal fyi).

Buy some land with a view of the mountains, grow your own stuff. We have a lot of GE-free food and crops here. May I also remind you that we make up 1/3 of the world's dairy industry.

Our dairy and meat exports >>> *

We're the most peaceful country in the world for the second year running too
