to a lot of people, that looks more natural.

especially with the skinny jeans of today...

it looks so forced to try to stuff a bulky shoe into the tapered pants leg, to the point where on hi-tops, they can't even get the whole shoe into the pants, just the tongue, so the sides stick out...

to add to what you said, sneakers with big tongues were designed back then to be proudly displayed..this is why they purposely stick

out with fitted clothing.
