I don't think they make shoes the same way anymore. Meaning I feel they start with the cleated version and try to translate it in to a "turf" shoe or one that could be worn on the streets. When turf shoes were at their peak, I feel they probably did things the other way around and translated a shoe like the DT's in to an on field shoe. It also helped that the endorsers actually wore the released model of the shoe back when teams had astroturf.
