Do GREAT sneakers create Hype....Or does Hype create GREAT sneakers????

You have instances where hype makes sneakers great. It could be instances recently such as a limited release or a QS release or you could have instances from back in the day. The best example to come to mind is the Jordan I's... When the NBA banned them, I can't think of any better way to hype up a sneaker leading up to a retro after that.

Then you have history made in sneakers... Whether it's Jordan hitting the "Last Shot" or Jordan playing the flu game. These moments all gave history to sneakers. The best example I can give for this is the original XI's... When the Concord's released for the 1st time, they didn't sell well in most areas. Sneaker buyers weren't sold on the patent leather. These only started to sell better when the Bulls started winning in their 70+ game season & Jordan was putting up big numbers. After the Bulls won the championship & the black/reds released, they sold QUICK. So here you have kind of a before & after. Before the success started kicking in with Jordan & the Bulls, the sneaker didn't sell very well... After (& up until today) they become one of the best selling & most hyped Jordan's.

Just some random examples... But to me, it's a combination of both.

you created this thread/question based on ONE colorway of a the Lebron 8...you bought into the hype

certain colorways coupled with "limited availability" create hype

you can't consider a shoe great if you're only checking for one colorway.

Foamposites for example... (a generic example now days) Foams have been
around since release date.... They did well but poorly in some places.
But keep in mind... They released and released in a diff form to
decrease the price but then retro'd in 02.... Foams are dope....

Which leads to my "conclusion".... When the youngins see the old heads
wanting and proclaiming that foams are dope/ill/tight/etc... They
follow. Theyre being led to believe these are dope and great.... So it's
gonna grasp more attention to the rest.... So it gets the true fans
more interested and worried so they "hype" it up and that leads to more
hypebeasts.....

for the most part this is true. But from my experience until 2009 Foams weren't available in my area even then one store got 10 pairs of the Eggplants. Same still goes for a lot of non JB shoes.

See I dont argree with that.....I ALMOST bought into the hype (Im not gonna lie I was THIIISSS CLOSE to jumping in the car for the midnight release)....Then I kinda caught myself...Now Understand...Im a 33 year old whose been in the life since 94....I have a love (some say addiction) to ATF (So whack that I just typed that)....Im not an SB, Jordan, Lebron, Nike anything head...I have about as diverse a collection as you will EVER find....My collection is to the point that I dont HAVE to buy the HOT "IT" sneaker..or the one that everyone is beasting over...I find certain qualities about a sneaker that for one reason or another attracts me to them....Example...I just cop'd those Loon SB's cause I loved the embrodery on the sides of the sneakers...I think it was such an awesome touch that they did not HAVE to do...but FOR ME it was enough to seal the deal....Another example...I cop'd those Reebok Pump Haze joints cause the suede and color way was exceptional...But in terms of the Lebron's...I love the colorway...Not because its loud or anything like that..but because the use of Teal and sutle pink...IMO..just compliment each other soooo welll.....Then it prompted this thought in my head...Im a feel it.. touch it... wear it.. kinda guy and I haven't EVEN seen these in person...tried them on...nothing...but Im willing to stand in the cold for a few hours just for the POSSIBILITY of getting my pair....That just seemed crazy to me.....How many people camp...then have the opportunity to cop...and then decide (after trying them on) this is really not for me?????? Is it HYPE that conveninces you as your in that store that these are really DOPE???? Or were they ALWAYS dope...you just had to see them in person???? (Hence the question)

I have to agree with dude who was talking about the Lunars....Its a sneaker that I would never give a second look to...Im not even really sure why....I grabbed a pair at the outlet after reading Franks review from the Chi Marathon...saw and tried them on...and now they are my FAVORITE gym sneaker...SUPER Comfortable....Now is there any hype behind them?? I would say no...they are VERY much available....But its a great sneaker that people talk VERY highly about....creating a buzz...which can ultimately create hype...

Another example...I just grabbed a pair of Zoom Dons...Yo...one of the most lightweight and comforable performence sneakers Nike made in the last year...They bricked harder then a chick who caught her husband cheating when they went to retail....But due to those circumstance I cop'd for $19.99 at the outlet....Honestly I love these things....When people ask I HIGHLY recommond them....HYPE didnt make me do it...but its a great sneaker that I can put a buzz in peoples ear about....

Last example....The first Spizike....first off...Spizike (how ever you spell that @**@) are a horrible frankenstein sneaker...Not comfortable...Differently not a performence sneaker...barely a fashion sneaker..yet...they sold out like crazy alll along 95 when they released....If you can find an authentic pair...in DS condition they command an above retail price...even to this day.....When ever I see this horrible Jamacian looking things..Im like YO are people blind...these *$%$! are horrible...But....Most of the county did not get access to them...so Hype and limited quanties make them hunted by all the beast....

Last note...Yeezy's for $200....ABSOLUTELY...My man...Have you seen some of the garbarge that Nike puts out for $160-$200...I mean I guess I understand cause these days who the hell pays retail anymore so most of the time we dont realize what retail is...But Griffey's are $160...and the materials and quality that was used to create those isnt even CLOSE to what was used for Yeezys....Now I think the dudes that ran out and gave LV and Kanye $10000000000g's are just stupid...@**@...Reebok even some Supra's have materials that are on par with those "High Quality" kicks...

Just my opinion

It's good marketing. Without hype, shoes will be sitting in outlets. Think about all the different style of colors and the clever names that comes out for each shoes. Just look at the Kobe V's. I personally do not find the shoes comfortable which is why I didn't invest my money in it. BUT, I almost bought the inks because they look sick. Sometimes, the hype takes out what the shoes is really for. People would purchase the shoes because other people like it, and they're not doing it for themselves. I defiantly debated till this morning if I should go get the Lebrons. Before I left, I realized I was almost caught into the hype of these limited colorway shoes. I almost bought the shoes because of it's rare and limited that plaster all over the shoes. So, to me, it's just really good marketing on behave of Nike. Only they could come out with these crazy colors and be sold out like. My hats is off to them for sure!

I got into sneakers because I wanted to wear the latest thing on court, just to see if they do anything different than the shoes that came before. The companies that made the newer shoe would advertise, suggesting that what they were doing, was actually better than what everyone else was doing. After checking the advertisments, I'd bite, purchasing the shoe just to check out the claims. What the companies did was to hype that new product, gaining the consumers attention. So hype does sell shoes, but hype does not create great sneakers.

If a shoe does not do what it is supposed to do, at least in the functional sense as stated by the claims, it will not be considered a great shoe by people who use the shoes for their intended purposes. But by those who do not use the shoes for which they are intended, as with much of those who are a part of Nike Talk, a shoe can become great on looks alone.
nike-foamposite-one-black-02.jpg
...when these were initially released, they were supposed to be that new thing from Nike that would revolutionize hoops shoes, but they didn't. They are some of the most non functional hoops shoes ever made. They are clunky, suffer from poor traction, inflexible, poor ventilation, out of balance, and then do not form to the foot while also featuring poor heel fit, everything you do not want in a supposed high end basketball shoe.

They failed, but gained notoriety due to being a beautiful shoe, thus now being considered a great shoe.

It's subjective, as it's all an opinion in regard to what a great shoe should actually be. But for my money, a great shoe doesn't need any hype surrounding it, because it actually works.

if great sneakers is quality then nike fall short majority of times
adidas & reeboks are better quality imo
nike is more from a style standpoint when it come to greatness

Tons of people love to ball in foams. Just because they don't work for you doesn't mean they don't work period.

In my opinion, I think the statement is reciprocal. I agree on both terms of the statement. I've fallen victim into buying HYPED (i.e. limited, special materials, collaborations, quality, etc) shoes numerous times from 03-08. As, I grew older and wiser through the years, my spending habits with sneakers has definitely changed. Back then, if I bought, a so called, "limited", sneaker, I remotely thought it was a GREAT shoe, which was utterly naive. Why? Because of the presumed exclusivity, history, materials used, quality, etc. Now, that I've owned 100+ of sneakers, sold the more than half of them and, currently, own less than 40 pairs, I just buy what looks good to ME and what I TRULY like (I know, I know NT cliché)

To put the shoe on the other foot, GREAT sneakers can also create HYPE. Speaking for myself, I think Lunars are GREAT shoes because they can account for most, if not all, the factors I previously mentioned. I've been running in Lunar tech for more than two years now, and I've started running more than four years ago. They've helped me perform, train and race in my first marathon several months ago, when I finished in the Top 8.5%. But I digress. Since I was so amazed by the Lunar series, I posted a thread in the Sneaker Showcase forum. I knew not that many people would post in it since the Lunar tech is considerably new and the majority of NT wear their shoes casually, but that thread has grown pretty quickly. From the "reviews" from that thread, some NTers can attest that Lunars are great shoes. Moreover, the vast majority of Lunars are general releases and are of low cost. The quick growth  of the Lunar thread can confirm that GREAT sneakers can create HYPE as well. All in all, I think the statement is reciprocal, very subjective and depends on the specific consumer.

That is the same reason I started in the "90's buying shoes. Any time a new Maestro, Swift, Huarache, etc., came out I had to get it so I could destroy people on the court. I always pictured myself in those commercials, blowing by people, to see if the shoe hype was justified. Now, older and wiser, I know to look at the supposed technology and see if the claims even seems possible. Saved me alot of money.

The one shoe off the top of my head that was hyped beyond belief and absolutely blew is the Hyperflight. So many colors, nice design, and EVERYONE had a pair in some color, but once you played in the, they were terrible and died a quick, deserving death.

For the life of me I never will understand why Nike doesnt cash in on hype and make the more anticipated releases more readily available. All you are doing is making resellers rich. Why not make Yeezys, space jams and cool greys a GR?

And if you say ohh I wont want these shoes anymore cause everyone will have the same pair, I gotta question if you actually like them in the first place or just like the "exclusive" tittle.

^^^ The problem with Nike and its distrubution channels is QS...limited releases are the only way to control the amount of product that hits the shelves....Case in point...The Retro Infrared 90's....awesome shoe!!!!! I have Og's....HOA...and now the retro.....Over the past three years they have released three times...(actually 4 if I count those Buffalo leather joints)...Each time they dropped (with the exception of this drop) they were a QS or scavenger hunt release....The line at Michael K's was around the block with the STORE selling them for $200....$200...thats bananas...and you know what...they SOLD out everywhere....Now you have the retros which are a GR release...you can get these EVERYWHERE...Footlocker..Footaction....Champs..@%*!*..Modells...%%%% Macys even has them....AND THEY ARE SITTING THERE....Making my rounds today and I saw them for as little as $49.99.....You know what...they will hit the outlets...and be marked down to $29.99....Nikes distrubution channels for non limited releases is EXTREMELY widespread its why they charge a premium for the upper tier accounts...There has to be a seperation between a company that only picks up a few things and a company that picks up EVERYTHING regardless of if it will sell or not...I would LOVE to see Yeezy's be a mass release..%%%% I would love to see Jordans more widely disturbuted...but it will never happen...Cause the true reality is that sneakerheads (hate that word) make up a very small portion of the sneaker buying public...and with that being said..your average consumer will never pay a premium if they are produced in MASS...its a market saturation theory that can only lead to price cuts to move the product..then its all about Who will discount it more...The second issue is the larger consumer base would never pay $200 for a pair of sneakers that glow in the dark...I dont care who designed them....Now I people are like Papi your bugging..cats would be salivating over these if they were GR's...yea MAYBE in major markets like NYC, LA, MIA, but in ButtNuts, Kansas...Yeeyz's aint movin...AT ALL...and there are ALOT of Nike distrubution channels outside of the major cities...So why mass produce a product that only a small minority REALLY want??? Trust...them Damn Lebron SB are SITTING in a couple MidWest Footactions RIGHT NOW!!!! Where the hell you think those restocks from FTL, FA, and EastBay come from???

@Nat...I think you make good points..but I think that the points that you are making are more performence based as opposed to where Im kinda directing the question..I guess the way I should have addressed the question is WHY do you buy what you buy (thats soo general though)..I think if you buy from a performence stand point then yes..its impossible for Hype to create a great sneaker because regardless of how many people are talking about something...it still has to perform...And I agree with you 1000% Foams are like Bricks on your feet...yea they look cool...but thats kinda about it...Basketball, running, training, working out, I've tried everything in Foams and at the end of each session my feet were barking....
