I'm white and honestly no one is worthy of playing Martin Luther King Jr., I've seen the Malcolm X flick and not even Denzel was worthy of playing such an influential figure. This is coming from someone that has read Malcolm X's autobiography and I honestly think he was the most forward thinking individual in modern times.

why ruin something so powerful with Hollywood slop? We are taught about MLK in our younger years
we'd end up with some director casting 50 Cent as MLK trying to do something he thinks will be great and make money only to have complete trash on the screen

This Would be one of the hardest parts for the general population to accept. I would love to see a realistic view of MLK, side-chicks and all but I don't think the general American population, especially African Americans would like to see one of our biggest heroes made to look anything less than God-like.... Because they would have to show his affair if they were to portray him objectively. And any amount of emphasis on the affair would be too much for some people. For others, if they left the affair out, people would be complaining that it's unrealistic.
Personally, I was very upset about the Gandhi movie. The first time I watched it, I liked it a lot. But at the time, I had no idea that he was a racist. Later, when I learned about his racist comments and saw that not a word about this has been mentioned in the movie, I couldn't take the movie seriously.

Hollywood slop? Malcolm X's movie wasnt a hollywood slop. Oliver Stones movie about the JFK death wasnt slop. As long as they dont do it for the money its all good.
