I'll steer you in the right direction...
The most important thing you want to consider in your motherboard, power supply, expandable memory and processor. I built my PC 3 years ago and it's still a MONSTER, with minor upgrades to memory and power.
"Micro Center" if you don't have one nearby then cop online, you may find cheaper parts on Amazon, I've copped parts for 2 cents before.
Your shell is important too, you want one that's gonna be able to upgrade with your motherboard.
If you're a gamer or do video or graphic design then you're gonna need a premium graphics card, Raedeon is pretty cool.
If you're into BIG hard drives you'll want a board with copper conductors... GIgabyte makes reliable boards with huge expandable memory and SATA ports.
There isn't one site you can go to, PC's are tailored to your needs, so you kind of have to feel it out, trial and error. It's a fun journey.

Fix'd.
Radeon cards are top dog right now especially after the newest drivers were released. Add to the fact they are not all voltage locked like nvidia cards. This coming from someone who has used nvidia mostly in my pc history. They are also cheaper. I do expect nvidia to respond with new drivers pretty soon though. They have to.
I saw that someone recommending a 800D as a case. If you're not going to watercool, dont bother with it. Air flow is not so good in that case. Look at a Switch 810 or Storm Trooper/Stryker.

Yeah, Radeon has better prices then Nvidia at the moment. You can't go wrong with either though.

Thanks guys. I know this is probably a dumb question, but is upgrading my current Dell Inspiron setup possible, as far as the motherboard, processor, graphics card goes, It's not slow by any means but I know it can be a lot better. My windows index is like a 3.4. Other than a graphics card where would I look to upgrade if I were going to do some gaming. I have 3.00 GB memory and a Pentium Dual-Core CPI E5300 @ 2.60GHz processor

best thing you can do is for general improvement is to get an ssd. Makes a world of difference.
however I wouldn't waste any money on that current system if you plan on gaming. save up for a new build & name throw in a ssd.

you could increase the memory from 3g to 6 (memory is cheap ~$30-60)? I am guessing your machine could handle that, you can quickly check this by searching your inspiron model and looking for a max memory.
also if you are running windows, select a basic display mode...it helps in some cases.

Really itching to reformat my rig soon. Some software install messed up my files.
Not sure if I'll take the plunge with Windows 8 right away. I'd say I'll give it a while before I do so.NVIDIA's a @#$ for voltage-locking GPUs. I'm only biased towards them since I've had unfortunately terrible experience with ATi and their drivers.
ATi/AMD definitely offers more value for money, though.Yeah, if you're looking for a good tower, the NZXT Switch 810 is hard to beat. Lots of room for watercooling in that case, but I don't like the fact that it has a lot of plastic. The CM Storm Trooper/Stryker is definitely a good choice as well. The handle is a big plus, if you go to LANs, or move your rig around a lot. Can't go wrong with either, to be honest. Look into the NZXT Phantom as well. It comes in two sizes and is much more affordable than the aforementioned two. Simply put, you have to be certain which direction you would want your build to go in, and just purchase what case you need to move forward in that direction. A little headroom can definitely be appreciated in planning. Heck, I thought I was happy with a Cooler Master Elite 430 (a small mid-tower), but I got rid of that in less than a year and got a Cooler Master Cosmos II (which is larger). Definitely much easier tinkering with the rig and hiding all those wires.

I really just wanted to upgrade the performance and do some light gaming, nothing really more than fifa, pes and some 2K. I really didnt want to have to build a computer from the ground up but I might start saving if thats wats gonna give me the best performance.

CPU finally came in.
got that thang installed in about 20 mins since I was a little rusty.
cleaning the thermal paste off the heatsink and old cpu was really what took the longest.
going from a 2.2 ghz single core to a 2.4 dual core made a world of difference.
next upgrades for me are to buy an ssd and 1gb more ram.

its a socket 939 AMD motherboard. You really can't get much better than that without spending a lot of money which would be pointless.
I spent $26.00 on ebay (free shipping) for an opteron 180 upgrading from an AMD 3700+.
still can play css on high so im good for now.

HDD: Western Digital or Seagate
GET A BOOT SSD and Install BF3 on it. At least 128GB... preferrably 256GB. Load times are much more bearable. You will thank me.
Processor: i5 3570K should last you a long while.
Case: Good choice on the 650D
Silverstone makes good cases as well.PSU: Output depends on how many components you plan on hooking up to the rig. At least 750W should be enough for an SLI/Crossfire setup. The new Platinum rated ones are awesome. Corsair AX or Seasonic. I use a Seasonic P-1000 (1000W) if that helps.
Really tempted to do a fresh install on my rig. Might as well upgrade to Windows 8, as the System Builder edition's only $99 on Amazon. Would save more time than having to reinstall Win 7 and then upgrade to Win 8 when something goes wrong. Any ideas on how long the introductory price offer lasts? I'm keen on purchasing one after this month's credit card cut-off date, so I don't have to pay for it until December.
Looking to cop a new USB 3.0 External drive to backup my files before the fresh install, too.
