NT, What Beer Do You Drink?

I paid $12.99 for my Waldo's.

So, I noticed when I drink really hoppy beer, I get headaches. Been googling and people say it could be due to a hop allergy. Say it ain't so :smh:

Damn, I just paid $15 for Waldo's.

Drinking it now. Reminds me of Grapefruit Sculpin but at a higher ABV (11.5%).

Lucked out and grabbed the last 6 packs from my local liquor store.

-Mosiac Promise was worth a one six pack try. Really quite light and dry all around. Sessionable for days. High six pack cost though
-HH, at about two months old surprised me. That hop oil is really making a lasting impression on the aroma. A bit light and dry with a bit of a biscuit malt flavor. I really like this above SNPA and Torpedo
-Canteen Exodus. Pretty much an old school pine sort of hop flavor, with a twist. Catching quite a bit of citrus flavor. This could make a run for top IPA in my state (it's won state IPA challenges before too)
-Marble DIPA. Cheaper end of the spectrum at $7/bomber. Same sort of flavors as canteen. Yet canteen was also $7 for the whole sixer. So it makes Marble look overpriced. It's worth one try but ultimately forgettable
-SNPA. I found this to be quite sweet. Basically a mix between a blonde ale and a red ale. Hoppy notes didnt see to be there in the slightest. Sessionable for sure
-Waldos. High end booze aroma I get mostly out of this. Sort of the same flavor I always get out of Lag IPAs. Citrus flavors for days. Really good but probably forgettable.

All worth at least one try. No duds

I heard of some adding a splash of OJ or pineapple juice to IPAs, why not milk to stouts? I may want to try some heavy cream in a stout. DAMN!

So third day having a SNPA. First day picking up some hoppy notes. It's also the first time having it as my first beer. It's pretty much why I won't review beers on BA. Those seem to be set in stone. My taste buds are changing daily. Pretty much each beer I have had on its own as the first of the day were the best they have tasted. Pretty much downhill for my taste buds after that.

Pretty excited. We're brewing up two new styles on Friday.

-Scottish Wee Heavy (we didnt go cheap this time and we're using the actual Scottish Ale yeast). ABV is looking 8% or more.
-Modern Times Fortunate Island Pale Wheat Ale clone. About half wheat, half base grain. Heavy on the Citra and Amarillo hops. Looking at about 5 times as many hops as we usually use. Should have some photos in about 2 weeks.

Big day tomorrow. Father Nelson, a big Nelson Sauvin DIPA releases tomorrow. I got one trade going on BA. If anyone else wants in, speak now or forever hold your peace.

How long does a brown/amber ale brew take? I think I recall you previously making a fat tire clone.

I'm surprised to hear your buds are always changing for some reason. I figured it settled after a while.

Can anyone recommend a quintessential red ale?

Most 4-7% ales can be done fermenting within a week. Some people like to move the beer from one vessel to another, to clear up (or get the beer off the yeast cake), which may take upwards of 2 months (most sit on a 5-14 day cycle).

Us personally, we'll brew on a weekend, then by that following weekend, we'll move to another vessel for another week, at which point we'll dry hop it and keg hop it, throw it on some gas, and drink it by about day 17. Many breweries have 12 day cycles on their IPAs. They say for a lot of beers, the yeast is basically done, and its' beer by about day 5. All the rest is superstition in some sense. "yeast has to clean up. or stuff has to fall out". There are many methods to the madness. We've done batches in as little time as 10 days. Not exactly ideal but they turned out good.
----------
Reds: There are two camps here really. There are many out there that they call Hoppy Reds. Pretty much red IPAs. Then you have the ones closer to Fat Tire Amber.

I would look to the following.. Nugget Nectar, Fat Heads Imperial Red Ale. I like one called Jamaica Red ale by Mad River. I look to these lists alot when looking for new stuff http://www.beeradvocate.com/lists/style/128/
--------
They call IPAs palate wreckers for a reason. I think after just one or two, the small details of many beers are lost. Then depending on allergies on your nose, and what you ate before, I will have the same six pack of beer over the course of a week, and I get about three different tasting sessions out of it.

Waldo's was one of them. I had that one last after about 4 other IPA/APAs and it just felt way boozy wwithout the hops. I had it very first drink of the evening yesterday and the citrus flavors really came out.

Single sessions are cool I guess. But anymore I need at least two to get a good gauge to see if its something I like

Sipping on some KBS tonight. Getting this weird metallic like taste. Very off-putting. Anyone else get that?

No metallic for me.. I heard BCBS may be having some issues. I have two bottles left. I better give one a go shortly.

Ill give KBS another shot too.. .For science sake.

ruined my day >:

With all of the beer-mixing going on, I tried to follow suit last night and mixed Bourbon County with Sand City Southdown (a breakfast stout).

Lesson learned: don't mess with Bourbon County.  It's perfect as is.

Just got home from spending a long weekend visiting friends in Brooklyn. Way too much good beer for a 5 day period. They just returned from a trip to Vermont so lots of Heady and Sip of Sunshine (still one of my all time favorite beers). We were able to get a couple 4-packs of Grimm's Tesseract which was delicious and I was able to bring a few back with me as well. Also hit up Other Half Saturday night. Must say, extremely impressed with their ability to work with hops. Just looking at my Untappd- we had stacks on stacks, Waimea, ! and In Absentia Luci. Finished the night with some Jai Alia and Two Hearted (still no TX distribution). Another friend had just retuned to Brooklyn from Belgium so we had some Cantillon Kriek as well. Also had lots of Maine Beer Co. (Lunch and Another One). We also hit up Blind Tiger in Manhattan and had Finback's Buddy System and Jack's Abbey Hoponius Union on Cask which I've never had outside of Massachusetts. I'm born and raised in Mass so I love my New England breweries. All in all great trip. Typing this as I sip on a Pirate Bomb for my 32nd birthday.
