Just realized some of the sculpin cans were near causalities. This one was dented in about 1/2 inch near the bottom. Were they like this pre shipping neosole?

You may find this useful neosole. I find Sculpin a bit like Marble IPA, or vice versa. Sculpin winning out by a decent margin. Same sort of hops and bitterness without much tropical fruit making a voice. I feel Sculpin is way smoother, drinkable, and has a small fruit sweetness in the aftertaste. But just as I compare sculpin to marble ipa, I compared marble IPA to torpedo which doesn't quite make sense to me.. Maybe they are all hybrids of each other?

I will say if Marble IPA and Elevated IPA had a kid, Sculpin would be it. Then again, on any given day you can grab 5-10 IPAs at a beer store that will hold up to many others, so comparisons may be mute.

I thank neosole for making me buy a four pack. Well worth it. It hits all the notes I like out of a hefe. Nice sweetness. Quite yeasty. Carbonation is great. Almost on par with weihenstephaner hefe. I call it closer to Sierra Nevada kellerweis. Definitely one of the better hefes I've had. It kind of comes closer to allagash white. Same sort of taste and mouthfeel. I don't have to go Maine or through Cali then back to nm to have a decent sweet style beer. This hits the spot.

To clarify bruery has normal hours today. They close early at 8 Saturday for a power outage. Black Tuesday is amazing.

No true difference. I felt this last time around Sculpin had quite a hop bite. But that could be due to freshness etc. or my own palette.. The overall taste was essentially the same though.

I'm having quite a unique experience with Pliny the elder. Just as I say some of the higher rated DIPAs tend to be muted with hop taste. This guy is a near hop bomb.. Could the 4/16/14 date have something to do with that? Back a month or two, I had some pretty fresh PtE as well. It was smooth, somewhat basic, and easy to drink.. This time around the beer has character... I've made it a point to lay low on IPAs this past week since Monday. I don't think my palette has changed too much. First five sips was nothing but piney/citrus hops just wrecking my tongue. As it's warmed up a touch, I catch some malt in there, but there's quite a sense of tongue wrenching IBUs. It relates to elevated in some ways here (for the first time I see the comparison). Elevated has that dryness and some mango sweetness that is just killer. I'm not catching too many flavors with PtE just yet. I love the stuff but think I'm done seeking it out (especially at that price. I can get a 4 pack of elevated and stay local). The smoothness of a 8% beer and no off flavors does yield it to be quite a highly rated beer.. 100 and one of the best worldwide? I just can't see it. Then again, someone has to be tops.

A sixer of Sculpin should cost you $12 + tax. Time to find a new bottle shop.

Located in Central PA...about 3 hours northwest of Philly

I usually by from the grocery store acrossed the street...this bottle shop has some stuff that nobody else in the area carries...voodoo, bruery, alesmith

Funny you mention that. I had my last bottle a few days ago (5/30) and it definitely had more of a hop bite or palette wrecking taste to it. I'm attributing it to it being 2 weeks old. The bottle I had on 4/22 was super smooth and well balanced, which is what Pliny normally tastes like. The bottle I had on 4/26 had a slight bite but still smooth and enjoyable.

I cracked open a can of Elevated today and it had this weird oniony taste. I didn't get this the last time I had Elevated about a month ago. Maybe it was a bad can? Have you experienced this before Wally? I'm hoping the rest of the cans are better. Also got some piney, grassy, dank oils and pineapple notes. Hop were definitely present but not overpowering. The malts balances the hops really well here. I just can't get past that oniony taste. I will be trying the Father Nelson this weekend so I'll have a comparison up soon.

I went with allagash tonight instead of a Pliny. I gotta get on those ASAP. Times a ticking.

I finally put to use a Stella Chalice glass I've had for awhile. Perfect replica of the allagash chalice.. I gotta say, it's been about a year since I first tried this beer. I would have to revisit notes on it. So this was sort of a fresh intro.. Huge amounts of a fruity yeast smell. It carries somewhat into the taste. Carbonation is perfect. Flavor wise, you just gotta get used to that yeast characteristic. I dont know If I like this style better or a hefeweizen, which to be is nearly identical with a hint of banana.. No banana here. Very easy drinking... I have three more to decide if it was worth it lol. It's quite tangy and tart. It reminds me of the Weihenstephaner hefes and vitus beers. Even local wits and hefes comes sorta close.. This is one style that is hard to distinguish the great from the okay.. Experience kind of reminds me of a Hoegaarden as well.

For now, definitely in the 93 BA score range. I'd untappd it at a 4-4.5... It's above GOOD among a staple of other GOOD beers that taste similar.. None seem to blow me away too too much.. Availability for me definitely plays into the score. Local stuff can come somewhat close, so this may not be one to seek out too far for.. .A revisit is coming soon

I must be spoiled living in Portland... This is my go to on-the-go beer at work...

PtE was definitely smooth and crisp but that bite was a surprise.

I had some Marble IPA last night. Definitely tasting just right for its style. Let me know if anything else tastes off or weird.

RE: elevated
Yes I've occasionally found a straggler in the bunch. Sometimes too malt forward. Sometimes cloudy. Sometimes undercarbonated. Sometimes a lack of hop aroma, and even too much "onion". Onion is a trait of the Nelson Sauvin hops. If and once you try Father Nelson, and elevateds odd flavors are above even that, I think sometimes really wrong. It should have some bite but not too oniony. WIth what you're used to out of elevated from the last time, father nelson should have a bigger "onion" like bite. But it should'nt be overpowering. I would be tempted to try another elevated ASAP. I sent two diff. canning dates for instances like this.

I would say out of maybe 300 cans that I've probably had a dozen or so that have tasted 'off' in some way.. Was it completely undrinkable? Please get to trying the other three and get back to me.

I tend to follow BA and untappd for review scores. It tends to give me a decent idea of what out of towners think of 2-3 week old cans. It's a delayed response which is great because its exactly what we have here. I feel the latest elevated all through April was tasting superb. Review scores were up a notch with a few lows.

Hype is a funny thing with beer. Father Nelson is sold out everywhere. No real info on a re release. But it seems like people now don't want Project Dank. My side by side blind tasting proved both to be very very close. People would rather have a father nelson or NOTHING at all it seems like. Hype was all over Project Dank for awhile as it sold out. People do tend to move on to the next biggest and baddest thing, with no company affiliation tied into it at all. That's a scary thought for a company looking to grow.

For the weekend, i got more project dank, and 4/21 elevated. In the name of science once again, I will crack some open and pay attention to any onion like qualities.

newmoanyuh, I recommend this to anyone getting into beers at ANY age. Go to a brewery and order up a sampler flight. Some let you choose 10, some give you 5. Some give you everything you offer. With hundreds of styles, no style is alike. What do you consider "bad" tasting?

I must admit, I have had some woodchuck hard cider. It was in a darn 12 pack "beers of the world" gift set. Not bad. It's nearly a smirnoff flavored drink. It's nothing but carbonation and tons of sweetness. Every time in a beer store, I see a female picking up angry orchard or woodchuck.

CelticsPride34, I went up and did some brewery tours of our own a couple years back in and around NH and ME. We hit up Gritty MCduffs, seadog, Shipyard, Run of the Mill in Saco, a place in Kennebunkport. Surpringsly no Allagash (maybe they were closed at the time). I love Allagash White. Having been away from it for a year, I realized, some other local options come sorta close.. Now if I could buy it everyday locally, hell yeah. Go to beer of the summer for sure.

thumb master double ipa by old orange brewing. a very good ipa. i tasted a lot of hops, tropical notes and some citrusy notes, tasted grapefruit and as i keep drinking, a bit of caramel and spice. they're kinda new i believe, i think opened in 2011? and for around 5 bucks for 22oz, worth it.

I've been drinking Sierra Nevada's summer fest and firestone walkers 805 blonde these past few days. It's perfect for these hot California days and clippers, kings and ducks playoff games.
