NT, What Beer Do You Drink?

Rumble Oak Aged IPA: Very good. It was different from any IPAs i've had. Aromas had the oak/vanilla notes to it, kinda sweet, and then you get some pine of the hops. Taste is similar, you get the oak first though then you start tasting the hops and citrus. It lasts very long on the palette.

Victory Golden Monkey: It was alright for me. Aroma had this sweet, floral smell with spices. Taste has a lot of spices. Not too big on the earthy, spicy flavors though so I felt like this was just alright.

what a jam packed two days these were.

Friday I went through the three lagunitas IPAs, as well as a Stone Ruinten.

All Lagunitas beers were very well done.
If I had to rank them *including asumpin extra from the day prior

Would buy again
1. Sumpin Sumpin Extra Ale
2. Sumpin Sumpin Ale
--------------
Wouldn't buy again
3. Ruinten
4. IPA
5. IPA Maximus

I'll start with wont buys..

-I give Ruinten a great deal of credit for its ABV. It was hot and boozy, and for me, the malt sweetness was just too high and intense. At 9%, it could have worked. 10 something is crazy!

-IPA seemed very light on the palette. More of a session IPA for me. Its good but generally not what I am looking for in IPAs. Other better options available to me.

-Maximus was similar to ruinten. The malt sweetness was too much. The balance was a touch off. It felt like a heavy beer... I wouldnt rate these as being bad by any stretch. BA scores are pretty much on the money IMHO, except for ruinten. I think people rate it 4-5 pts too high because of its ABV.

As for the would buys...

-Sumpin extra is just so smooth and light on the palette. But then the ABV kicks in. Light citrus and slight tropical fruit flavors. Nothing overly bitter or extreme. Very clean and smooth. Malt sweetness is perfect imho. Doesnt taste heavy at all.

-Sumpin Sumpin is on that same level. As a pale wheat, it has a touch less of hops, abv, and has a wheat character. It makes for an even lighter crisper beer. But still in that 7% range.. Impressed by those two for sure.. BA scores back that up a bit with a 93 and 94. The complexity is raised a bit with those two.

The dont buys seemed to be one dimensional. Either too boozy, too malty, or too plain.

Consensus: Everyday since getting sumpin sumpin extra ale, I have had at least one. It could easily be in my rotation if elevated wasnt in the way lol.

Yesterday was fun. I spotted some Ten fidy which happened to be canned almost 10 months ago at a local grocery store. Price point seems to really keep people away. I think its been at least 3-6 months since I have had one.

Yesterday was a mix of everything I have had before.. Started with some project dank, then a sumpin extra, then onto some dales pale ales, and then a family member shows up with a growler of fresh elevated IPA.. I had plans to go with some stouts. But the night ended rather soon it felt like lol.

Today.. I had plans yesterday to drink my last BCBCS on my birthday. Ive been saving it for about 7 months for this purpose.. I will likely go at it tonight, along with some malpais stout, and ten fidy.. I guess I'll make it a stout kind of night.

Cheers

I think my ABV limit is definitely around 13.4%.. Thats where BCBCS sits.. I opened my last bottle up earlier. I went through almost 14 in a three month span then took a break for awhile *traded all but one of the remaining.... WOW. What a shocking revisit on this stuff.. Smell is still potent, if not for a small loss of coffee. But its still all bourbon, chocolate, and wood smells/flavors. Carbonation was as lively as the first time I had it. It shot out of my bottle almost too fast. :smh: Lacing and body retention is nearly zero. But in your mouth, the body seems just right. Crisp and not too heavy. Truly impressive stuff. Definitely not meant to be aged if you intend to have some sort of coffee presence. Its there but in the deep backbone of the flavor palette. The bright coffee smell has subsided. I want to say the bright burst of bourbon flavors has subsided as well.. Almost like it has balanced out by losing that intense aroma/flavor all around.. It may be for the better for some people. Im still iffy on aging it

^ I still have the bottle I received from you awhile back. I'll probably crack it open sometime this week.

Last night had both the 6/16 and 6/29 of Elevated. Drank the 6/16 first and found that it had a slight bite compared to the 6/29. Both fantastic. I thought these had more of a tropical fruit taste compared to the previous batches Wally sent me. I enjoyed it more than this recent batch of Pliny. Awesome stuff! Glad I have 8 cans left

Sipping on these today. Ponto session IPA from Pizza Port and Modus Hoperandi from Ska Brewing. Really enjoyed the Ponto. Got some dankness in the aroma and some citrus notes. Nice hop bitterness in the taste, especially for a SIPA. I liked this better than Stone's Go To. Modus Hoperandi was decent. Had a nice aroma of grapefruits and tropical notes. Taste followed the aroma with some sweetness from the caramel malts. Probably won't be buying this one again.

If any of you live in Boulevard's distro footprint, stop reading this and go find yourselves some Two Jokers Imperial Wit aka The Best Witbier Ever Made Ever.

It's been about 3 years since it was last made, and it just reappeared last week.

It's tart, citrus-y, spicy, refreshing and just plain delicious. Go, go, go!

neosole89, I just read SKA made its way into CA? That's a tough market.. I barely touch that stuff. I realize its more of a western/midwest distribution and we should feel "lucky" to try new stuff. But sadly, I just dont often reach for their beers.. They have a steel toe stout that slightly rivals Left hands milk stout imho... I didnt realize Modus Hoperandi had a 92 BA score..... I'm slightly intrigued.. I've had their blonde ale (ba 77) which is slightly above average home brew.. Their mole chile stout was okay.

It kind of makes you think that anyone can be a brewer when mediocre products see double digit growth

Baseballer10p, nice looking homebrew

Here's a shot of some very very fresh centennial blonde I was taking about a month back

It's unfiltered. It's unfined. It's been just 13 days on a slow forced carbonation @ 14 psi. It's tasting quite good. I'll get another photo in a weeks time.. By then, it should be even clearer. We started at 1.060 and finished a bit high at 1.020. So the sweet bite is there. I'm tasting a bit of a sweet pilsner like bite with a toasted malt character. Hops are sorta there. Abv undetectable. Very solid stuff. I sorta sense some honey or something else sweet. But we never added anything else.. Maybe the yeast aided on some sweet character?

Our Ipa is a bit of a struggle. It finished way high at 1.030 so the sweetness factor is all over the place. We've had drain pours before and this isn't one of them. Considering how we lost a wort chiller and our AC was struggling through some hotter moments of the summer, it's not a total disgrace. I've only had it at room temp, barely carbonated and it had a sweetness to it. The bitterness kind of sneaks up on you. The aroma is lacking big time. But it should carbonate nicely by our big weekend on the 20th.

Thanks! Yeast could be doing it, but could be alcohol sweetness as well. But at the FG, it could just be residual sweetness from the malt. Too bad about the IPA - very strange how it finished so high with the heat. Yeast work faster up there - if it didn't get hot enough to kill them (which seems to me to be pretty hard to do). Do you guys do all-grain, extract, or partial mash? Because it could be because of the wort as well.

My pseudoSue clone. Fantastic, juicy, maybe a touch too bitter to be just like Sue. Can drink it all day.

That sue clone looks real nice, mind sharing the recipe? Made a gandhi-bot clone the other day, need to keg it soon and see how it came out.

Taste the ghandi-bot yet?

Here's the recipe for the pseudoSue clone (I'm going back to extract to get my technique down, but I hear they use Golden Promise as their base malt):

5 gallon batch

Wyeast 1272
6.75 lb light dry extract
1 lb crystal 20 (steep at 150°F for 30 minutes)

1.00 oz citra (boil 15 min)
1.00 oz citra (boil 10 min)
1.00 oz citra (boil 5 min)
1.00 oz citra (add at flameout)
1.00 oz citra (hopstand/whirlpool/steep 25 min - SEE MY NOTE)
1.00 oz citra (hopstand/whirlpool/steep 15 min - SEE MY NOTE)
2.00 oz citra (dry hop for 7 days)
2.00 oz citra (dry hop for 4 days - add 3 days after first dry hop)

Cool and pitch. Ferment at 67°F.

NOTE: Do not do what I did for the whirlpool. You want to turn off the heat and let it get down to 175°F or so. Then you add the hops and whirlpool it.

I took the pot and put it right in the cold water bath so it dropped to 120°F in five minutes. Then I was worried about contamination when adding the hops so I ended up reboiling which probably resulted in the too bitter taste.

Getting jelly over here.  Came down with strep throat over the weekend.  Looks like no drinking for me for at least a week or so.

I've never been a taco shop that had craft beer on tap. I need to know the name of this place.
The taco shop is called "Garaje" it's a couple blocks from the AT&T ballpark

Holy crap. Checked the place on Yelp. Gonna have to go there next time I travel up north to go to a game.

Alcohol kills bacteria though.....?

SN's Beer Camp West Coast Double IPA

Picked this up at Costco for something like $4. Not bad for a 24oz bottle at 8.5% ABV.

Took a big whiff: smelled like coors light? Tastes like beer. I'm already don with the bottle.

^ I paid $4.99 and felt it to be kinda ehh... The hype level on the brewery names attached to the beer camp brand, some 13 months after being introduced, is just a huge hurdle to overcome.... I feel it wasn't worth the hassle.. Sales of said 12 packs may prove otherwise.

Neosole89, weird situation with elevated IPA today. I have some 6/22 cans I've been drinking. I had one out of the can into a glass, and it was as you described, very tropical fruit like.. Just a true treat to have.. I had another just an hour later straight out of the can, and I felt more bitterness and bite.. I know seriving style has some effect on the beer. But this felt 180 degrees different from just an hour different.. Maybe this analysis portion of our drinking habits needs to change lol

Yea man. This offering was just generic. SN doesn't have anything MIND-BLOWING but are always super solid with just about everything. I felt this lagged behind their general releases.

Costco also had a 24 pack of the beer camp series for $38 but I passed.

We drinking session IPAs out of teku glasses now? Fancy bastard

No discrimination here

Yeah, my local bottleshop just got some in so I figured I'll give it a try considering it received a decent BA score. I've never had any of their other offerings but thought this more of a 87-88 beer. It kind of reminds me of Surly's Furious but not as good.

Pinkys up my man!

You already know!

I picked up that BC bomber today. On sale at my local grocery store for $4 so I said what the heck.

I know what you mean man. The first can was where I got the bitterness then got to the second and it tasted like a dessert. Maybe my taste buds were jacked from the first can haha

Sipping on this tonight. Aroma of coffee, roasted malts and chocolate. Got tons of chocolate in the taste with some coffee notes in the backend. Such a treat! Gotta get me some more of this stuff.
