I like Russell and I liked him when he was a Yankee. I had a no problem with NY letting him go because I thought Pitt overpaid him.

I understand the importance of a C and I think he's a good C. His bat and his injuries, bring down that contract dramatically.
 
We're gonna have to agree to disagree and reevaluate this discussion at the end of the year.

Lester back in Boston would be interesting if true.

The Boston Red Sox reportedly have an agreement on a five-year, $90 million deal with Hanley Ramirez and a $100 million deal in place with Pablo Sandoval. But what does that say about Boston’s pursuit of a free agent starting pitcher, particularly Jon Lester?

“The team is still very much involved in trying to bring lefthanded starter Jon Lester back,” writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. “Lester is meeting with other teams and will then go back for another round of talks to seek final offers. The Sox first offer was in the $110 million-$120 million range, but it appears they would go higher.”

We know the Red Sox have plenty of cash, but going for the trifecta of Ramirez, Sandoval, and a pitcher like Lester in a single offseason comes at a high cost. “The Red Sox have roughly $50 million under the luxury tax threshold with which to sign players in 2015, but making commitments of around $300 million to just three players would seem to put the Sox right back where they were in 2012, when they traded Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett to the Dodgers,” cautions Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com.

Now that the Giants are losing Sandoval, there is some buzz, including a report from ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, that San Francisco will shift some of its resources to pursuing Lester.

The Atlanta Braves met with Lester on Thursday, though it wasn’t clear whether progress was made on a deal, reports David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Chicago Cubs have been mentioned as a leading candidate for Lester and clearly have the resources to make the highest bid.

If the Texas Rangers are serious about dealing for Atlanta Braves outfielder Justin Upton, the price will be steep.

With the Rangers planning on moving left fielder Shin-Soo Choo to right field, they need another corner outfielder with power and have inquired about Upton, reports Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com. Watkins adds the Rangers would also be interested in acquiring a pitcher from the Braves in a deal.

According to a New York Post story on Friday, the Braves are open to dealing Upton but are seeking a huge haul in return. Joel Sherman wrote, in fact, that the Braves are requesting a higher return than they received in exchange for Jason Heyward -- Shelby Miller and pitching prospect Tyrell Jenkins.

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports reported last week the Rangers are willing to trade their top-end prospects with the exception of Joey Gallo and Jorge Alfaro.

SF offered Pablo 5/95 with room to go up and he took Boston? Anyone else hear that? It doesn't make sense.

Regarding the Lester situation, i'm surprised more guys dont re-sign with teams that have dealt them away. assuming there is no bad blood between the two parties.

he said the fans were a major part of the reason he wanted to play in Boston. i'm sure getting Hanley helped, along with promises of bringing in pitching

1. nah didn't mean it like that. at least i didn't read it like that. more so he loves what he's heard/knows of fans in boston. could be wrong though
2. more so the promise of coming to a team that's going to load up to go after a chip

i think SF's initial offer for an extension last season may have turned him off as well. 3 years @ $40M? something like that, right?

That was the offer in spring training, but that's standard negotiating to start low and build the talks up from there. He didn't help his cause by ******** the bed the first half of the year.

That doesn't make a lot of sense when SF has pretty good fans and he's a fan favorite. At least he got his rings, I wonder who he's traded to in 2-3 years when this team continues to suck.

I remember when Juan Uribe left the Giants for the dodgers it was mentioned that the Dodgers offered the same offer as the Giants, and he picked LA
