I should have kept my mouth shut

Well it's a very good example of why it should be, proves wasn't the right word. RBI's are an extremely meaningless stat. It doesn't prove anything about a player. Neither does batting average for that matter.

I actually agree with you about RBI and how it's pretty meaningless...it can tell you a little but about how "productive" a player is I guess but even then you kind of get put into situations and luck and other players around you play a role in that...BA has value but it also needs other numbers to have context and can't be the only thing you look at, a guy with a 300 avg hitting singles around the field can have a hollow avg if they don't walk or get many xbh...ERA for pitchers is also a flawed stat too

Reading is fundamental. He said get rid of RBIs and you cited his average with runners on base. See the flaw?
I read it. Am I mistaken or if Justin Upton had come through more times with runners on not only would his average be higher, but he'd probably have driven in more runs right? Maybe I just don't get it though

Mike napoli has 25 RBIs, Justin Upton has 14.

Justin Upton is 60 points better in OBP and is slugging 200 points better. RBIs are misleading, aren't they?

is there something you see in BJ upton that leads you to believe that, or is that what you're hoping happens?

As a Braves fan, I'm giving him a first year pass this season

On a serious note, what I noticed is he's trying to live up to that contract already. He's over swinging and chasing bad balls. With Justin on a tear, I'm pretty sure BJ is going extra hard to match that. Once he calms down and settles in with the NL pitching, I think he will do some damage in that lineup. That may not happen until June-July though.

doing a little independent research, here's what i've found.

bj upton swings at less pitches out of the zone than the major league average, and swings at more pitches in the zone than the major league average.

the major league average for contact on pitches thrown out of the zone is 65%. BJ Upton's percentage of contact on pitches out of the zone is 57%.
the major league average for contact on pitches thrown inside the zone is 86.4%. BJ Upton's respective percentage is 78.

lastly, he has a greater % of swinging strikes than the ML average.

obviously it's early, but those numbers don't sit too well. maybe the problem is his swing

I agree with all the info you provided above. Is that for his career or just his first 19 games this season?

My expectations of BJ aren't that high. Upgrade over Bourn? too early to tell. As mentioned he's average and we definitely overpaid him but we missed out on a few big name bats over the years. since we lost Teixeira, our front office refused to spend big money on a bat. In order to land BJ we had to pay a premium so I see why that happened. If the Justin Upton trade came first , BJ would've came at a MUCH cheaper price IMO

The stats I posted were for this season so far, small sample size I know. He's an average to below average player for his career. Coco crisp is better than he is

People are still using OBP and Slugging % as a way of evaluating players?

Are we in 1965?

The Braves are playing at Rockies and is 23 degrees for game 1 and All Braves pitchers were in jerseys only no long sleeves. Ouch. Game 2 should be even colder they still have snow on field.

Gattis has monster power like Giancarlo. Bj sucks so far he strikes out too much , Heyward can't hit anything just a slump, Uggla continues torrid start always hits 200

Glad that Avilan came back he's automatic add is Eric O our pen is great.

Wait huh? do you mean still using batting avg. and RBI to evaluate people? Cuz OBP came about in 1984...and both of those are better gauges than batting avg.

que?

Bj and Justin back to back homers. Great moment.

Braves hit 5 HRs today Rockies have 4 all season at Coors

Every game that goes by I can't beleive more and more that the Angels basically just gave us Jean Segura. We were gonna lose Greinke anyway. The Angels lost Greinke anyway and gave us a star in the making.
