Baseball isnt set up for 1 game sudden death
Reality is that baseball is perfect for a "1 game" playoff game. That's if you have an Ace.
i suppose, but i still feel like it dilutes the playoffs and a do-or-die game isnt a real representation of the sport (and yes i realize this is part of the argument for winning your division)
was 4 divisions per league (a la the NFL) ever in serious discussions? (with or without expanding to 32 teams)?
How does it dilute the playoffs? MLB wanted to expand the playoffs and at the same time weaken or put the WC teams at a disadvantage. WC teams were having too much success, with five WC winners winning the World Series from 95-2011 ('97 Marlins, '02 Angels, '03 Marlins, '04 Red Sox, '11 Cardinals).
What do you mean by "real representation"?
There was a point where MLB was seriously considering folding a couple of franchises, so no, expanding to 32 teams in order to have four division winners go at it was never an option.
It gives team an incentive to win the division, and not be content with being one of the WC teams. It bleeds into the regular season, did you not see how the NL Central played out. It was a dogfight until the end.
