True story: on the BBWAA forum a couple of years ago, a voter asked for a packet of information about the eligible players to be snail mailed to him for research purposes, because he didn't recognize all the names on the ballot. When someone simply responded with baseball-reference.com, he said it would be easier for him if it was on paper.

And that dude has a vote?

When was Schilling ever associated with PED's? He's just like Frank Thomas, he's been speaking out against it for as long as I can remember. The only controversy I recall was him saying Boston management recommended him taking them to recover from an injury in 08.

If Jack Morris could get voted in on the narrative on one goddamn post season start, Schilling should be able to dance in for possibly the greatest post season ever pitching wise.
All o' that.

Yep.

I wouldn't be shocked if many 75% of the voters are like that. It's filled with guys that haven't really covered baseball in 15-20 years.

But guys like Bill James and John Thorn can't get a vote.

Curt now saying he lost a lot of votes because he's a Republican

 at some of these voter ballots that were released. Entertainment every year.

While I do think right now there are a few outsiders who should be in, I'm fine with the hall continuing to be hard to get into. They've already let in too many fringe players.

Bloggers now are flipping the process upside down and the movement is slowly changing. Soon we are going to see 10 players a year get in, there's no doubt that's coming once the old guard voters die off.

Are there really that many fringe players being argued though, Ry?

Out of the guys who didn't get in this year I would put in:

Piazza
Bagwell
Raines
Schilling
Clemens
Bonds
Edgar
Trammell
Mussina
Kent
Walker
Sheff

I wouldn't say any of them are really fringe statistically speaking.

Whew.

I actually know of a Cubs writer that wouldn't put Sammy in no matter what. :nerd:

Made decent argument, advanced stats, etc, but if 500 is automatic, 600 is moonwalk in. I think he was just tryin to present another side.

“I think he got in because of [Greg] Maddux and [Tom] Glavine. I think the fact that they won 14 straight pennants. I think his ‘Swiss army knife versatility,’ which somebody said yesterday, I think he got a lot of accolades for that, I think he got a lot of recognition for that. He’s a Hall of Famer,” Schilling said. “And I think the other big thing is that I think he’s a Democrat and so I know that, as a Republican, that there’s some people that really don’t like that.”

So Smoltz got in cause he's a Democrat according to Schilling. Smoltz isn't even a Dem, he's a Republican. This man is just bitter. Starting to get on the **** Schilling bandwagon.

I was talking about the automatic numbers with a friend who is a big believer in them...asked him if McGriff and Delgado would be automatics if they hit 7 and 27 HR's respectively...and this guy had the nerve to say yes  there's a good amount of garbage that annoys me about the game today but this has to be #1 on the list.

Schilling has always been one of the biggest douchebags. He has a history of back tracking on literally everything he says

But, he should still be in the Hall. Personal feelings makes up about 25% of a voters mind.

So, there's old voters out there that hardly watch the game anymore and are voting based off of stats? Cool!

Cooper is rolling over in his grave.

I'll cry if Bonds doesnt get in before he dies
I have a feeling he wont, which will completely invalidate Cooperstown all together for me.....which is a shame because prior to Bonds being on the ballot, I have always considered Cooperstown to be Mecca.

I was speaking more so fringe players in the past. Not a lot, but some have already been let in. Personally I would say quite a few of those players above though are fringe to me yes (and i was a MASSIVE fan of some of those players).

I respect the process but I love insanely high standards for Halls of Fame. It's what makes it legendary.

It's really all about what your definition of the "floor" is for player inclusions. Lower-end recent HOFers like Bert Blyleven and Jim Rice are not HOFers to me and I've always sided with the argument that we should look at players on their first day of eligibility and go "Yes or No" and be done. The obvious choices rise. If we have to analyze it for 8 years, beg people to be convinced, beg even harder.....then well he's not one.

Good to see today Schilling though understands the process

 Schilling always likes to play the victim.

I'm not sure it's that he's a Republican, but that he's a World Class douchebag that a lot of people dislike.

Wholeheartedly agree with this, and have been saying this for years.  If there needs to be a debate whether or not a player is worthy of HOF status, then the player is NOT worthy.

The only exception I personally have with this rule is Andruw Jones.  I think he should be a lock to be in the Hall, but I would say the majority does not.  The debate on him, in my opinion, is more so because people are uninformed, not because there should be a legitimate debate on qualifications.

Bonds should be in in the HOF no dount.
Dude was such a POS on and off the field though, so we can just call it Karma

I've always thought Andruw was a HOF player on defense alone I think he's one of the very best Centerfielders of all time. He should have gotten the MVP award over Pujols that year still salty over that.

Man Andruw was one of the best defensive CF's ever, was a pretty good hitter for the majority of his career, but I'm not sure he'll get in. Maybe after a few tries? Seems like the way his career tailed off might be held against him. I'd vote him in though if I had voting power. Same with Larry Jones.

Met Barry a couple of times when I was kid, one of the nicest athletes I've ever met. Maybe it was cause I was a young brotha, but how do we know he was a POS off the field? Cause he was a prick to the media members that lived to tear him apart?

I've met Bryce Harper before too, and he was a chill, nice dude as well. Same with Jayson Werth and those guys get reps for being ********.

There's always more than what meets the eye and what the media says/sources leak. Then again I could just be biased cause I'm a big fan of all three players I mentioned.
